Oakland to LA on the Coast Starlight

    September 21, 2013 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

In 1999, when I first arrived to live in the US, I took the Coast Starlight from LA up to Oakland--this trip was in the reverse direction. It's a beautiful trip along the coast, with several stops long enough to get out and stretch your legs.

I stayed overnight in a comfortable, homey hotel not far from Union Station, and on my evening walkabout come across a nearby alley with some great little eating places, one of them with a name I recognized from a song we used to sing in primary school.

  • LAX to Anaheim

    September 22, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The purpose of the trip was to meet with my niece and her son, who had flown in from New Zealand. Then we'd go to all the tourist traps in Southern California. First port of call was Anaheim to visit Disneyland.

In the evening, we went to a hotel near the travel apartments we were staying in that allowed visitors up on its roof to watch the nightly fireworks shows over the theme park.

  • Disneyland Day 1

    September 23, 2013 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

I have never in my life wanted to go to Disneyland, but once I got there, I had a lot of fun.

First day was pretty low-key, but the Young Master got to build a radio-controlled car in the Ride Maker store.Read more

  • Disneyland cont.

    September 24, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We spent five days in Anaheim, visiting Disneyland and the Disney California Adventure Park several times. But the real highlight was the jousting tournament we went to elsewhere in Anaheim.

  • Legoland

    September 27, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We took a coach shuttle down to the Legoland Hotel in Carlsbad and had two days there in our pirate-themed room. The aquarium at Legoland was wonderful, but I guess all the Lego sculptures were pretty good, too! We had a watery battle on a pirate ship, and the pool at the hotel was fantastic.

One evening, we took a stroll to a nearby music museum and street concert.

  • San Diego

    September 29, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

A shuttle took us down to San Diego, where we stayed near Mission Beach. SeaWorld was the main object of this stop, but the beach was probably the most enjoyable part of our short stay.

  • Koreatown, Los Angeles

    October 2, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We took the Surfliner up to LA from San Diego, and it was a very pretty coast-hugging trip (just didn't take any photos of it!)

I had rented an AirBnB here, but it turned out to be awful. Mainly because LA was experiencing a migraine-inducing heatwave and the apartment didn't have air conditioning, nor was there a pool in the complex, but we could see one at the back of the one next door. Torture!

Main port of call was Universal Studios, but we also took the Metro to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the nearby little museum, and went on the worst bus tour ever of Hollywood, with a driver who seemed out of it on drugs, talked absolute BS about what we were seeing, and didn't go to several of the places promised on the brochure, such as the Hollywood sign.

  • Goodbye to LA (1)

    October 5, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We didn't do much of anything on the last day at the apartment, just went out for a stroll and some lunch.

It had been a very whirlwind trip, especially the last part, and the heatwave didn't help. Pretty sure my guests were glad to see the last of LA!Read more

  • Oakland

    October 6, 2013 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I stayed one more night at the AIrBnB, then took the Coast Starlight from Union Station back to Oakland. Beautiful rail trip, once again!
