• Bumpy roads and sore butts

    August 3 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Travelling to Kenya, we assumed that meant blue skies and fairly comfortable temperatures. It does not. I'm not sure why my mother (who lived here) didn't warn me, but especially August is quite cold and sees very little sunshine. Well, now we know 🤣

Today began with a simple breakfast, where we met another (german) couple who had just finished the KBO. After taking in all their tips and advice, we started packing our bikes and got ready for a bumpy day ahead.

The first stretch was easy riding, mostly uphill but on tarmac. And despite not having done much adventure cycling the past year, we felt right back at home on the saddle.
10km in, we stopped at "the Brackenhurst," a rather fancy looking retreat, for what might very well be our last fancy meal for a while.

After this, the real KBO began, and with that, we turned onto a dusty field track. For the majority of what followed, we cycled past lush green tea fields, through small villages, and on bumpy backroad tracks. The german couple had warned us that the first days feel like your insides are being re-arranged by all the bumps you hit. But while it wasn't the easiest riding, and butts definitely got sore, it was pretty much what we expected. 😅

On top of that, we even spotted our first wildlife 🐒 and had countless encounters with groups of kids, greeting us with big smiles and chants of "Muzungu" (white man/forener).

Tonight, we're staying at the Bamboo Gardens, which sound fancier than what they are, but do the job. As it started raining when we arrived, we opted for a small hut for the night. 🛖 But tomorrow, it's finally time for the tent again.

And with that, Lala Salama! 🛌😴
