  • A port city and a cabin

    28. november 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

In contrast to the blinding sunshine I had streaming through my window during my flight, the first glimpse I have of Hamburg are grey and industrial. Most of the walls and fencing lining the railway are graffitied, as are the wagens on the freight trains. There is construction in progess across the city adding to the industrial feel. The bridges across the canals and river are iron; built for strength and practicality rather than aesthetics. And yet I like it and am left wanting to know more about the history of of this port city.

I'm meeting my cousin and Uncle outside of the city and need to catch another train. As I travel away from the city centre the land opens up to suburbs, then fields, farming and woodlands. It is not long before I am in Tostedt about 35km SW of Hamburg. Here I learn that the train was running late which means I've missed my connection to Sittensen, so there is a change of plans and I shall be picked up here instead.
Once we are all together we go for lunch before driving 40 minutes out to our accomodation. It is a gorgeous little cabin in the woods with a potbelly stove for heating, no WiFi and no TV. I am on holidays and forced to relax with a book, board games and conversation. It is perfect and so nice to be away from all the modern distractions.

    Christmas markets

    29. november 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Christmas markets today! I can't wait. I have been told so much about how good German markets are and the markets in Hamburg do not disappoint me. We get out of Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, cross the road and are greeted by stalls street food, some with a Christmas flavouring . There's corn on the cob, mushrooms in garlic cre`me fraiche, currywurst, flame smoked salmon, chocolat covered fruit, gingerbread biscuits... oh the list of deliciousness goes on. And then there's the drinks, glüwien, hot chocolate, and Hamburg vodka.... It is not long before we have our lips wrapped around some delicious food and we wander slowly down the crowded street toward the Rathauses (town hall) where the main market is.There's lots of little market enclaves dotted across the city, some gifts or crafts based whilst others are for take home food produce.

The market in the Rathausmarkt is a spectacular sight, each of the stall beautifully decorated with the Neo-Renaissance Rathaus standing in the background.

Amongst the stalls are lots of beautiful gifts and crafts. Felt and woollen scarves, winter wear made from animal furs, pottery, candles, Christmas baubles and wooden products, that I'm not sure I would get back into Australia when the time comes.

It was lovely to wander and soak up the atmosphere.

  • Miniatur Wunderland

    30. november 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Today it was just Uncle Justin, Laura and me going into the city. Alpin had decided that he wanted to explore the forest near the cabin. There was a short walk through the city and along the canal to the Miniatur Wunderland. Across the 10 displays there is more than 1000 trains, more than 15km of railway track, almost 10,000 cars and about 260, 000 figures. The miniature worlds have so much detail and are rather comical in places. If anyone tells me Germans don't have a sense of humour I would suggest they are mistaken. The lighting is on a timer to imitate day and night, which is a nice additionLes mer
