Local exploration with Elvira

On June 1st, I bought my first sailboat ⛵️: Elvira, a W 30 Kompromiss, built in Piteå in the early 80s, one of the last made by this dockyard.
She's currently in a small boat club south of Stockholm and I'll explore around before going up North. Read more

    Rigging Elvira

    With help from her previous owner, the first thing was to rig her up and take her for a quick spin.

    I'd never seen a boat lifted on a crane bed with my own eyes before. I was quite stressed out until she settled calmly on the water.

    Avec l'aide de son propriétaire précédent, nous avons mis Elvira à l'eau, installé le mat et les voiles, puis some parti faire un essai dans la baie.

    C'était la première fois que je voyais un bateau suspendu en l'air, tenu juste par deux solides bandes passées sous la coque. J'avais beau savoir que tout irait bien et que cette opération avait été faite plein de fois, j'étais très soulager quand Elvira était dans l'eau.    Read more

    Moving in the boat

    Once the sale was settled, it was time to move into my boat. A step that included getting a guitar first 😅, moving all I had in my hotel room into the boat plus buying some essentials like life vests, some maps, a toolbox, and some food. In the end it took me 2 or 3 back and forth, but all went well.

    Une fois la vente finalisée, j'ai commencé à déménager dans le bateau. En premier lieu, j'ai acheté une guitare d'occasion, puis déplacé tout ce que j'avais dans l'hôtel, plus des gilets de sauvetage, cartes, boîte à outils, de la nourriture… Il m'a fallu deux ou trois aller-retour pour tout mettre en place.     First sailing tour

    From the harbour to Fifång and back.

    The original plan was to moor in the natural harbour and overnight there. But after an unsuccessful attempt at using the stern anchor and putting a line on shore…, I thought it wiser to give up on that plan and to double back instead.

    Musical evening

    Some evenings are for sailing, some are for music practice. I travel with my harmonicas in a box I made last winter, my new second-hand Fender, a battery-powered amplifier to go with the harmonica mic.

    So far I have not got any complaints from my dock neighbours 🤣

    Certains soirs sont propices à faire de la voile, d'autres à faire de la musique. Je voyage avec mes harmonicas (dans leur boîte que j'ai fait cet hiver), ma Fender d'occasion et un petit ampli à piles pour aller avec le micro pour harmonica.

    Pour l'instant, je n'ai pas eu de retour négatif de mes voisins (mais, ils ne sont pas juste à côté non plus) 😂    Read more

    Round Fifång and back (again...)

    Once again, the plan was to get out, cruise to Fifång, and re-try mooring in a natural harbour. Once again, things didn't go as planned.

    After starting rather late but with barely enough wind to get steerage under sails, the wind suddenly picked up and headed me from the moment I left the second inlet after leaving Grödinge båtklubb until the moment I rounded Fifång.

    When I arrived in view of the first inlet in Fifång, I noticed the presence of too many boats to attempt to moor there with any kind of confidence and low pressure. So instead, I pushed forward to the south side of Fifång. However, with the growing sea and the fatigue starting to sip in, I thought it's better to simply round the island, put the wind in my back and head back towards the marina. I thought I might find a suitable place for mooring on the way, but every suitable inlet was busy, so I simply glided back to Grödinge båtklubb and took back my mooring on the bridge around 10pm.

    Une fois de plus, je voulais sortir, aller jusqu'à Fifång, retenter de mouiller dans un port naturel. Et une fois de plus, je n'ai pas suivi le plan.

    Après avoir démarré assez tard et avec à peine assez de vent pour pouvoir manœuvrer à la voile. Mais le vent s'est levé d'un coup et droit dans ma face dès le moment où j'ai pu passer la 2ᵉ anse après avoir quitté le Grödinge Båtklubb jusqu'au moment où j'ai contourné Fifång.

    Quand je suis arrivé en vue de la 1ʳᵉ baie à Fifång, j'ai remarqué qu'il y avait beaucoup trop de bateaux pour essayer de m'y mettre aussi sans pression. Du coup, j'ai continué mon chemin vers le côté sud de Fifång. Mais entre la mer qui se faisait plus importante et la fatigue qui commençait à se faire sentir, j'ai préféré contourner l'ile, mettre le vent ¾ arrière et retourner vers la marina. Je me suis aussi dit qu'il y aurait peut-être un endroit convenable pour m'arrêter en route, mais toutes les places que je pouvais voir avaient déjà du monde. Du coup, j'ai juste continué de glisser tranquillement vers Grödinge Båtklubb et repris ma place au ponton vers 22 h.    Read more

    First Neighbor complaint... (against me)

    As I was going to fetch something on the boat, I heard a hissing sound as if I was next to an angry cat… To my surprise, I was a couple of Swans and their kids, and the hissing sand was coming from the 2 grown-ups. I stepped back and let them move away before going to the boat. The same thing happened on the way back…

    Aujourd'hui, alors que j'allais récupérer quelque chose sur le bateau, j'ai entendu une sorte de sifflement (un peu comme u chat en colère) et je suis tombé nez-à-nez avec une famille de cygnes. Le bruit venait des deux parents qui n'avaient pas l'air très commodes... j'ai attendu sans bouger que la petite famille s'éloigne avant de poursuivre mon chemin. Mais rebelote au retour !     Despite the initial gusty wind, I went to a small place nearby to try out anchoring with the bow anchor and get a bit more familiar with the manoeuvre. While I waited to see if the anchor was dragging or holding, I could observe at leisure a flock of herons and other birds. Once I was decently sure of the anchoring, I went for a small swim around Elvira.

    Malgré un vent de face en rafales, j'ai décidé de faire une sortie dans la soirée pour aller tester mon ancre et me familiariser avec la manœuvre. Pendant que j'attendais de voir si l'ancre tenait en place ou non, je pouvais observer tranquillement un groupe de hérons et autres oiseaux.     Foul weather, leakage & bricolage

    The weather hasn't been really suitable for sailing of late, so instead I've spent my free time playing with guitar and harps and lately doing a bit of repair…
    Yesterday, the evening brought in a deafening downpour that highlighted a leakage on the front windows…
    I quickly made a slide for the leak, so it would not pour onto the beds and me. And today I got some silicone joint from my neighbours, waited for a dry patch, opened the window, cleaned up the old joint and put a new one.
    And 🎉, now I can just wait for a big rain to test them… 😅 (Anxiously)

    La météo n'a pas été très propice à naviguer… Un mélange de bourrasques, de vents qui sautent d'un quadrant à l'autre sans indications… Du coup, je me suis rabattu sur l'harmonica, la guitare et plus récemment des réparations…
    Hier soir, une averse particulièrement forte a fait fuiter les fenêtres avant de mon carré…
    Sur le coup, j'ai bricolé au plus vite un toboggan pour les fuites et préserver les banquettes et mon lit. Aujourd'hui, j'ai reçu du joint silicone d'un de mes voisins et j'ai attendu un moment sans pluie, dévissé les fenêtres, enlever le vieux joint, appliquer le nouveau, et tout remis en place 🎉.
    Maintenant, j'ai plus qu'à attendre (anxieusement) la prochaine grosse pluie pour tester les nouveaux joints… 😅    Read more
