Back to visit the nieces briefly between the ski season and leaving to go loca in latin America! Kindly put up by my brother and sister in law, and found out just how strong my little seven year old niece is- she managed to carry my fully packed backpack! Impressive. Obviously takes after her pack-horse Aunty Anna. All getting real now and I mostly can't sleep because I'm buzzing worse than a kid on Christmas morning. This will be the first time I've gone off anywhere without it being paid in advance and planned to a tee (by Ruth, obviously, I don't do planning. Or organisation. Or directions. I see no possible way in which this could possibly go wrong!).Read more

Barely slept at the Travelodge Heathrow (although did get a £2.50 Chicken biryani which was surprisingly good after literally following my nose into a curry place). 6am flight to Madrid then... RRRRIIIOOOOO!!!!! Zzzzzz. Nope, still too excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Read more

Change over, left a nice comfy British Airways plane for a vintage Iberia plane. When they'd finished winding it up it puttered all the way down the runway and didn't fall apart on take off, impressive! In flight entertainment courtesy of two large, flip down monitors in the middle aisle, totally retro. Fed me well though so there shall be no complaining.
Even better... after wondering as to whether we were supposed to pick up our own luggage in Madrid, it was actually waiting for us in Rio, backpacking IS easier with a backpack, after all. Off to a literal flying start!

LET THE (FUN AND) GAMES BEGIN!
Must admit that when we left the shuttle bus in the dark at the bottom of a sprawling Favela I was a little nervous that we would be killed before the adventure even really began. Fortunately we're still alive, woo!

We spent five days here instead of the booked three, because it was hard not to! Although our definition of 'hot water' differed somewhat from our host's, he went above and beyond in providing breakfast, lunch and dinner for us daily if we wanted it. Breakfast was just awesome. Toasted cheese sandwiches, and jet fuel instead of coffee. Proper Brasilian stuff... ooooh yes.
