    Dammit, the tracker again

    3 Mart, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Well, I forgot to turn on my tracker after leaving my friend's in Oviedo 😞. I've manually plugged in some locations where I took photos. If you want to see exactly where I went, try here:https://spotwalla.com/trip/9740-22f9cba-1c31/view.

I was up this morning and packed by 0600, then went to breakfast at Kimmy D's Diner just down the road. Ooooo super good food and the best coffee I've had in quite a while! I talked to the server and a couple of gentlemen locals about my ride. Check them out when you're in Clearwater: https://maps.app.goo.gl/R9reJ6s3eUhUbkkP8

After breakfast, I came back to Barracuda HD and rolled right into the service bay. Josh and the team got me in straight away for my 55,000-mile service. It's so very nice when dealerships help travelers. I've come across a few who don't--and they're now on my never-spend-money-here list--but the vast majority do what they can, which is usually enough.

I rolled out right at 1030, ready to take on traffic for the rest of the day. Quite literally. My aux lights are not working again, so people just don't see me, even when I run my high beams. And although my horn is really loud, it's not strobing the aux lights since they're out 😞. I have to get these fixed. It's like I'm invisible, and although I haven't had as close a call as I had the other morning, there have been several times I've had to hard brake or change lanes to avoid being taken out.

Florida has over 30 HDs, and I'm hitting all of them that I can get the bike in front of. WarHorse in Ocala was really cool because they let me pull the bike inside where they take photos with folks who buy a bike from them. Yay!!

I stopped at 2000 because when I got to Crystal HD, I noticed oil under the bike 🤬😞🤢. Maybe something just didn't get tightened down enough. Whatever it is, I'm not going anywhere else, so I'm camped in the parking lot. Let's see what the puddle looks like in the morning and hopefully Crystal HD can help me out and bill Barracuda HD for it. 🤞

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • But I finally got through it

    2 Mart, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

I was up at 0400 and rolling 0430. The only way to get photos taken in Key West is before everybody's awake, and it worked out very well this morning. The only issue was that I got caught in the morning traffic leaving Key West. Most of the 120 miles is only one lane on each side of the road and the average speed limit is 45. It's horrible, but I finally got through it.

I enjoy the ride through the Everglades, usually. Unfortunately, this time most of it was under construction. But I finally got through it.

I stopped at the tiniest post office, which is one of the Harley Owners Group's 15 rides for the year. Later in the day I stopped at two lighthouses very close to one another. One of them I had to ride through sand to get a photo with the bike, which was very nerve-wracking. But I finally got through it.

When I-75 isn't a racetrack--with the right lane running faster than the left and the center lane going about 10 mph under the speed limit--it's a parking lot. Today always no exception. But I finally got through it.

I'm camped at Barracuda HD tonight and am hoping to get a 5,000-mile service done in the morning. Wish me luck 🤞.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Late start, later finish

    1 Mart, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

I was up really late last night or very early this morning depending on how you look at it. So I slept through my alarm and I didn't get going until about 1000 this morning.

I forgot how much the A1A sucks. It's bumper to bumper traffic with a thousand traffic lights that are longer than anywhere else in the States and they're all stupid...both the lights and the drivers, but I'm talking about the lights. They don't recognize when no one's there. They just change to let the invisible cars go while stopping the actual cars. And they don't time out when no cars are going through the intersection. It's really terrible and it's the whole state not just a particular area. Anyway, I got through it.

One of the worst rides is, again, on the A1A through the Keys down to Key West...during daytime. It's wonderful at night. So my timing worked out very well as I began the trek from Homestead right at 2200. Unfortunately, I was a little too late, and after almost falling asleep on the bike, I decided to stop about 50 miles before Key West.

I'm in a gravel parking lot next to my last photo stop. It's basically midnight and I've only set up my cot. It's a nice night, I don't think it's going to rain, so I'm not pulling everything else out. Time to pass out.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Saturday is a hashing day!

    28 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

No riding today because today is a hashing day!

It's wonderful to spend time with my friend! We had a blast today even though we got stuck by a train. It was maneuvering cars, so we walked around the front of it.

After the hash, just about all of us went to a Mexican restaurant nearby for food and libations. After that, a few came back to my friend's house and the night eventually devolved into Jenga the drinking version and Disney karaoke 🤣🤣🤣. It was a great time!!!

  • Babe's Blue Room. Yes, it is 🤣

    27 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Yesterday, I ate fried green tomatoes at Ben's Neighborhood Pub & Grill, but I forgot to take a photo of the bike in front of the place. So this morning, I went back 13 miles back into Savannah to get that pic, then headed south.

US-17 is a lovely drive down the coast...if you have the time to go through every little town (speed trap) and are willing to put up with the road construction. Today, I was neither, so I stuck to I-95 as much as possible.

With only three photos before Jacksonville, I made great time, so I decided to add on some stops further south of my final destination of St. Augustine. I wound up 85 miles further south🤣.

On the way, I stopped for lunch at Babe's Blue Room, and it is definitely blue. And a tiny, single room with a bar, a pool table, 4 gambling machines, 4 tables, 30 locals, and ashtrays 🤢. The food was decent...I had a grilled cheese with tomato on rye and fries...but it's still a smoking place. The bathroom smelled better than sitting at a table. But I got through it and out of it as quick as I could.

With all photos successfully collected, I was on my way north but still about 30 miles south of the St. Augustine HD when the skies opened up. There was enough rain that it even slowed down the semi trucks, which is a lot of rain.

I made it to dinner without incident, but the rain never stopped. I'm staying with my dear friend who I met 16 years ago in Okinawa. But she's in Orlando, 175 miles away from St. Augustine 😞. It was not a fun ride.

My Aerostich riding suit is not waterproof and my crotch was soaked by the time I made it to her house. But despite falling asleep on the highway...those loud divots on the shoulder snapped me back...I made it to her place in one piece. So good to see her.

Here's hoping the rain stops before I head south Sunday 🤞🤞🤞.

  • I'm Still Alive

    26 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

I came this close 🤏 to crashing this morning. It's night dark and I only have the lights the bike came with, not my auxiliary lights. I'm going about the speed limit (45 I think). I have a green light. A white sedan makes an unprotected left turn in front of me. Right in front of me. Despite having ABS, I heard my rear wheel squeel as I slammed on the brakes. Just when I thought I was going to wind up in his back seat, I jogged the bars to the left. But not enough, so I knew I would go down when his rear bumper grabbed my right saddle bag. I clenched my teeth for the impact...which never came. I was past him, upright, still slowing down, and panting. I didn't pull over because I thought I might not keep going, so I kept going, still panting. It took a while to catch my breath. It was the closest miss yet. I don't know how we didn't connect, but I'm really glad we didn't.

The rest of the day was fine...in comparison 🤣. Last night, I fell asleep really early, so I woke up really early and was on the road before 0530. I guess that's why I missed the rain that everyone was talking about at dinner tonight. Cool. Oh! And the weather finally warmed up enough that I could take off my heated gear! Yay!

I made it down to Hilton Head, an island South of Charleston but north of Savannah, to find the Harley dealership T-shirt shop was shut down. That's the fifth closed down HD I've come across this year. Disappointing. But I had a lovely piece of coconut cream pie at one of my Ride To Eat stops and delicious fried green tomatoes for a late lunch at another stop. Winning!

I debated with myself about riding down River Street in Savannah. It's cobblestones with a set of train tracks running down it. I've been down it on my other bikes, but this Road Glide is so massive and so heavy that I was pretty nervous. But considering how I began the day, I said, "F*** it, I'm doing it!" It worked out fine, and I didn't have to cross the tracks. So that got me the River Street HD T-shirt shop photo. Plus, I grabbed a shot of the Savannah harbor light that counts as one of my lighthouses. Again, winning!

All in all a good day and better one because I survived it.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Short but good

    25 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

My ride from Fayetteville NC to Columbia SC was another cold day, so I cut it short, dropped all the routing points for the recommended rally route, and beelined stop to stop. I wound up getting to Haven HD Northwest of Columbia around 1130.

After finishing a couple of adulting things that had to be done, I went to Cycle Gear. I have a headset on my helmet that Bluetooths to the motorcycle, and the microphone literally broke off a couple of days before I left on this trip. I searched a couple of the Harley dealerships for a replacement, but it's an older model that they don't sell anymore. It's Sena; they only sell Cardo now.

I wanted to get the same model so that I could use the old receiver on the new base. Since I listen to music non-stop while I'm riding, my receiver's power supply only lasts about half the day. Having a new receiver base that also fits my old receiver would give me two receivers, which theoretically should last me the whole day.

Amazingly enough, Cycle Gear had a newer version of my headset, and my old receiver fits on the new base! The great news is now I have two receivers! The horrible news is every time I switch them, I have to forget the Bluetooth connection and pair the new set. Every single time I change them. I didn't have time to mess with it tonight, but there's got to be a better way. An easier way. 🤞

We had a really great dinner at Haven HD, barbecue with all the fixings. I met a representative of Law Tigers named Jay who did a quick little video of my story, and I'm hoping he can put me in touch with some of his counterparts who perhaps can do a little sponsoring by gas cards or something like that to help ease the cost of this massive ride.

Also, one of my long distance riding buddies lives nearby--Haven is his Harley dealership--so he popped in right as we were finishing up and we got to chat a bit before they kicked us out.

I putzed around my bike until everybody left, then I set up camp and I am just about to crash. It was a good day.

  • Outer Banks and Pamlico Scenic Byway

    24 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 41 °F

I had a lovely ride today through the Outer Banks and across the Pamlico Scenic Byway. Lots of sunshine, but it was bitterly cold all day. My heated gear got a workout 🥶. And sooo windy! But it was still a great ride!!

I didn't have time to go all the way down Cape Hatteras, but I did dip into it far enough to visit the Bodie Lighthouse. The last time I rode down Cape Hatteras was during a tropical storm and the road was so flooded that I had to ride the double yellow line because that's all I could see. That was something 🤣.

Running the Pamlico Scenic Byway is an experience all its own. This is what the website says about it, which is spot on. This is a must ride if you're over on the east coast of North Carolina.

"The Pamlico Scenic Byway centers around the river and sound with the same name. Pamlico was the name of an Indian tribe who once lived in this area....

Towns with colonial history dot the route and offer stories for curious visitors. The unique architecture of old buildings is available to the watchful eye. A rural way of life along the coast and swamplands is preserved along this byway.

Scenes of waterways, rivers, and shoreline provide a variety of views. Just past the town of Scranton travelers enjoy an unusual stretch of road where drainage canals and trees on either side form a unique and protective seven-mile tunnel with views of vast fields and tree farms on either side." (https://scenicbyways.info/byway/12836.html)

After that I swung by Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to take a photo of the British Spitfire static display aircraft, then grabbed some lunch at Tacos and Wings in Mt Olive 🤤 yum. Once I hit Fayetteville I took a photo of Iron Mike in front of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum. This is another must see location if you have any interest in military history.

Around 1700, we, the just shy of 100 rally riders, met up at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson for some chili dogs, fellowship, and raffle prizes. Since the temperature was forecasted to drop down to about 35°F, I decided not to camp again and to splurge on a hotel. Hopefully, tomorrow will be warmer and I can go back to camping to save money.

Man, was it great to be out of the rain finally!!

  • Short Loop

    23 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Today was just a short loop for some AULDR photos and some adulting. Bank, UPS store, and laundry all had to be done today. Plus, I needed to make that call to Denali electronics about the auxiliary lights dimmer switch.

I got an extra 26 miles in today when I realized that although I had taken photos of my bike with two lighthouses, I had failed to add the pictures into my Spotwalla tracker correctly 🤦. So when I finished laundry, I rode the 13 miles back to Fort Story for a do-over 🤣.

Around 1600 I made it to Southside Harley-Davidson for the kickoff dinner of the Run to Daytona HOG touring rally. I got to catch up with some old friends and meet some new ones. Really nice!

Afterwards, I came back to the hotel, packed up all my stuff, and loaded the bike so I'm ready to roll in the morning. I usually ride with other people on these rallies, but I have a lot of photo stops to make tomorrow, so I'm going solo.

The forecast says the weather is going to warm up, but it's still going to be around freezing in the morning, so I'm definitely wearing the heated gear and plugging them in. Fingers crossed there's no wet on top of the cold...again.

  • Today was grody to the max

    22 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

I'm not whining, but what a terrible, horrible, frustrating, cold, wet, nasty day I had today. All day long nothing but cold, wet, stinging, drip into your visor rain. From being woken up at 2:30 by thunder and lightning that I thought was going to take me out, to a forecast of 3 inches of snow in Virginia Beach tonight, today has been not a good day.

When I got rolling, it was about 60°F and wet, and I expected a lot of road spray and, from the forecast, a little bit of drizzle here and there. The Weatherman that wrote that forecast was obviously on crack. The temperature dropped down to 39°F, which of course with the wind chill at 60 mph maybe 70 mph (we won't say any higher than that) in the rain, it was cold. And when I hit Virginia, it started raining, like, for real. (Oh, I just threw in a little '80s colloquialism. I've been listening to Sirius XM 80s on 8 for 10 hours today. You're fersure lucky you're only getting one colloquialism. Psych! Take a chill pill; it'll be fine. Totally.)

Despite the weather, I was still able to get in a few photo stops, mostly at dealerships. When I started out this morning at 0600, I still had on my lightweight boots and my lightweight gloves. It was not long before I changed to my heated gloves. And then later I put on my heated jacket so I could turn on my gloves. And then I turned on my jacket. And then I changed into my cold weather boots, which included changing my socks because they were wet. Despite wearing my Aerostich rain boot covers, my lightweight boots are Air Force combat boots, so suede and mesh tend to soak up the spray.

But again, my Aerostich riding suit kept me 100% dry today and all day. It was absolutely amazing. I've had I don't know how many sets of rain gear, some from Harley some from other places, and nothing has done as well as this suit. I also broke out my Aerostich glove covers, which only have three fingers, kind of like a mitten with a Vulcan cut. My gloves at the end of all day in the rain we're completely dry.

Because we're supposed to get 3 in of snow tonight, I have settled myself into a hotel room for the next two nights. The first thing I did was take a hot shower. The second thing I did was order Door Dash 🤣🤣🤣.

  • First wet day for the Aerostich suit

    21 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

I was up at 6:00 and rolling at 6:30. No sooner had I pulled out of the dealership, when it started to rain. And rain. And rain. I still kept stopping at all my planned photo locations, but it just seemed to take forever. When I got to one of my Ride To Eat locations, I actually ate there. I have been riding for almost 6 hours and had not even gotten 200 mi down. Very frustrating.

Despite all the rain, though, my Aerostich riding suit kept me almost completely dry. It's not waterproof, but it's extremely water resistant. After 6 hours in the rain and road spray, it had only just begun to look saturated and then only in small patches. By the end of the day it was completely dry.

I say it kept me almost completely dry because it doesn't seem to matter whether I have on a riding suit, a two-piece rain gear set, or a one piece rain coverall, they all seem to let the water in right at the crotch. Disappointing.

After lunch, I stopped for some gas. When I started the bike back up, my auxiliary lights went out again. And then they came back on. And then just the big white ones went out. Then they all went out. Then just the little yellow ones came on. Anyway, I stopped at Timm's Harley-Davidson in Anderson, SC, and they rolled it back into service to see if they could figure out what was going on. Not half an hour later they told me there was a problem with the wires going into the controller. The controller is both the power switch and a dimmer switch for both sets of lights. Apparently something is loose, melted, shorted, whatever, but it wasn't anything they could fix or even hotwire around. But at least now I know what the problem is. I'll have to work with Denali to figure out how to fix it since the controller is hardwired into the entire wiring harness.

The lights still come on and off, but it seems to be whenever they feel like it, which of course is not when I would feel like it. I had them a little bit tonight in the dark, which was awesome, but they were only on when I turned on my brights, so every time I turned off my brights for oncoming vehicles, I couldn't see the road at all. Not. At. All. A couple of times it was pretty scary and I almost came to a complete stop because I didn't know what I was going to run over. I have got to get these fixed.

I stopped at 2100 tonight, much earlier than last night, so I pulled out all of my camping stuff. And I'm just about to settle down in my sleeping bag. I'll be in Virginia Beach tomorrow, just in time for the storm 🤣.

  • Monster Day

    20 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

This will be a short one because I'm exhausted. I was up at 3:30 because the wind was shaking my tent too much. It had rained at some time during the night, but by the time I got up everything was pretty much dry.

I rolled at exactly 4:00. I only have one hard rule when I ride and that is that I do not ride between the hours of 0200 and 0400. That's my natural down cycle and I am at my slowest and weakest during these hours. So leaving today at 4:00 was perfect.

I spent all day just chasing photographs. The coolest one was the Alabama State Capitol building in Montgomery, my first of 49 Capitol buildings. I'm doing them in alphabetical order by state, so the next one is Arizona in Phoenix.

It is now 0035, and I just set up my tent right as the sprinkles were starting. Glad it only takes 2 minutes to set it all up.

  • Update: Still in Ohio...Not!

    19 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Buffalo Bob is such a great friend! Not just letting me stay at his place last night, but also picking me up and bringing me back today.

The bike is stripped down to expose the wiring and the tech is tracing lines right now. They've already ruled out any specific component causing the problem, so there must be an exposed wire somewhere. Fingers and toes crossed they find it soon 🤞🤞🤞.

I was supposed to be in San Antonio tomorrow night, but I've replanned my route to go straight from here to Virginia Beach...via Montgomery, AL 🤣. About 2,000 miles with a whole bunch of stops at Harley dealerships and for the AULDR challenge. I'm hoping to get to VA Beach by dinner time on the 22nd. If I can get out of here this evening, I should make it. Just. Wish me luck 🤞.

    Update at 2234:

They found the wire! It was under the metal plate in the bottom of the tour pack, the wire going into the power port. Wow, of all places! They spent another couple of hours adjusting all the tour pack wiring and heat shrinking it anywhere it might rub. Awesome!

I made it out of the Keg at 1700, but it took almost an hour and a half to get south of the Greater Cincinnati area because of traffic.

After riding through Louisville, Bowling Green, and downtown Nashville, I'm camped at the north end of Tennessee's Natchez Trace Parkway. I was going to ride the Trace for a while, but all I see in the tree line are the beady eyes of curious deer. Nope, y'all can have the road. I'm stopped.

It's about 70°F right now and only supposed to drop to 60, so I only set up my tent and cot. The cot is really a chaise lounge and has a small pillow attached to it. I'm pretty tired, so I know I'll sleep just fine.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • One More Day

    18 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

After a good sleep in a decent bed and a hearty breakfast, I was back at Powder Keg Harley-Davidson. The rotor came in as scheduled and by noon, the tech was just about ready to take the bike out on a test ride.

The loss of my accessories on Sunday was a blown 20 amp fuse. Oddly enough, once the fuse was replaced, the auxiliary lights began working as well. But they're not on the same line as the fuse because I've blown that fuse before and didn't lose the lights. Very strange. Oh well, they work now. They didn't do any trouble shooting with the GPS mount, but it works, too. If I do lose power to it permanently, I have my routes loaded on the bike and I have waterproof paper I can write my directions on and tape to the dash.

They finally finished up with the bike around 1600 this afternoon. I reloaded the bike and was getting my music set up before rolling out when bam! The fuse popped again. They replaced it and bam! again. And again. By 1700, it was to the point where even turning on the bike would pop it. So, I unloaded and they rolled him back in the service bay 😞.

One of my friends, Buffalo Bob, came to the rescue, picked me up, and gave me a place to crash tonight. Angel. He's taking me back around lunch tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me 🤞.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Service Day

    17 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

The cold woke me up around 0130 this morning. The temperature had dropped to 30°F, and my heated socks and tent space heater were barely keeping up. But I got back to sleep until 0500 when I unzipped the tent to find everything covered in ice 😲.

I packed up, but instead of strapping everything back on the bike, I just walked my stuff over to Powder Keg HD's service entrance. Well, I half slid, half scooted over there. The parking lot was a sheet of slick just begging for me fall. No, thank you.

Instead of moving the bike, I moved myself across the road to McDonalds and worked on my routes until 0900. Then I walked back over to the Keg (the ice had melted by now) to move the bike around to service.

I gave the picture of all the codes that the bike threw yesterday and made myself comfortable in the new waiting area. I continued to work on a new route from here to San Antonio, then I heard a familiar voice. One of the HOG chapter members was here! Frank and I chatted for a bit, then he told me the chapter meeting was tonight at the Keg! Yay!

After lunch across the street (not McDonald's), the service manager showed me my front rotor. It's really pitted and gouged, so he's going to overnight one. Since I have to spend another night, I'm getting a hotel room. I don't want to sleep in that cold again.

At 1800, I wandered back over to the Keg to check on the bike (no further updates) and say hey to my friends coming for the chapter meeting. It was really great to see so many faces again. I didn't stay for the meeting though--I keep telling them I'm leaving but I don't actually go away 🤣. I had a hot shower and called it an early night. Awesome day even without the miles.

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Problem #3

    16 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Yesterday I had two problems: a slip in the mud that was solved with my jack and the music stopped playing that was solved with a work around. The workaround kept working all day today, and I haven't had any more opportunities to play in the mud. Unfortunately, Problem #3 began this afternoon.

I stopped for gas and when I restarted the bike, my auxiliary lights no longer worked. The bike also had several codes for the BCM, ABS, and RAD. Some historic, some new. I took a picture of all of them along with the mileage so I can discuss it with Powder Keg Harley-Davidson tomorrow morning.

Man, it totally sucked not having my lights tonight. Even running my brights all the time barely shows the pavement. I got really lucky and just barely missed a skunk, a giant skunk, that may or may not have been dead, but that had just been hit. The smell was a thousand times worse than when you smell a skunk by the side of the road, so it was very fresh. It was on the left side of the lane and I just happened to be on the right, and I never saw it until I was right on it. I did swerve and dodge several massive potholes, though, so it worked out. The trucks couldn't see me as well, so I had a few close calls yet again. I have to get these fixed now.

One of my stops today was at the Aviation Heritage Park in Bowling Green, KY. I went to take a picture of an aircraft, and was absolutely floored by what I saw 😲. That aircraft turned out to be an F-4 previously stationed at Royal Air Force Lakenheath in England with the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron, and it had participated in Operation El Dorado Canyon, which was the US's incursion of Libya in 1986. From 2000 to 2003, I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath as the Wing Historian and did a lot of research about that operation for articles and pamphlets. The 495th was deactivated by the time I was in England, but I had many dealings with its sisters, the 492d, 493d, and 494th.

I had lots of other stops, but none like that one. So cool.

The only other thing of significance today was the weather. I was up at 0500 and inside McDonald's before 0600, where I waited for some daylight. It did turn very cold last night, and I used the battery packs on both my hoodie and my socks. I needed the daylight because it was so foggy, and it was that super cold fog that's almost freezing. Everything was cold and damp, including me.

I put on all my cold gear this morning except the insoles because I used my cold weather boots. I cranked up the gloves, but I didn't need to turn on the jacket or pants. Just having the gear on underneath my riding suit was enough to keep the cold out.

I switched out the plug in gloves for my lighter weight ones sometime during the morning, but I had to get rid of the rest of the gear at my noon selfie stop. I also put on my stubby gloves, but those only lasted till the next stop. The wind chill was just too cold for fingerless gloves. And it didn't get warmer. By the time I got to the Louisville area, not only was I putting on my heavy gloves, but I was pulling out the cord so I could plug them in because my hands were so cold. But that did the trick and I got to Powder Keg Harley-Davidson about 2030 tonight.

I had a sandwich and a beer while charging my phones at the restaurant across the street and I'm now camped in the Powder Keg parking lot next to a light pole that has an outlet on it, which means I get to use my space heater tonight 👍😁. This little heater rocks. If I leave it on the high fan and hottest temperature, it will sweat me out of this tent. I love it, but I don't get to use it very often because I'm not usually by an outlet. Winning!!!!

Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

  • Helluva way to start

    15 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

As of today, I'm on the bike full-time, but I had a helluva start.

Problem #1: mud sucks. East Texas went through a huge storm for about 24 hours starting Friday night. This morning, although it was no longer raining, the ground was completely saturated. But I had to leave this morning, so I braved the mud...for about 3 seconds. Then I got to use my jack again 🤦. Oh well. That's why I have it. I'll say it again though. Mud sucks.

I made it the rest of the way off my property, then a few miles down the dirt road, which was enough time for Problem #2 to strike. My music stopped playing. [If you have ever ridden with me, then you know this is an extremely serious, possibly trip-ending issue.] When I got into town, I pulled over and spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out why. The phone was playing. The bike was bluetoothed to the phone and showed it was playing. My headset was on...but not connected to the bike. 🤔

In the settings, my WHIM (Wireless Headset Interface Module) was no longer listed. Nor my CB. And my cigarette power adapter wasn't charging. And my heated grips didn't work. With all of that not working, I'm pretty sure a blew a fuse. I don't have any and don't know how to do it, but I'm getting service done on Tuesday. My workaround was to take out my earplugs and put in my wired earbuds, then plug them into my phone. For power, I have a USB-A that plugs into my battery tender, and I also carry a battery pack. That kept me charged and dancing all day 👍.

I made a lot of stops for pics, as you can see by the attachments. Unfortunately, none of the dealerships were open (very few are open on Sundays). It was a good day, but I really missed my heated grips. I had to put on my thick gloves before dark because of the wind chill, but my Aerostich riding suit kept the rest of me warm.

I'm camped at Bumpus HD of Memphis and wearing my battery-powered hoodie and socks. It's not that cold right now, but it may drop tonight and I want to be ready.

  • 190 miles for 100 bucks

    13 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

  • Beeline Home

    12 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

My brother and sister-in-law had to work this morning, so we were up at 5:00 and gone before 6:00. I made a beeline home because I also had things to do today.

Before I left yesterday, I loaded my other Harley on the trailer so I could take it to Lone Star Harley-Davidson today. She has some electrical issues that three different dealerships have not been able to figure out, so I'm working directly with Harley Tech Services to get a field tech out to look at her. But because of this huge trip, I needed to leave her where the field tech can get to her whenever they come. Lone Star graciously agreed to store the Diablo and let the field tech access her while I'm out on my trip. It's a 2022 Low Rider St El Diablo, a very special edition of only 1,500 bikes made. I love her, but I don't trust her, which is why I now have the Road Glide. But fingers crossed we'll get it figured out and I can get her back on the road.

BTW, because she is El Diablo #945, her name is Luci as in Lucifer and 9+4+5=18=6+6+6 😈.

  • It's My Birthday!!!

    11 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Today is my 55th birthday! I'm going to my brother and sister-in-law's house for dinner and spending the night. I figured I would pick up a couple of stops on my way there.

I hit two Ride To Eat (RTE) locations, but I didn't eat at either. Instead, I got a massive baked potato at a barbecue stand inside a gas station stop. Oh yummy! I'm glad I didn't get the brisket on top of it, which looked and smelled amazing, but I would have been too full for dinner tonight.

I also got a picture of the Van Zandt County veterans memorial F-4 static aircraft for the AULDR challenge, and I swung by two Harley dealers. Unfortunately, Stampede Harley-Davidson in Burleson TX is now closed. They still have their sign up though, so it must have been very recent. The sign on the door said they combined with Fort Worth HD, which was the other one I stopped at.

If you're ever in the DFW area, I highly recommend having a meal at La Hacienda Ranch in Colleyville. Not only is the Tex-Mex food outstanding, but it's also the location of the world's first frozen margarita! The founder Mariano Martinez modified a soft serve ice cream machine in 1971, and that machine is now gifted to the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History 😲. Too cool (pun intended) 🤣.

The best part about dinner tonight, though, was that my brother secretly invited some of my cousins and my aunt. Oh it was so amazing to see everyone. It was a very enjoyable and memorable birthday, the best one in quite some time 💜.

  • I got my hair done!

    10 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Well, I spent most of my day in bumper to bumper traffic around Dallas collecting four more Harley dealerships and a mural at the American Legion near where my parents lived.

Man, I forgot how terrible traffic is here. And the same roads that have been under construction for the past 6 years (at least) seem to be in even worse condition than 6 years ago. Luckily, I didn't nail any of the huge potholes in the highway or drop my front tire into the massive gaps between the lanes. Bonus: only two cars pulled into me, both swerving back into their lanes when I hit my Denali Sound Bomb horn 🤣.

After surviving I-635 and taking back roads through DFW Airport to avoid I-35E South--a.k.a. The Parking Lot--I got to the hair school in Grand Prairie an hour early, so I had lunch at Torchy's Tacos. Really good, but $6 for one taco is nuts.

I had some fun with my hair today 🤣. The blond on the sides won't last past the next haircut, but the red should stay for a while, well, at least until it finally gets cut, too.

All in all, another good day of riding. Plus, I got home just before dark 👍.

  • Perfect Weather Again

    9 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Another day of perfect weather here in East Texas! 80 or so for the high, around 55 for the low last night. Just right for riding, so of course, that's what I did today!

I popped over to Shreveport to pick up some AULDR stops and 2 Harley dealerships. Even though it's Monday, there wasn't as much traffic as I expected. Maybe everyone took the day off after getting too wasted yesterday during the game I didn't watch because the Cowboys weren't playing. Oh well. After so many years of living and traveling outside the country, I lost touch with sports. And I honestly don't miss any of them.

Anyway, it was an uneventful ride today. Several stops, but I didn't meet anyone. (Both HDs were closed, as is typical for Mondays.) No close calls, truckers cutting me off, or animals jumping out at me, so cool.

BTW, when I got home, I made it onto my parking pad without hitting a gopher hole, so I didn't need to use my jack today 😜. I could use Chevy Chase's help with the gophers out here 🏌️ 🤣.

The only thing that went wrong was that I forgot my Wild Ass motorcycle cushion 😞. The stock seat on my bike is not a good fit for me, and Wild Ass makes it waaaay more comfortable. But I just put it on so I'll have it tomorrow!

  • Damn it I forgot the tracker again

    7 Şubat, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

I am now completely relocated from Cincinnati back to Texas. I am so very happy to be out of the horribly cold weather up there and back to the lovely Texas winter.

Today is about 65°F and barely a cloud in the sky. So naturally I had to take a motorcycle ride. I picked up I made it down to Lone Star Harley-Davidson and Tyler and then run around for another just shy of 200 miles to collect some America's Ultimate Long Distance Rider points.

I'm trying to sell an extra windshield, but the buyer didn't show at Lone Star, which is why I had a big box strapped to the bike all day 🤣.

It was a really great day, not a lot of traffic, warm and clear, very little wind. Just great therapy...until I got back to my rv-barn-dominium. There's so many gophers here and they leave soft spots in my gravel/hay/dirt drive. So I got to use my jack again to pick up the bike after I fell over. 🤦

I decided it was a good opportunity to show y'all how I pick up a 1,000 lb bike without lifting it, so if you want to see the video, go to my YouTube channel (visit the POPL link below). It's too long to post here. Spoiler alert: I have a motorcycle jack 💪.

I'm getting pretty good at using the jack, which I think is a good thing except that I'm using it way too often, which is why I'm getting good at it 🤣. It's a vicious cycle.

I don't know what it is about this Road Glide Limited, but it is so top heavy that any little turn of the handlebars at slow speed just tips you right over. It's happened enough now that when I feel it going, I just keep my hands on the grips, pull my knees into the tank, and let it do what it wants, then brush myself off afterwards.

If motorcycling was easy, everybody would do it, right? 🤣

  • I forgot to turn on the tracker

    15 Ocak, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 21 °F

Today was my second day on the bike this year and I knocked out about 300 miles. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn on my tracker, so the map isn't going to show today, but with 99, 620 mi left this year, I don't think that's going to make a huge difference 🤣.

I spent all day in the snow and cold collecting photographs for the Harley-Davidson dealership challenge (5), the America's Ultimate Long Distance Rider challenge (21), and the Ride to Eat Across the USA challenge (1). It was only 300 miles, but it took about 13 hours because of all the stops, plus I stopped to eat lunch and thaw out a little bit.

While eating lunch at Culver's in Dayton, I chatted with a lovely couple who also ride and are spending the entire year of their 50th wedding anniversary going on 50 mini trips and adventures. What an awesome idea! Kudos on you two and congrats for being able to put up with each other for that long 🤣.

  • Finally On The Road...For The Day

    7 Ocak, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Hey, everybody! I finally had the time and the weather to get out on the bike and begin my 100,000-mile ride!

Officially, my odometer and starting mileage are 46,667.

In 45°F and overcast sky, I headed up to Mason, Ohio, to visit one of my sponsors, Powder Keg Harley-Davidson, who threw a battery on the bike for me this morning. I put on my heated gear underneath my Aerostich riding suit, but I never turned it on--not even the gloves--and had to take it off when I got to the dealership. This suit is the bomb! There is not one seam crack and absolutely no air gets in the suit with all the zippers zipped. It is fantastic!

After that, the sun started to come out and I headed back to Kentucky for a picture and check-in at High Stakes Harley-Davidson. One of my riding goals this year is to win Harley's Ride 365 Dealership Check-In Challenge. 2 down, 650 to go!

I only logged 86 miles today, but it's a start!
