    The 2nd largest synagogue in the world

    The Great Synagogue of Budapest is the second-largest in the world, after the one in New York, which was actually built having as a model Budapest’s synagogue.

    It serves as the place of worship for the city's Reform Jews (the more modern and progressive branch of Judaism). Partially destroyed in 1939 by Hungary’s Nazi party, it was later seized and turned into the headquarters of the Nazi military radio.

    Inside, some of the Jews who were murdered are buried—an exceptional case, as Jewish tradition typically forbids burials within synagogues.

    Behind the synagogue stands a memorial in the shape of a weeping willow, commemorating the 400,000 Jews who were killed and the Righteous Among the Nations who saved thousands—among them several Italians and the famous Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz.

    In one of the nearby fences, there is a very small statue depicting a man with a beard and a bicycle: this is Theodor Herzl, the Hungarian-Jewish founder of the Zionist movement.    Read more

    The Bronze Statues of Budapest

    Budapest is filled with bronze statues that tell the city's history, culture, and legends.

    Some of the most iconic ones includes:
    - The Little Princess (1st pic) representin the daughter of the sculptor.
    - The statue of Imre Nagy (3rd pic), prime minister during the Hungarian revolution and executed by the Soviet. He is considered a national hero, and the statue, which looks at the Parliament, is a symbol of resistance and indipendence.
    - The Fat Policeman, whole fat belly has been polished by the thousands and thousands of hands who touch it for good luck.    Read more

    The Parliament: The most famous monument

    The Hungarian Parliament is the most iconic building in Budapest and one of the most stunning parliamentary buildings in the world. Located along the Danube, it impresses with its neo-Gothic architecture, majestic dome, and intricate details.

    The flags of the Parliament have a hole in the center, commemorating the 1956 Revolution against Soviet Union, and in front of the building there is a plaque honoring the event and its victims.

    Truly a majestic and imposing building, especially when it is illuminated at night.    Read more

    🍽️ The most famous dish: Goulash.

    Goulash, together with Kürtös, is the most famous Hungarian dish. Invented in Hungary, it became very popular in other cuisines such as German, Austrian, Slovak, and even Northern Italian.

    It is a flavorful stew, typically made with beef, onions, paprika, and other vegetables like potatoes and carrots. It is also seasoned using different spices.

    We tried it in various places, and in each restaurant the consistency (liquid or more dense) and flavor vary significantly.

    The one we liked the most was the one prepared by Pipa Etterem, a place that serves local dishes and that is decorated with tablecloths and plates featuring traditional motifs.    Read more

    The parties never ends in Budapest!

    The city, especially on weekends, is very lively and full of students, locals, and tourists crowding the streets of Pest and the Jewish Quarter.

    On Saturday night, we went to Instant Fogas a club with multiple rooms, each playing different music genres. Here too, the walls are covered with writings and stickers from all over the world, like in the other ruin bar.Read more

    🍽️ An after-party gyros to recharge🪫

    After a night of dancing, walking, or drinking, many tourists and locals stop at various the Greek food stalls present in the main streets of the center to have a gyros and regain energy. The many shops of Melissa chain are probably the most famous.

    The vendor at the one we stopped at was Albanian, very friendly, and capable of speaking basic Italian.

    🛀 A bit of relax: the thermal baths!

    Budapest is known for its historic thermal baths, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and tradition. The most popular are the Széchenyi Thermal Bath and the Gellért Thermal Bath.

    We went to the first one, which is also the largest thermal center in Europe and is located in the City Park. The daily ticket costs around 33 euros.
    It was completed just before WWI in 1913 in a neobaroque style.

    In addition to a big outdoor hot water natural pool, there are various indoor rooms with cold and hot water pools, saunas, and Turkish baths.    Read more

    🍽️ The famous chimney cake (or kurtos)

    The kurtos, also known as chimney cake, is a traditional Hungarian pastry made from a sweet circular dough. The dough is then coated with sugar, and baked over an open flame until golden and caramelized.
    The result is a very fragrant, crispy and sugary crust with cinnamon or other flavour on top.

    There are different shops selling it and many and many food trucks at the busiest intersections and prices can vary significantly in the different shops (I paid it the equivalent of 2.50 euros).

    🍽️ Csülök: the slow cooked pork knuckle

    The Hungarian pork knuckle (Csülök) is a slow-cooked pork knuckle that becomes tender and juicy, often served with sauerkraut, roasted potatoes, or mashed potatoes.

    It can be prepared in various ways, and it is absolutely delicious and made tender through long cooking.

    We tried it in both during the Medieval dinner and in a small local restaurant called Firkász where the dish was amazing.    Read more

    ☕ The most beautiful café in the world

    The New York Café is considered the most beautiful café in the world due to its stunning Baroque-style interior and luxurious decorations.

    It’s like taking a leap back into the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Belle Époque, surrounded by live music, stuccoes, mirrors, golden decorations, and opulent frescoes.

    It is crazy expensive (13 euros for a cappuccino, but money well spent) and during the week the queue in very very long. We could not enter on Sunday and we could only enter on monday early morning before leaving the city.

    It is located at the ground floor of the Anantara New York Palace Hotel, a five-star hotel in the center of Budapest.    Read more
