    Daintree Day 2.5

    HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, MOM!! LOVE YOU!!!

    Once the driver collected me from the Ferntree Lodge, we went back to the boardwalk. It was nicer with his guidance. Although I had already walked by everything, he was able to point out specifics. We even ate the abdomens of tiny lemon ants, which taste like, you guessed it, very sour lemons. Not bad.

    After that walk, we stopped at the Daintree Ice Cream Co. for a cup four flavors, Davidson's Plum, Yellow Sapota, Coconut, and something similar to hazelnut, all of which are grown on the farm. The gelato has no added sugar, and it was wonderful!

    Then it was back to my hotel in Port Douglas, where I stayed the rest of the night.

    This morning I walked to the grocery store, then right back to the hotel. I'm fighting sinus congestion and decided to stay in bed today, which is where I am now.

    Back in Cairns

    After yesterday's amazing trip to Wildlife Habitat, I spent the afternoon and evening back in the hotel wrapping up my Port Douglas trip and sorting out what was next.

    Next, apparently, is Cairns, which is where I've just arrived. I'm waiting to check into the hostel around 14:00. There is a huge tree in the middle of the bar. Cool.

    Maintenance Day & Aarrgghhh Continues

    Yesterday afternoon, I met up with my dear friend Sniffer Dog from Sydney, her friend, and a Cairns hasher Layback. They all dropped by the hostel on their way to the airport. Hugs for me!

    Then later I met up with McTaf, Mixo, and Layback at Hemingway's Brewery (there was one of these in Port Douglas as well, but I still haven't figured out if they have anything to do with Ernest). Then Layback and I went for Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, etc. dancing. He's about 55 years old and has been dancing since he was a kid. Needless to say, I watched a lot and danced a little. But what a great band and really good time.

    This morning, I chatted with my bank to get the FedEx tracking number for my corrected name debit card. I ordered it at 14:00 on Wednesday and my chat was at 09:00 on Friday, Australia time. They haven't sent it yet. It won't get picked up for another 23 hours. My new favorite curse phrase is "For Frick's [sic] Sake," a.k.a. FFS. These idiots. Luckily--I am really really trying to be positive about this--my friends in Townsville are going to let me stay with them for a few days while my card and glasses get sorted.

    After that chat, I had a nice feed (Aussie for "meal") before going to the shopping center for some much needed maintenance. First, I broke my newest glasses, so I had the local store contact a counterpart further south to order a new frame I can pick up in Townsville next week. Second, I went for a haircut to clean up the sides and back. And third, I finally had a pedicure, for which the whole world is grateful (I wear nothing but jandals/flip-flops/thongs/sandals...whatever you call those shoes with the thing between your toes).

    I'm at the mall now. No selfie today. I look the same as yesterday, including the clothes. 😉

    Lazy Day

    Yesterday afternoon, I continued reading my book, then went to dinner with McTaf, a friend of his, and Mixo. Afterwards, his friend went home and the three of us went to a nearby Irish pub. Kilkenny!!!! And a great band to boot. Great evening.

    Today, I'm just reading and playing games on my phone. Have to get up early in the morning. You'll find out why on tomorrow's post. 😀

    Hot Air Ballooning!

    All I did to finish up yesterday was have a very inexpensive and bland but filling dinner at the hostel and buy some groceries. Except...when I went to check out at the grocery store, I didn't have my wallet. Don't panic. I left my items with the young clerk and backtracked to the hostel. To get in the bar/pool/pokies area where I had dinner, I had to show i.d.*, but the guy let me in after I explained. No luck. Now panic is building. To reception. Several lost items had been turned in, including a couple of wallets which was reassuring to my dwindling faith in humanity, but not my wallet. One more place--my room. New key from the desk and a trot up to the second floor as I continued to push down the growing nausea. Not on my bed! Not on the floor! I am in serious panic mode now. Probably moaning out loud to my Irish roommates. Then, there it was! On the bench/table thing by the electrical sockets where I charge my phone. Whoosh! Key back to reception, friendly hoorah wave at the bar bouncer, and a jaunt back to the store, where I found my items waiting at the register. I. Am. So. Lucky.

    This morning, I was up at 03:30 for the hot air balloon operator to collect me. At just before 04:00, the hostel tweens were still partying, which is probably why the hostel locks up all the food pantries and refrigerators from 22:00-05:00. 😉

    We had just over an hour drive to the launch site. The ride was breathtaking! Kangaroos bolting out from under us while we were low. A hawk matching pace with us while we were high. We hit just over 2,300 feet at our highest, and we were airborne a bit longer than the scheduled 30 minutes. So peaceful, so quiet...except the very loud, very hot quadruple burners. The only downside was that I paid $80 AUD more than I thought I would and am fighting to get $50 of it back. But whatever. Still a terrific outing.

    I got back to the hotel around 09:30. Finished my book, took a shower, and am now packing to leave tomorrow.

    Hitchhiking to Mission Beach

    I met up with McTaf and Mixo last night for a short while. I'm so very glad I got to meet up with them while I was here.

    This morning, I met up with Dribbles, the Stray tour guide, who walked me and some others over to the train station to begin our southbound journey. I jumped off in Tully and walked about 800 meters (about 8 American football fields with end zones) to the outdoor bus terminal. But the bus to Mission Beach doesn't come until 18:00. I really don't want to sit here that long, so I chained my big bag and food bag to a bolted down metal bench and walked to a nearby backpacker hostel. No ride shares, but the very lovely lady gave me a sheet of bright yellow card stock and a heavy black marker. So, now I'm in the side of the road trying to hitch a lift to Mission Beach. Fingers crossed!

    After successfully hitchhiking to the Mission Beach YHA (Youth Hostel Association), I spent the rest of the day reading at the hostel.

    This morning, I caught the hostel shuttle to the bus stop and the Greyhound back to Tully. I'm at the Mt. Tully Hotel pub using their electrical sockets and having an inexpensive roast turkey sandwich with chips/french fries. Yummy.

    White Water Rafting & Wild Cassowary

    I was in Tully yesterday to meet some other travelers for an overnight outing in the Tully Gorge. The five of us, the Stray tour guide, and the activity guide/driver had a lovely afternoon visiting several water falls, then a lovely evening making dinner and hanging out by the fire. We went for a drive after dark and saw several musky rat kangaroos, a bandicoot, and 3-meter-long amethistine python! Wow!

    This morning after we packed up camp, we went to another waterfall for a swim. Another lovely location. The water was cool and very refreshing. Since we were already wet--why not when it hasn't stopped raining...it is the Wet Tropics after all--I went on my first white water rafting trip. I got much wetter.

    There were six people plus our expert in our raft. It was a fantastic time, but I don't think we did very well. I came out of the boat three times, but only the first one was by myself and alone.

    The first time the raft got stuck in rocks and we had to move into another boat. I slipped between them and splash! But I held on to the side rope and they pulled me back in. No problem.

    The second time the raft went up on its side against a massive rock. Three of us were on the bottom side and all three of us went in the water. It was probably a good thing though, because if we hadn't gone in, the raft probably would've flipped. I smashed my hand on an underwater rock taking off a bit of skin in my finger, but nothing to worry about. One girl had a big lump on top of her foot and lost her shoe.

    The third time, oh boy. I got caught in a swirl, tossed around in a washing machine cycle and not let up to the surface for what seemed like a very long time but was probably only about 10 seconds. I just kept kicking as hard as I could and the water finally released its grip. I popped up in the rapids sucking in as much air as I could, turning myself around so I was facing downstream, and glancing off more rocks. Then I had to swim for the boat. By the time they pulled me into the boat I was exhausted, and all of this was maybe two minutes. Maybe even less. It felt like forever. Scary.

    But it really was a great day. There were dozens of Ulysses butterflies around...one landed on me!...and even a couple of water dragons sunning themselves during a much welcomed break in the endless rain.

    On the drive back to Mission Beach, we saw a Cassowary on the roadside! Yay!! In the wild with a bus between me and it. A perfect end to a great couple of days in the Wet Tropics of North Queensland!

    Oh, at noon I was either on the river or in it, so the selfie is after we finished. And yes, I wore my glasses the whole time thanks to a strap. They did get bent when the girl in front of me smashed her helmet into my face, but overall they survived really well.

    Bye Bye, Favorite Shirt

    After yesterday's rafting adventure, I was wiped. I made dinner, read a little, and passed out. During the night I had a battle with a roommate over the air con temperature. Everytime I woke up sweating, I would turn it down. Every time she woke up freezing, I suppose, she turned it up. Four times I can remember. Grrrr.

    Today, I've made it to Mission Beach proper. (My hostel is actually in Wongaling Beach about 3.5 km south.) I needed a new singlet (Aussie for a tank top), and there aren't any tourist shops near my place. I also picked up some batteries for my toothbrush and a couple of charging cables. Mission accomplished around 11:00, so I'm now at the Pirate's Bay restaurant with my book and a cold beer. Sweet as.

    I miss my Vietnam shirt already; it's in the nearby rubbish bin crying out for me to come get it. No. Shut up. You're literally coming apart at the seams and have holes in you just from being worn and washed. It lasted since August, waaaay longer than I expected, and accompanied me in 10 countries. Sad day.

    Moving South

    I had such a great time yesterday! I met Liverpudlian Steve and Scotsman Jason at Pirate's Bay, then we went to TheScrubCo to watch a jam session. Drums, bass, harmonica, and four guitarists. I even jumped in on one song for the backup harmony. It was terrific!

    This morning, I packed, checked out, played with a neighbor's Staffordshire terrier--also named Steve, oddly enough--and am now on The Spirit of Queensland train to Townsville. It finally stopped raining and is a beautiful, sunny day. Life is very good today!

    Magnetic Island

    I got to Magnetic ("Maggie") Island yesterday. I had a nice meal of cheesy nachos, an enchilada, and a jug of sangria, then to bed early.

    This morning the plan was to walk the couple of hundred meters to the beach, get some breakfast, then take a really long walk on the island trails. Then it started pouring down rain, and it still is, so I'm still in bed watching YouTube videos. Maybe it will let up this afternoon.

    Maggie Island

    The rain let up yesterday afternoon, but not enough for me to take the trek I had planned. Instead, I went back to Horseshoe Bay Beach for a late lunch, then finished a book. Nice.

    This morning I had lovely breakfast with koalas and some other scaled, feathered, and furry friends:

    Now, I'm just hanging out at the hostel until my bus comes for the ferry back to Townsville.

    I got my new debit card yesterday, the bank's second attempt to send me a working card with the correct name. They're going to need a third chance to get it right. Aarrgghhh! Why is this so difficult?!?! Thankfully, I have very kind friends who are happy for me to stay with them as long as I need to get this all sorted out.

    I got back to Townsville yesterday, and Soak and his wife Bronwyn collected me at the ferry landing. Soak and I took Max to the beach for a quick walk, then popped in to say hello to Pam, a neighbor. Then back to the house where Soak and Bron made a lovely curry dinner paired with a gorgeous deep red wine. I'm very lucky to know these wonderful people.

    Now, I'm hanging out with Max and about to tear the front tires off of Soak's flatbed trailer so he can figure out how expensive the brake job will be. Not that he left the handbrake on or anything. 😉

    Ubering to SpecSavers

    My attempt to take the front wheels off the trailer began with 10 rusted lug nuts and ended with a broken socket wrench...and 10 rusted lug nuts. Now that I've found better tools and WD-40, I'll give it another go this afternoon.

    Now, I'm on my way to SpecSavers to get my glasses fixed. The Uber driver served 22 years in the infantry and is now retired. 🙂

    Lazy Day

    One mission accomplished: I got my glasses frame replaced...under warranty! Free!

    When I got back to the house, I took Max for a short walk, then I got the wheels off the trailer. I have no clue what to do with siezed drum brakes, so I'll leave that to Soak.

    Last evening a friend from Melbourne Tug stopped by for dinner, courtesy of Domino's, and drinks, courtesy of Stella Artois. What a lovely day.

    Today, I was up early to mess around with my cell phone provider because of my debit card issues. Huge thanks to Mom for waiting on the text message from them!

    Now, I'm watching 12 Monkeys, the original Bruce Wills/Brad Pitt movie. Wow! I forgot what an amazing performance Pitt gives as a complete lunatic in this!

    Monday's Hash & Today's Anniversary

    TODAY MARKS MY ONE YEAR OF TRAVELING! And I'm not done yet!! ♥️

    Soak, Romney, and I went to the Townsville Hash last night! Around 70 people there! Great fun...AND I found someone to go with to the Palm Creek Folk Festival Wed-Sun. Sweet as!!

    This morning I read another novel and am now going to pack for the weekend trip.

    Still no debit card. It's held up for clearance issues in Sydney. No clue and no delivery scheduled. Disappointing but not surprising. 😢😡
