Half an inch is not 200 miles 🤔
April 17 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 66 °F
As it turns out, the wash tent did a fine job of protecting me from the storm last night. Even though I was sleeping in my riding suit and didn't even think to unlace my boots 🤣, I was out cold until the storm woke me up. A seamed section of the roof gave way presumably under the weight of the water, but it wasn't the part above me and neither me nor my stuff got wet, so I went back to sleep. When my alarm went off at 0400, it was still pouring, so I reset for 0500 and went back to sleep. My brain turned on at 0430, so I got up to find just a little bit of drizzle. It almost completely stopped while I was packing up! But just as I was about to ride off, the rain started again.
It was barely daybreak and I had only made a couple of stops before I looked at the radar again. Just a couple of blocks down the street from Freedom Road Harley was a McDonald's, so I decided to go there and let the storm move on to the West. Once I sat down with some coffee I pulled out my GPS to review my routes to see how long I could let the storm move. Turns out, I don't know how to read a map in the Northeast 🤦.
Being from Texas, it's difficult for me to adjust my internal map proportions meter. You see, on a Texas map, half an inch is about 200 miles. So, when I look at maps of other states, I think half an inch is about 200 miles. But on my maps of Connecticut and Rhode Island, the only two states I'm in today, half an inch is definitely not 200 miles.
The Rhode Island 50 Rides route I was planning to ride and considering not riding if I didn't have enough time? I thought that was about 25 miles. Nope. 6 miles. That's it 🤦. I thought I had 600 miles to ride today. Nope. Make that 250. I only had 250 miles to ride today 🤣.
I didn't wind up leaving McDonald's until after 0830 since I had so much time 🤣. But it was nice and sunny all day after that.
Even after stopping for lunch, adding several AULDR stops, and only going a little bit over the speed limit, I still got to my final stop in New London before 1400 🤣🤣🤣. With so much extra time I decided to get a hotel room so I could work on my routes. And stay out of the rain apparently.
I had a second round of great fortune with the rain today because just as I was covering the bike in the hotel parking lot, the sky opened and a deluge of epic proportions descended. Check out the videos below. Crazy. I am so happy I was not riding in that because that would have sucked big time.
But instead of being soaked, I'm now sitting in a Red Roof Inn less than 2 miles from the ferry terminal 🤣. I finished working on my routes for what I can do right now (what I'm willing to do right now), and Netflix is calling me.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️
