Early To Bed & No Mosquitoes!!
16 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F
Like usual, I was up and gone by 0430. The morning is just a blur; I was on autopilot 🤣. When I got to the first stop, it took me more than a few seconds to figure out where I was and which photo I needed to take 🤣😳.
I heard the smoke is all the way into New York now. Wow! I've been in it all day, of course, but I didn't have any ashes falling on me, so 👍. It's not bad this evening where I'm camped at Appleton HD. It's hanging like a fog without the dampness, and I can't smell it. Of course, I probably can't smell anything right now after inhaling smoke all day 🤣.
I stopped at 1245 to eat some lunch and cool off. I know, McDonald's is terrible, but you can get a chicken sandwich, 4 nuggets, fries, and a drink for only $5. $5! Plus, this store had the soda machine where you could get refills (many are now charging for refills), so I made sure to fill up my water bottles before I left. An hour later, I wasn't sweating anymore and ready to go.
The afternoon was also a blur, but I cut out about 150 miles off today's route by skipping two Ride To Eat locations. That gave me some extra time this evening, which I'm going to use right now for sleep. And I don't have to lather up in mozzie spray either! Yay! G'nite! 💪
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

Smoke on the Water...actually, everywhere
15 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌙 77 °F
I rolled in only 15 minutes this morning without really trying 👍. I love my new pack layout. I got cold in the night, and just opened my saddlebag next to me and pulled out my sleeping bag. Sweet as!!
My second stop was a Ride To Eat restaurant that was actually open, so I popped in and had a bite and coffee. Great start.
Not long after getting going, I could see a bit of haze and smell just a touch of smoke. I figured there must be a fire quite aways off. I was right, but unfortunately, I got closer to them as the day progressed. Like, ashes falling on me close 😳.
I breathed through my gaiter and nose most of the day, but I can still feel my scratchy throat and closed sinuses 😞. I considered hoteling it tonight just to get out of the smoke, but it's literally everywhere. Oh well. I'll live 🤣.
Really good day other than the smoke. Only one car tried to kill me, and I barely saw any semis 👏👏👏.
I'm camped at Apol's HD and I have again bathed in mozzie spray. I found some of the 98% DEET today, so yay!! There are a couple in my tent, but they'll starve tonight 🤣.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

75,000 Miles Down!
14 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌙 72 °F
I rolled out of Crosby at 0630, a bit later than I wanted, but my tires were low.
My first stop was the International Peace Garden, which is in No Man's Land. You technically leave the US, but you don't enter Canada. Coming back in the US, you must have either a driver's license or birth certificate. No passport is necessary. You still have to turn off the bike, take off your helmet, and spend 15 minutes explaining what you were doing, wait for them to run your tags, and explain that you don't have any MC affiliations 🤦. They finally let me back in.
My other cool stop was the geographic center of North America. Neat.
I spent the rest of the day doing what I do, churning the miles, snapping the pics.
I got held up a few times for road construction diversions, dodged a couple of deer, and finally made my way to Warroad MN, one of my Lap of the 48 locations. I'm tucked in behind a church and crashing without the tent. I bathed in mozzie repellent first though 🤣!
But I'm really excited because I rolled 75,000 miles today! I'm well on my way past the 100,000-mile goal. Thanks for sticking with me this long. The end is in sight 💪🤞.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

Slow Start...Strong Finish
13 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌙 73 °F
I was really enjoying my hotel room this morning and didn't get out of bed until after 0900, and I didn't check out until 1030 🤣. After loading the bike, I walked across the parking lot for a quick lunch so I wouldn't have to stop soon. I missed the hotel breakfast 🤣.
Speaking of loading the bike, I reconfigured my entire pack. I emptied the bike first, and emptied my backseat bag with my camping gear:
- In my right saddlebag I placed my tent, poles, mallet, stakes, air mattress, and picnic blanket.
- In my left I placed my map book, laptop, sleeping bag, pillow, military overshirt, umbrella, helmet cleaner, spare clipboard light, insect repellent, spare gloves, and snacks.
- In my backseat bag I placed all of my bike stuff (oil, air pump, tools, battery pack, etc.), my towel, my vest, and my heated gear.
- In the tour pack I placed all of my clothing, including the heated hoodie and socks I had with my camping gear, my flipflops, my bathroom kit, my laundry kit, and my laptop paraphernalia. (Really the only change was taking out the towel and laptop and adding the hoodie/socks and flipflops.)
This new setup should save me time setting up and breaking down camp, which doesn't really matter right now, but will during the Hoka Hey in just a couple of weeks from now. 😳
Despite leaving so late, I still made it all the way into North Dakota. I have to argue with Nevada, though. US-50 is absolutely NOT the loneliest highway. It's Montana Highway 200. 120 miles of absolutely nothing east of Lewistown. Barbed wire fences, a few telephone poles, a couple of cows, and a whole lot of grass. That's it. Oh, and 14 miles of construction that took an hour to get through. With 98°F heat. With no shade and too windy for the umbrella. With no road, just gravel and dirt. Ugh.
Once I got up to the top of the state, I realized that my camping plans weren't going to work out. Mosquitoes. So, I grabbed a hotel room. I can't get to my next photo location until after 0800 and I'm 2.5 hours away from it, so I don't have to be up at 0400. 👍

I asked Chat GPT to revise my poem
12 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F
I had a few minutes today to play with ChatGPT. Several months ago, on a whim, I wrote a quick poem about long distance riding, and I was curious what AI could do with it written in the styes of well-known authors. Let me know which one you like the best. [I'm torn between Frost and Hawthorne...]
----------------------
By Nancy Webb & only me, sadly:
do you ride or DO YOU RIDE?!
A bright morning rises to lighten your heart
You jump on the bike; it roars to a start
The rush of the road and the wail of the wind
Are just what your soul needs time and again
But not too long after there’s a gloom in the sky
“I didn’t bring rain gear,” you think with a sigh
The skies open up and the road disappears
You tighten your grip and press on through the fear
A hundred miles down with 900 to go
When you look up ahead, “Oh good lord, is that snow?!”
The rain turns to sleet then the sleet into ice
When you set out today, the forecast was nice
But now comes the hail that cracks like a punch
So you stop for some gas and a roller dog lunch
Back into the fray, which the ride has become,
“Why do I do this?,” you say to no one
But you and the bike keep logging the miles
And pretty soon your grimace turns into a smile
‘Cause for a long distance rider, the sun’s always shining
No matter the weather, there'll be no resigning
The clouds of tomorrow may tout silver-lining
But even on days like today, there’s NO WHINING!
----------------------
By Nancy Webb & Chat GPT in the style of Robert Frost
A Thousand Miles
The morning found the fields in quiet light,
And woke the road before the waking town.
I loosed the waiting engine to its song,
And let the miles unfold beneath the wheels.
The wind came first, a companion without speech,
With hands unseen that tugged at sleeve and thought.
It seemed enough to carry off the weight
A restless heart had gathered through the week.
Then, somewhere past the promise of the dawn,
The western sky drew on a darker coat.
"I left the rain behind," I told myself,
As though the clouds were bound by what I'd packed.
Before long every mile was washed in gray.
The painted lines dissolved beneath the storm,
And all that marked the pathway was belief
That somewhere still the pavement carried on.
A hundred miles lay quietly behind,
Nine hundred yet were hidden in the hills.
I raised my eyes and found the mountain white,
As if the season had forgotten time.
Rain hardened first to sleet, then glassy ice.
The forecast, made in comfort, lost its claim.
The hail arrived with sharp and sudden voice,
To question every reason for the ride.
So I found shelter where the fuel was sold,
Shared bread enough with strangers passing through,
And warmed my hands around an ordinary meal
Before returning to the waiting road.
Again the wheels took up their steady work.
Again I asked the air why I came here.
The question drifted backward with the wind,
Content to leave no answer but the miles.
For there are travelers fashioned by the road
Who measure fairer weather from within.
The sun is not a thing that fills the sky,
But something carried underneath the ribs.
The storm may keep its kingdom for a day,
The snow may claim the mountain and the pass.
Yet every mile surrendered to the wheel
Returns a quieter courage than it took.

The Road Has Teeth
Morning lies to you.
It paints the sky blue, warms your shoulders, whispers that today is just another ride. You thumb the starter, and the motorcycle growls awake like an old animal that's hungry for pavement. The first few miles are medicine. The wind scrubs away every worry until there's nothing left but the engine, the road, and the next horizon.
Then the sky changes its mind.
Clouds pile up without asking permission. You remember the rain gear hanging safely in the garage, dry as a church pew.
"That was smart," you mutter.
The rain doesn't fall.
It attacks.
The highway blurs into a ribbon of black glass. Every passing truck throws a wall of water over your helmet, and suddenly the only thing separating you from disaster is two tire patches no bigger than your hands.
A hundred miles behind.
Nine hundred ahead.
You glance toward the mountains and laugh, because sometimes laughing is all that's left.
Snow.
Of course it's snow.
The rain becomes sleet. The sleet hardens into ice. Hail starts hammering your helmet hard enough to make you wonder if the sky has finally decided to finish the job. The weather report from this morning feels like a joke with a cruel punchline.
You stop at a gas station that smells of gasoline, burnt coffee, and old regrets.
The roller dog isn't good.
It isn't even food, probably.
But it's hot, and right now that's enough.
Back outside, the motorcycle waits.
Not patiently.
Almost expectantly.
You swing a leg over the saddle, thumb the starter, and the engine answers with that familiar rumble. It's asking the same question you are.
*Why are we doing this?*
Neither of you answers.
You just keep going.
Somewhere, mile after mile, the storm stops feeling like an enemy. It becomes part of the ride, another chapter you didn't ask for but will tell later with a grin that nobody who wasn't there will ever completely understand.
That's the strange thing about long-distance riders.
They aren't chasing sunshine.
They're chasing the version of themselves that only shows up after the rain, the sleet, the hail, the doubt, and the miles have stripped everything else away.
The weather can throw every ugly thing it has.
The road can bare every tooth.
You'll still ride on.
Because quitting has never been part of the forecast.

By Nancy Webb & ChatGPT in the style of William Shakespeare
The Rider's Constancy
When golden morn doth ope her radiant eye,
And chase the sable shadows from the land,
Thou mount'st thy steed of steel with merry cry,
Its thunder answering to thy ready hand.
The wanton winds do sport about thy face,
The open road doth bid thy spirit sing;
No sweeter physic hath the weary race
Than freedom borne upon the engine's wing.
Yet soon the heavens knit a somber brow,
And sable clouds assemble in the west.
"Alas, no cloak 'gainst rain have I brought now,"
Thou sigh'st, foreboding lodges in thy breast.
Then doth the firmament its flood unseal,
Till earth and sky in watery veil are cast.
Thy faithful hands grip fast the turning wheel,
Resolved to hold though tempest rage at last.
A hundred miles behind thy course are laid,
Nine hundred yet their silent watch do keep;
Thou lift'st thine eyes, and, sorely dismayed,
Behold'st the mountains clothed in winter's sleep.
The rain to biting sleet doth swiftly turn,
The sleet to ice that chills both bone and breath.
Though fair the morning's promise seemed at morn,
The day now wears the countenance of death.
Then hail descends with drums of heaven's ire,
Each frozen stone a herald of the storm.
Thou seek'st an inn where humble meats inspire,
And warmth restores thy travel-wearied form.
Once more unto the waiting road thou'rt drawn,
Where trials prove more constant than the sun.
"Why choose I this?" escapes thee with a yawn,
Yet answer comes from neither soul nor one.
Still mile by mile thy faithful course proceeds;
The frown departs, a quiet smile takes birth.
For steadfast hearts are known by hardy deeds,
Not by the favor of the gentle earth.
The sun resides not only in the sky,
But in the breast of those who dare endure.
Though storms their fiercest batteries may apply,
The rider's steadfast purpose standeth sure.
Let others seek fair weather's fleeting grace;
Let fearful tongues of silver linings pine.
Who loves the road meets Fortune face to face,
And spends no breath in fruitless, vain repine.
----------------------
By Nancy Webb & ChatGPT in the style of Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Trial of the Open Road
The morning came with such a cheerful countenance that a man might well believe Providence had spread before him a day untouched by sorrow. With a lightened heart I mounted my faithful machine, whose voice awakened the quiet air with a confident roar, and together we committed ourselves to the long ribbon of road stretching toward an unseen horizon.
There is a peculiar grace in the fellowship of wind and motion. As the miles slipped quietly beneath the wheels, every earthly burden seemed to loosen its grasp, and the soul, relieved of its common weight, found room once more to breathe.
Yet happiness, being no permanent resident of this world, is often followed by its shadow.
A gathering darkness climbed the heavens, and I recalled, with no little regret, the rain garments left behind, as though fair weather had persuaded me that prudence was unnecessary. Such are the small vanities by which men are frequently instructed.
Soon the clouds loosed their full displeasure. Rain descended with relentless purpose until the road itself appeared to dissolve into a wavering uncertainty. My hands clung more firmly to the handlebars, not from confidence, but because fear itself demanded something solid to grasp.
A hundred miles had yielded to perseverance.
Nine hundred remained to test it.
Lifting my eyes, I found the distant heights clothed not in welcome, but in snow. The rain surrendered itself to sleet, the sleet to ice, until the very elements seemed engaged in proving whether resolve possesses substance beyond fair intentions. The morning forecast, once accepted with easy faith, had become another reminder that certainty belongs chiefly to those who have not yet been corrected by experience.
Then came the hail, striking with a severity that bordered upon judgment itself. I sought refuge where fuel, warmth, and a humble meal might be found. A simple roller dog, unremarkable by any generous measure, became a feast enough for a traveler who had learned that gratitude often attends the plainest provisions.
When at last I returned to the waiting motorcycle, I found myself asking aloud, though no companion rode beside me, why any reasonable soul would willingly submit to such hardship.
The road, as always, withheld its answer.
It asked only that I continue.
And so the miles accumulated, quietly, almost imperceptibly, until I discovered that the storm had altered less than I had. What had first appeared an adversary had become an instructor, revealing that endurance is seldom born beneath cloudless skies.
Thus it seems to me that the long-distance rider carries within himself a sun no tempest can wholly extinguish. The heavens may darken, the rain may harden into ice, and tomorrow may promise yet another trial beyond the next bend. Still, the truest traveler presses onward, not because the road is kind, but because the journey has taught him that complaint lightens no burden, while steadfastness transforms even suffering into its own quiet reward.
----------------------
By Nancy Webb & ChatGPT in the style of Dean Koontz* [and there has to be a dog]
* ChatPT: I can’t write in Dean Koontz’s exact voice, but I can create an original version with some broad qualities often found in his kind of storytelling
The Dog Who Chased the Storm
The morning began with a lie.
Not a cruel lie. Not the kind told by people with empty hearts. It was the gentle sort, the kind the sky tells when it opens in blue and gold and convinces you that the world has finally decided to be kind.
The motorcycle waited in the driveway, silent but eager, its metal skin holding the memory of every road it had ever conquered. Beside it sat Scout, my old road dog, watching me with those steady eyes that seemed to know more about tomorrow than I did.
"Fair skies," the weather report had promised.
Scout sneezed.
I should have listened.
The engine came alive, a deep thunder rolling through the morning, and we moved into the open country where the wind ran alongside us like an old friend. The miles fell away. The worries fell away. There are moments when a rider and a machine become something more than either alone, when the road seems less like a path and more like a conversation.
Scout understood that.
Dogs understand things humans spend years trying to explain.
Then the clouds arrived.
They did not drift in politely. They gathered with purpose, dark and heavy, as if the sky had remembered an old debt and come to collect. I glanced at the empty space where my rain gear should have been.
"Brilliant planning," I muttered.
Scout looked away.
Even he knew better than to defend me.
The rain came hard. The highway vanished beneath sheets of water, and the world narrowed to a few feet of wet pavement, the grip of the handlebars, and the quiet confidence of the dog beside me.
Fear rode with us for a while.
But fear is a poor passenger. It complains. It takes up too much room. Eventually, you learn to let it sit quietly in the back.
A hundred miles behind us.
Nine hundred ahead.
Then I saw the mountains.
White.
Impossible.
Snow in a place where snow had no business being. Rain became sleet. Sleet became ice. The morning's cheerful prediction became a forgotten promise from someone who had never stood in the storm.
The hail arrived like a fistful of frozen stones thrown from the heavens.
We stopped for fuel at a lonely station where the lights buzzed overhead and the coffee tasted like it had been waiting since the previous century. I bought the only meal that looked brave enough to survive the day: a roller dog turning slowly beneath a heat lamp.
Scout approved.
Or perhaps he was simply hungry enough to forgive me.
Back on the road, I asked the question every long-distance rider eventually asks.
"Why do we do this?"
The storm offered no answer.
The motorcycle offered no answer.
Scout rested his head against my shoulder and offered the answer dogs always give.
Keep going.
So we did.
Somewhere beyond the worst of the weather, something changed. The storm was still there, but it no longer owned us. The miles were still long, but they no longer felt heavy. My hands relaxed. My shoulders loosened. The grimace became a smile.
That is the secret of those who ride far.
They do not chase perfect weather.
They chase the person they become when perfect weather disappears.
The sun is not always above you.
Sometimes it rides beside you.
Sometimes it has four paws, a wet nose, and a stubborn belief that every road, no matter how dark, eventually leads somewhere worth reaching.Leggi altro

Sometimes It's Good To Stop
12 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F
I used up all of my luck for the day before noon, so I stopped very early.
First, a turkey hen with her whole brood of poults casually walking across the road. 💩💩💩 out of my mouth because I can't stop soon enough. I split the brood, but miraculously didn't hit any of them!! Time to change drawers 😳.
Second, I left my heated gear jacket laying on the back of my bike. 40 miles later, I let out a massive gasp when I remembered and looked in my mirror to see it flapping away at over 80 mph. $225 to replace, so I definitely would've gone back to find it, but didn't have to. Apparently the sleeve hooked itself to the bungy cord. I guess it wants to find out how this ends 🤣🤣.
Like I said, all my day's luck used up early. Sometimes it's good to stop.

Another Service Complete
11 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌙 73 °F
Made it to Spokane and Lone Wolf HD about 1300 this afternoon. That's 2.5 days early!!! 💪 And they were able to slide me into their service schedule!
Just a change of engine oil and filter. I'm having the full service done once I'm back in Ohio.
Exhausted. Will catch up soon. Planning to ride Going To The Sun Road in the morning. 🤞
----------------------------
It's later.
There were neither Facehuggers nor rats to pester me in the night, so I left the rest stop at 0430. I squiggled my way north and finally landed in Spokane. I had to make a trip to Zip's, a local fast food joint, before going to the dealership.
They slid me in for service, and I slid out disappointed that they had found another main gear seal leak. I just had it replaced 8,000 miles ago...under warranty...but it's the cost of time and effort that pisses me off. Ugh. It's just a weep this time, so I'm sure it will hold until I get back to Ohio.
It's been 6 nights since I left Golden CO and my last hotel stay. It's time for a shower and air conditioning. Beside, I want to ride Going To The Sun Road in daylight, so I figured Kalispell was a great stopping point. Everyone else did, too, because the cheapest motel I could find was over $200. Nope. Church parking lot is it then LOL. At this point, one more day without a shower isn't going to make a difference for anyone.

Tired
10 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F
Too tired to type. Will fill in later. Have 500 miles to ride to get to Spokane by lunchtime. Wish me luck.
--------------------------
It's later.
I left Sound HD at 0430 after only 3 hours of sleep. I booked it up to Blaine WA to grab the last of the four 4 Corners locations on the SCMA USA Four Corners Ride, but I'm doing them for AULDR.
After another Tour of Honor photo, I wound my way through North Cascades National Park, which is HOG's 50 Rides location and an amazing road! Must ride!! I popped out of there in Winthrop WA. The last time I was there was 2024 when the Diablo decided she didn't want to go anymore and quit on me. Bad girl. No problems with Michael though. Good boy.
I headed further south back into Oregon to grab its last Tour of Honor stop, but the rest of the day was just fine. Other than being exhausted and dancing to stay awake, all good.
I found a rest area with only a couple of folks there. It had a kind of lean-to, half-building thing with a couple of historical posters peeling off the walls. But it was really dark against the back wall.
I thought, "Oooo! Perfect! Right on front of the bike, but totally dark." I picked up my cot and walked inside. Something moved. Scurried. Down the wall opposite me, from the ceiling to the floor. I didn't actually see it; I just saw the movement of shadows. What was that?!
The first thing that crossed my very tired mind...no kidding, I was that tired...was a Facehugger. You know, the weird spider-like thing from the Alien movies. Then I thought, probably a rat. Either way, I wasn't sleeping in there. So, I put the cot on the sidewalk under the lightpole next to the bike and had a great sleep. No Facehuggers allowed on this trip!

Long day
10 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F
Forgot to get a dated business receipt (DBR) for my stop at the Washington State Capitol. So at 2100 I turned around and rode 100 mi South to get some chicken fries at Burger King, which included a DBR. I just rode the hundred miles back North and got to Sound Harley without killing myself. But it was a close call.
Will fill in the rest of this later. Got to sleep
-------------------
It's later.
I found two roads today without any construction on them! The only problem was that they were the two roads that needed construction more than ever. I stood up on the bike for about 36 miles. "Stood" meaning both feet planted fully on the boards, knees straight but not locked, and butt resting against the back rest. I can't quite stand up all the way for any length of time. Anyway, it was long enough for my knees to be killing me later.
After getting my capitol photo [and not getting my DBR, see above], I-5 was pretty normal for I-5. You know. Semis trying to squish you. Cars sliding in between you and the car that's a giant gap of 7 feet in front of you. All of them only moving out of the left lane when they have to exit. Normal.
But Seattle area mission accomplished.

I made it from Donner Pass on the western side of California all the way across the state to the eastern coast north of Eureka. I took squiggly roads the whole way. Bad move.
Leaving the rest area at 0430, I veered off of I-80 onto CA-20, which is a great road. The last time I rode it, in 2022, it was under construction and just a single lane at one point. No way it's still under construction. Um, yeah, it still is. My first Stop then Go.
I finally got off of CA-20 and onto CA-70, which led me to I-5 for a few miles until I hopped onto one of my favorite roads, CA-299 through redwoods to Eureka. Again, Stop then Go, twice I think. But at least it wasn't raining this time.
After CA-299, I went north on US-101. Yep, you guessed it. Stop. 30-minute wait. Then Go. But only go 30 mph in a 55 zone because of the RVs and semis 🤦. There was some creative passing going on today. If not, I'd still be in NorCal.
When US-101 veered to the coast, I veered inland onto US-199. Again, construction. My GPS said it was faster to ride around the construction--250 miles--then to go through it for 70 miles 😳. I went through it. The GPS was probably correct 🤣.
I got to stay on I-5 for a while, no construction, then took a Byway on US-20. Yep, construction. Another Stop. 30 minutes. Go. 😭. By this time I was horribly pissed off. Every road. Every fucking road.
After that, I cut back north to Salem for the Oregon capitol building, then back on I-5 to get as far north as possible to try to avoid morning traffic. I made it north of Portland and into Washington, where I'm camped at a rest area. It's what there was.
Tough day. Lots of clutch work. Some fun bits on the squigglies when there wasn't anyone going 30 mph under the speed limit...which wasn't very often 😓.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️

Making Great Time
7 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌙 55 °F
I'm a full day ahead of schedule, having made all of my Utah stops, including the Capitol, and surviving Route 50 from I-15 in Utah all the way to Carson City NV, my second Capitol for the day.💪
50 actually wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The hottest part, 98°F, was the 100 mile stretch to get to the Nevada border. But once in Nevada, I kept going through mountain passes at 6,000-7,000 feet, which kept the temperature down around 85-90, so not too bad.
I made the entire 190 miles without stopping for gas. I taped two bottles of octane booster to my tank just in case I was getting to fumes. It was a good mpg experiment for the Hoka Hey.
And Nevada was easier, too, in that I've already ridden the 175 miles from Austin to Carson City, just last month, so snap.
The only thing of note was having to stop to get a squished bird out of my wiring. Poor little guy. He flew right into me. I hate that. 😓

Oh, what an awesome time I had in Golden! Awesome people, awesome food, awesome drinks, and awesome activities. There's a tubing creek in the center of town! I spent some time in the park at the big party, and then the evening I went to a place called Gnarly's. It's an '80s arcade with a bar and a stage. All the video games are free. They had a comedy show with six different comics, most from Austin. It lasted a couple hours and it was really good way to cap off the night.
Today I was back on the road. First I got service at Avalanche Harley, then I tore out across Colorado and am now in Utah. Good day of riding after a great break!!

Golden CO 💪
3 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F
I had trouble falling asleep, not going down until after 2300. But at 0245, I was wide awake. I set up my tent at the edge of a high school parking lot. I usually avoid schools just because, but it was a massive parking lot and fairly dark. Anyway, despite being WELL outside of the chain link fence, the sprinklers did not stay inside the chain link fence. The baseball field, the bike, and my tent all got a good dousing. I drug the tent out, but two diffe6heads were having a go at me, so by the time I found a dry spot, they had turned off 🤦. My brain didn't turn off though, so I've been awake ever since.
I kept to my rule:--no riding between 0200-0400--and rolled at 0430. At 0700 I faced a massive but brief storm and decided not to ride through it. Good choice 😳.
An hour sheltered under a Methodist Church and the storm passed. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful.
I made it to Golden and have checked into the hotel, taken a shower, consumed my free margarita (first tequila I've had in about 35 years), and am now on my way to walk Downtown Golden. Don't ask how much the hotel cost, but it's totally worth it!

Going Strong 💪

I had a great day cruising from Sturgis to the South Dakota capitol to the Nebraska capitol. I even took time to eat lunch at one of my Ride to Eat locations and had a terrific lobster and shrimp po'boy with sweet potato tots. Yum 🤤!!
I also got the last South Dakota and Nebraska Tour of Honor stops, giving me 191 points. The couple in second and third have 123. 💪
I have about 700 miles to go to reach Golden CO, my next service stop. I'll get there tomorrow and find a hotel for two nights so I can enjoy the 4th of July festivities. My service is on the 5th 👍.

Ever Seen a Seagull's Cloaca?
1 luglio, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F
Well I have. And it was puckered up tight! 🤣🤣🤣
A flock of seagulls (great band) was on the yellow center line feasting on some road kill. I kind of rolled off the throttle but didn't brake (my normal protocol for birds), and they all took off like birds do (except ducks in South Dakota standing on the freeway or walking their ducklings across two lanes of 80 mph traffic 😳). Except one seagull decided to fly in front of me in the same direction I was going. I always duck (no pun intended) when I see birds, and it's a good thing I did, because when the draft from the front of the bike sucked him up, he went right over the top of me and thumped my helmet pretty hard. 🤣🤣.
The rest of the day seems pretty uneventful after that 🤣.
Success for getting the Montana State Capitol building, and now I am on my way to the South Dakota State Capitol, but I decided to stop in Sturgis for the night. I wish I had time to go down to Main Street and have a little fun, but I know better if I want to get up at 0400 🤣.
If I can do 1500 miles by the end of 3 July, then I can stay in Golden Colorado for the 4th of July festivities. My next service is the morning of the 5th.
I'm pretty sure I can do 1500 and 2 days 🤣. 🤞

Back on the Road, But Not Until Lunchtime
30 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F
I woke up this morning at 0500 excited to get back on the road. I spent all day yesterday creating new routes and making my next 3 service appointments 🤣. It's a good thing I stayed two nights because a massive storm ripped through here yesterday. It would not have been fun--or probably even possible--to ride in that because the gusts were crazy. The storm blew through and all was calm by the time I went to bed. But I was so happy to be inside and so focused on my routes that I didn't even think to check on the bike after the storm.
About 0530 I took my things out to load up. The first thing I noticed was that my cover wasn't on the bike. I figured the wind must have taken it and started thinking about ordering another one. Then I walked around the other side of the bike and saw the cover shoved in behind my camping gear. I figured someone saved it and thanked them out loud. Then I noticed my handlebars were turned the opposite way. What? Was someone messing with the bike? Huh. Everything was locked and nothing else looked messed with. So, I kept getting ready.
Finally dressed and ready to roll, I checked out of the hotel and went to start the bike. Nothing. Well, a couple of clicks and flashes, but no fuel pump kicking on and no voltage. The bike was dead.
I went back inside, got back my key, and began the arduous process of getting Agero to get me a tow. Yes, Agero. Regardless of what insurance you have, they all use Agero for roadside, even Harley. AAA might be the only one who doesn't. They are an absolute nightmare. Anyway, I started that and waited.
The first provider didn't realize it was a motorcycle and cancelled. Then Agero called me asking if I still wanted them to find me a provider. Well, yes, duh. But, having dealt with them so many times before I doubted that would happen, so I started making my own calls. Or really, call.
The first company I called was Red Top Towing & Recovery and they could come get me around 0800. Cool. I got breakfast after all.
Around 0800, Alex "Al" calls me and says he's only a couple of minutes away and wants to look at the bike. Cool. I meet him and explain how it's completely dead and really needs to be taken to HD. No worries, he says, and goes off to get the rollback. Dude knows what he doing.
In the meantime I go back into the lobby. A woman comes up to me and asks if I'm the one of the white bike. She's Karen from North Carolina and on the Heritage outside. I said yes, the white bike is mine, then she tells me how she and 3 guys picked my bike up off the ground yesterday because the storm blew it over. 😳 Wait. What? She said the wind must've caught the cover and just toppled it. After they picked it up, she took the cover off and turned the handle bars the other direction to make it lean more to the left. Here's the kicker: after the bike tips over, the hazards turn on. They won't turn off until the bike is upright and the key fob is present to trigger the ignition. Since no one told me about the bike, and I failed to check on it, the hazards ran until they killed the battery. 🤦 But thanks so much, Karen for helping my bike out. You're awesome!
Soon after chatting with Karen, Alex came back, hooked me up and took me to HD about 6 miles away from the hotel, where I got a new battery. I rolled out of there about 1130. But I still had two things to do before getting out of town.
First, I wanted bear spray. Parts of Glacier National Park are closed right now because of bear activity. I'm heading to Montana and camping, so I want bear spray. Sport store located and spray bought. Check 👍
Second, Alex was so awesome that I went by they towing company to thank him again. Unfortunately, he had already left for another call, but I met two other employees and fell in love with the company dog. Everyone was so great!!! Check 👍
Two missions accomplished, so it was time to really roll. 80 mph on I-94 to Montana, then 70 on the back roads. It's easy to make a lot of miles in a little time up here.
I was considering stopping to camp at one of my photo locations until I actually stopped the bike to take my photo. I was immediately swarmed by mosquitoes. Bad enough that I had to keep my visor down. Ugh. Not camping.
Now, I'm in a little motel with the bike tucked up under the eaves just in case another storm comes through. It's an evening of scattered showers and I was just about to get drenched when I found this place. Awesome!
I've had a shower, noshed on a few garlic dill cheese curds, and dug out my DEET. I'll sleep well tonight, for sure!
What a way to end the month 🤣!!

Divert To Bismarck
28 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F
Although I set my alarm for 0400 this morning, the storm was still raging outside, so I reset it for 0500 and then 0600. I was rolling before 0630 trying to shave time off my ETA to Montana.
I was on I-90 with a speed limit of 80 mph and it still didn't feel fast enough. I considered some seriously risky and stupid maneuvers, but thankfully I chose not to execute. But I started thinking about how stressed I've been. This is not fun. And motorcycling is supposed to be fun. I started rethinking everything.
If you're reading this post, then you probably read my post from this morning about reprioritizing. It's the end of the day now, and I am very glad that I made that decision.
As I was squiggling through South Dakota to get to Montana I realized I was only a hundred miles south of Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota. So I decided to head due north to Bismarck before going to Montana so I could sit down with my computer and figure out my new routes.
BTW, if you're following my journey, you're probably thinking Bismarck sounds familiar. You're right! I left Bismarck exactly 7 days ago, and I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that fact.
BTW #2, if you're ever in South Dakota, please make sure you plan your gas stops. This state does not put any warning signs that you are 150 miles from the next gas station. And if you squiggle through the state, as in left right left right left right, then it is very possible to miss every gas station. Also, the numerous reservations in the state have the right to close their borders and not allow outsiders to enter even for gas. You've been warned 😉.
Anyway, since it was only 1500 when I got here, I decided to take care of some housekeeping business. First I went to Best Buy to get a new screen protector on my phone. Then I found a hotel and booked it for two nights. Then I took my photo at the capitol building. Then I checked in. A short run to Super Walmart down the street for food and adult beverages, and before 1800 I was in my room, in my sleeping clothes, doing laundry, and drinking one of those beverages 🍻.
Now, laundry is done and I am happily seated behind my computer watching Netflix, refusing to work on my route until tomorrow. I'm taking the night off.

Prioritizing
28 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F
Motorcycling is supposed to be fun, right? Well, it's not. Not for me right now.
I have no doubt that getting my 100,000 miles this year is going to happen, but I've been super stressed about being able to finish the states in alphabetical order before the end of October while also doing all of HOG's touring rallies. I've been riding like a banshee, taking some unnecessary risks and not getting enough rest, relying on caffeine and 5-Hour Energy to get me through the day. That's fine for a couple of weeks during the Hoka Hey, but I can't sustain that for months. I won't.
So, I'm prioritizing. The rallies are more important to me than the states, seeing my friends and making new ones. Therefore, I've decided to continue visiting the state capitol buildings, just not in alphabetical order, which is still an Iron Butt challenge. Right now, I'm on my way to Montana then Nebraska as planned, but when I head towards Nevada, I'll hit Wyoming and Utah along the way.
As much as I abhor not finishing anything I take on, I know this is the correct decision because I immediately felt the weight lift.
Thanks for riding with me on this adventure, and I hope to see you out there. ✌️Leggi altro

Using My Bike's Warranty Again
27 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌬 75 °F
On Thursday at a gas stop I noticed a couple of drips under the crankcase and spots on the left pipe. I thought it was residual from the service. I didn't think much more about it yesterday, but when I woke up this morning, I had the same drips under the bike. So at my first gas stop this morning, about 30 miles down the road, I cleaned underneath the primary and down the pipe as well as I could. When I got to the next gas stop 150 miles later, fresh drips and fluid on the pipe. 😳
I was already headed to Legendary Harley-Davidson in Carroll IA, so I just kept going as planned. I got there right as they opened at 1000, and they rolled Michael in immediately. They figured it was the o-ring on the drain plug. However, when they got him on the lift, they found it to be much more serious.
At 1530, I rolled out with a new transmission main gear seal (the one behind the primary) at a cost of $50, my warranty deductible. Say what you want about warranties, but the one I got on Michael has saved me thousands of dollars. And I just bought another year to keep him covered.
Unfortunately, this ate up all my extra time and has put me behind schedule. But that's the thing with plans, right? I also cut about 2 hours off of my ride tonight because of the very strong wind gusts in front of a big storm that's going to blow through tonight. I'm fairly certain my new tent would handle it, but I really just want air conditioning for one night. 🤣
Bonus: When I got to take a shower this evening, I remembered about the tick crawling on my face yesterday. I only found one tonight, attached on my ribs. I have a travel sewing kit with tweezers, so I took a chunk of flesh out to make sure I got its head. Either it hadn't been attached long or it wasn't in a juicy spot, because it didn't look like it had sucked anything out of me 🤣. And the skin isn't red or irritated at all, so I'm not worried about it. 👍
Sometimes it's good to stop.

Two More Capitol Buildings 💪
26 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F
I didn't get hardly any sleep last night. I went to bed dripping with sweat, then woke up about 2 hours later shivering and covered in dew. I put my shirt and leggings back on and went back to sleep for another hour or so, but was up before 0400 😞.
I was so tired that at noon I had to stop at a roadside rest area. I planned to take a 2-hour nap, but only 15 minutes after falling asleep, I woke to something crawling on my face. A tick. Ugh. I squashed him and thumped him away, but I started feeling like things were crawling all over me. It took some serious meditation to get back to sleep, but I was so tired that I did fairly quickly. Another hour of sleep and then I goofed on my phone until the two hours were up. I felt a lot better after that break. BTW, I sleep on top of the picnic table 🤣.
Got both Mississippi and Missouri capitols knocked out today, as well as completing Missouri in AULDR 👍. The only inter thing was a big doe and a tiny fawn almost ran out in front of me. The fawn was about half a stride in front of her, but when she stopped, so did it. In the right shoulder. I was downshifting and braking like crazy and saying "shit shit shit" 🤣. I guess she heard the bike because they both turned and darted back into the bushes before I got to them. Lucky me.
I'm camped at Outlaw HD again and on my way to Montana 🤞.

Service
25 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌙 77 °F
I spent most of today (0830-1730) at Lone Star HD in Tyler TX getting my 110,000-mile service. They also put on my new Dunlop tires, replaced my rear brake pads since the tire was already off, replaced my clutch plates (they were warped and it's been über difficult to find neutral), fixed the leaking shift shaft seal, and replaced my completely shot swing arm bearings. Michael is running tip top now, and I'm much happier with the rear suspension and an easy neutral.
Leaving there, I jumped on I-20 and tore out to Jackson MS where I'm camped at the local HD. I got a refresher course on my bike jack in the gravel parking lot when I was turning around and hit a deep spot that tipped me over. Man, am I glad I have that jack!!
I don't know how much sleep I'll get because it's over 80°F and humid AF 🥵. But I'm in my new tent for the first time and all the doors and windows are open with the netting closed. I'm sweating so much that I didn't bother pulling out any of my camping stuff, like the sleeping bag or air mattress. I need to move my inflatable pillow to somewhere more easily accessible though.

Home for a Breath
24 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F
I was up at 0400 again, and rolling out of Wichita by 0430. Looking at my weather apps, I thought I could beat the looming storm by streaming due south on I-35. I was mostly right, but I still hit a pretty bad one. The rain was hard and torrential, but it didn't last long, so I didn't get soaked 👍. The lightning was everywhere and I flinched every time it lit up the world around me 😳. Scary, but I got through it.
I made it to my little town just before noon. My first stop was to get my mail. By the time I got off my helmet and made it inside, the folks who run the mail service were already pulling out my stuff 🤣. A huge box with my new pop-up tent, a small Amazon box, and a stack of envelopes, mostly from Harley 🤣. I sorted it, strapped it to the bike, and rolled to eat lunch. Whataburger, of course 🤣.
After lunch, I made it to the barn. So nice to be home, even if it is for only one night.

Posse Ride Day 12: Rapid City to Mandan THE END
22 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F
My friend and I left Rapid City just before 0500 and beelined to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We did the South Entrance Badlands Loop and saw a ton of 🦬🦬🦬🦬, some with tiny calves. Luckily, we didn't have to deal with any moms and babies, just big bulls along the side of the road. What a great ride!!!
After that, we beelined to Mandan (Bismarck) for our final dinner and fellowship. It was great seeing everyone again and meeting new friends. I hope to see everyone again very soon!!

Posse Ride Day 11: Still in Rapid City
21 giugno, Stati Uniti ⋅ 🌧 61 °F
Today was a soggy mess, but I had to get my pics.
It was super foggy to start, but by the time I got down to Custer State Park, the fog and mist had cleared. On the Wildlife Loop I saw pronghorn antelope, lots of prairie dogs, the donkeys trying to sleep with tourist poking at them, and more 🦬. Cool.
Rain kicked in not long after, while I was on Iron Mountain Road, and it didn't really stop. I made all my stops, including the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is simply awesome, and the HDs in Hill City, Deadwood, and Sturgis.
Then I turned back to Rapid City to do laundry at a Laundromat I've been to on other trips. Still good 👍.
All clean, I headed back to the hotel. My friend and I walked about a mile to dinner, but Ubered back because of the misty rain. When we got back, one of our fellow Posse Riders told us there was a murder-suicide in the hotel today 😳. Our door is locked and we're going to sleep just fine 🤞.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️
