On the way back to Austin, we stop in Gruene… a German town in the middle of Texas 🇩🇪🤠
The town is named after the family that founded it, who, like most Americans (including Trump!), had German roots.

In New Orleans, it felt like being in France. Here, it feels like being in a rural village in Switzerland Germany.Lue lisää

We enter a house converted into a hotel to use the bathroom and grab a drink.
At the entrance, the sign reads "Haus", on the bathroom door it says "Badezimmer"!

The Texas State Capitol

The Texas Capitol was inaugurated in 1888 and features a Neo-Renaissance style.
Its dome reaches 90 meters high, making it even taller than the United States Capitol (the national Senate).

Inside, under the dome, there’s a mosaic floor featuring the symbol of the USA, along with references to the Republic of Texas, and to Mexico, Spain, and France.

On opposite sides of the dome are the two chambers: the Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives 🏛️ The building is truly majestic and imposing.

We could take pictures in only one of the two chambers, as in the other one there was parliamentary work ongoing and it was not allowed to take photos (even if we could enter and attend the parliamentary works). The period when we went was very delicate, as the redistricting was being discussed, which created great tensions between Republicans and DemocratsLue lisää

Outside the Texas Capitol Hill

Outside Texas Capitol, there’s a statue dedicated to Texans who answered their country’s call and served the nation after September 11, 2001 🗽

On the exterior wall, the First Amendment of the Texas Constitution is engraved: “Power belongs to the people, and the government is founded on the authority of the people”.

Inside, you can see how seriously this amendment is taken. Within the building, you might find a weard Trump supporter with MAGA signs, and shortly after, a Trump opponent fearing a fascist drift.Lue lisää

During the trip, we tried every type of fast food: Wendy’s, In-N-Out, Popeyes, Whataburger… but among them, my favorite is Peter Terry.
It surpasses all the others in quality and taste, of course considering it’s fast food and not a gourmet burger place.

A journey through the Johnson Presidency

Johnson’s presidency began tragically with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Johnson was his Vice President and was sworn in as President on the plane carrying JFK’s body, next to JFK’s wife, who was wearing the same outfit she had on at the time of the assassination.

Johnson was a very important President. He played a crucial role in the civil rights movement, was a strong supporter of the Vietnam War, and brought the US closer to Israel during the Six-Day War.

All these events are covered in the museum, which is full of artifacts, newspapers, videos, and audio recordings.Lue lisää

At the end of the tour, there’s a scale replica of the Oval Office, furnished just as President LBJ had it.

We had some free time, and given the rain, we decided to take a drive to see the main companies headquartered in Austin.
Among them, Oracle and all of Elon Musk's companies.

We managed to see from afar the enormous Tesla Gigafactory ... over 920,000 square meters of factory. Nearby is the headquarters of The Boring Company, another of Musk's ventures aiming to build tunnels for ultra-high-speed trains 🚇Lue lisää

It’s interesting how what we consider Mexican in Europe is actually Tex-Mex, a cuisine born from the fusion of Mexican and American cooking style.

I’ve never slept so much and so well on a plane. I fell asleep just minutes after takeoff and woke up only upon landing, roused by the wheels hitting the runway.
