    Samphire Hoe

    July 12, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

The blasted regatta flu caught me the day before yesterday. Regatta flu you may ask" What is that?" well its the cold one gets the week after the week of regatta as a result of working 50 - 60 hours, coming in contact with a heap of outsiders, not eating well and having very little sleep. Essentially most of the hospitality staff will get it. However this weekend was already planned as it was going to be Matt's birthday and what we were doing was completely up to him. So after making a bag drop at the hotel we decided to take a look at a local nature reserve Samphire Hoe.

Samphire Hoe is situated at the base of Shakespeare Cliff and is a result of the spoil from the Eurotunnel when it was being constructed. To get there you have to come off the highway and onto a B road before waiting at a signal for the one way tunnel down the cliff to the reserve. At the end of the tunnel was a view of a grassy meadow speckled with summer blooms and green sea..

When we got out of the car and into the meadow we were met with butterflies and bumble bees and the loud buzz of insects and flocks of little black birds. There was glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze in from the sea. We could see France in the distance.

We didn't walk particularly far but with my cold having set in it took us a little while to do the loop. Once back at the carpark we treated ourselves to ice cream in the sunshine. It was delicious.

  • The Cliff Top Cafe

    July 13, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Even with the overcast skies the morning was splendid. Matt wanted to have his birthday breakfast at a café hidden away at the top of the cliffs. It was the type of café that most likely wouldn't be known about unless you're a local or you'd happened upon it.

We were able to sit outside overlooking the bay and back to Folkstone, quite a beautiful view. Unlike yesterday at Samphire Hoe, France was hidden in the distance by the morning haze that had not quite lifted.
