Very tall bloke in the window seat decided he'd try his luck for an aisle seat elsewhere on the plane (successfully it turned out) which gave us the row to ourselves - bewdy! 6.5 hours Abu Dhabi to Munich, slept most of and wolfed a lamb curry. Eyes are sandpaper, quite like to be there now pls.

We land in about an hour then train to Vienna - actually three trains as we need to transfer twice, once in Munich and once in Salzburg. I broke that gently to Rich just now and he's thrilled. Choo choo! ✌️En savoir plus

14 hour flight down

This ridiculous beer was the price we happily paid to snag a booth next to a screen showing the football. We'll stake this out until our connecting flight to Munich, for which I saved Home Alone, to get into the Christmas spirit. ✌️En savoir plus

Walked out of Munich airport to a Christmas market which made the time I'd carved out before the train wonderful! Many doggos.

Rich is pretty tickled by that photo of me with the currywurst. I think we're both in a better mood now we've had our first meal in Vienna.

Salonplafond is the restaurant attached to a design museum, we both had a melange coffee, Rich got schnitzel with cranberries and potato salad, and I got a dense stack of wholemeal bread, avocado, bacon, a fried egg, and chilli mayo.

Spotted another dog under the table, they are very pup friendly here which is brilliant. Kick off at Generali-Arena is at 2.30 so we aren't in a rush...En savoir plus

Wien v Wolfsberg today, ended 1:1 after an early goal from our boys (Wien obviously) and we got to see Jimmy the Australian subbed in during the second half

Are you kidding me with this, honestly. Disney. This Christkindlmarkt is one of the big boys, and we walked past several little ones afterwards. Mulled wine v nice but honey wine even better. You pay a cup deposit and if you want to keep the cup you just don't return it. These were pretty cute but we got the 4 euro back. Quite tempted by the ice-skating course but process seemed to require an awful lot of steps.En savoir plus

The walk home

Via two more Christmas markets, a fancy mall area, two long thin doggos, and eventually, two electric scooters which whipped us along the final kilometre for about 4 euro, which is reasonably steep but worth it for how much fun they are - they're everywhere, spread across about five different companies, these ones were Kiwi Ride or something. Gorgeous, tasty. I'd seen Cafe Diglas in a video about cafe culture - we ordered a cliche yet delicious melange and apple strudel and sat for a while.

End of the walking tour

We went on a 2 hour afternoon walking tour of some key sights, mostly related to the various royal buildings and history of the holy Roman empire. This was where the tour finished, in the Jewish Quarter, on a sombre note.En savoir plus

Schonbrunn Palace

As we learned on the walking tour yesterday, this was the summer palace, and we had fun exploring the grounds, scrunching through the gravel admiring the disciplined hedging (Richard particularly, huge fan).

It's about 7km from where we're staying and we ended up at the Palmenhaus, still in the palace grounds, which I had triumphantly talked up as our lunch destination, only to find out nope this is a zoo, the brasserie I'd booked is in the *old* Palmenhaus, much, much, closer to town.

Palmenhaus take 2

We found the right one in the end. They had a set menu option of two courses for 16 euro so Rich got probably the tastiest tomato soup ever and pork with mushrooms and rice, and I got a kind of crumbed Raclette with endive salad and cranberries - more cheese than anyone needs, really - and more delish strudelEn savoir plus
