A glimpse of what life was like for early miners in and around Broken Hill, we went to the Daydream Mine near Silverton.. You descend beneath the earth to walk the same tunnels that Cornish silver miners did in the 1880s. 3 levels of tunnels
These miners worked 12-hour days, six days a week, and all by the light of candles held in wall-gripping candleholders called ‘spiders’. The mines had a life of harsh conditions.
The tunnels are quite narrow and the ‘ceilings’ low.
Boys of 8 years carted Rocks out to the surface then back in for backfill.
