    Departure from Emerald Lake

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

For this trip, we took my converted GMC Savana. We packed a camping table, some chairs, and a gas stove. Since it’s just a weekend getaway, we kept it simple with vegetable soup and a few snacks for the road.

Being residents of Yoho National Park, we don’t need a permit for Banff National Park, which is a nice bonus!

Unfortunately, Jasper is closed because of the wildfires, so we’ll only be able to make it as far as the Columbia Icefields this time around.

  • Bow lake viewpoint

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Our second stop was at Bow Lake, another quick one as we were eager to keep moving. From the viewpoint, you get an amazing view of Crowfoot Glacier and the stunning turquoise waters of the lake. It’s one of those postcard-perfect spots that really showcases the beauty of the Rockies. Definitely worth a few moments to snap some photos and soak in the scenery before heading to the next adventure!Læs mere

  • Payto lake

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We stopped at Peyto Lake and hiked up to the busy lookout. Since it was so crowded, we decided to keep going and hike a little higher. The trail was consistently steep, but the view made it all worth it. In just a 30-minute walk, we reached a quiet, peaceful lookout with hardly anyone around.

The view from up there was absolutely breathtaking—an amazing perspective of the lake’s bright turquoise waters and the valley stretching out below. We took some extra time here, not only to soak in the beauty of the lake but also to stretch our legs a bit. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip!

  • Mistaya Canyon

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Mistaya Canyon was a completely unexpected gem. We knew about the beauty of the lakes and had planned to stop at each one we could see, but Mistaya Canyon caught us by surprise. It seemed like just a simple parking lot on the side of the road, so we decided to take a quick 15-minute walk.

What we found was incredible—we were standing above a rushing river flowing through a beautifully carved, sensual-shaped canyon. The natural rock formations and the power of the water made it one of the most mesmerizing spots we’d come across. It turned out to be my favourite stop of the entire trip!

  • Stop on the road

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

This was a completely random stop along the road to snap a picture of the wet pavement. I wasn’t expecting much, but the scene was surprisingly scenic. The shiny, wet road winding through the mountains, with the misty air and dramatic clouds, created a really moody and atmospheric vibe. It ended up being one of those spontaneous moments that captures the beauty of the drive itself.Læs mere

  • Big Bend outlook

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After a long drive from the last stop, we finally began to gain some serious elevation. This viewpoint offered a stunning look back over the valley we had just driven through. From here, we could see the incredible shapes of the surrounding mountains, with their dramatic peaks and rugged terrain. The view was a perfect reward for the climb, showcasing the beauty and scale of the landscape we had been exploring.Læs mere

  • Columbia Icefields

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

This was the most northern part of our trip. Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit Jasper or explore the rest of the icefields due to the Jasper fire. However, the Athabasca Glacier was absolutely stunning. We hiked up to the base of the glacier, where we were able to marvel at its sheer size and icy beauty up close. Despite the changes to our plans, this part of the journey was still a highlight.

It was incredible to see how much the glacier has shrunk over the last 100 years. The difference is striking and really highlights the impact of climate change. It’s a powerful reminder of the environmental changes happening around us.

  • Burnt forest

    15. august 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We’re now outside the national park. Towards the end of the first day, we encountered a vast area of burnt forest stretching for many kilometers through the valley. The scale of the devastation was striking and a sobering reminder of the recent wildfires. It was an intense sight that contrasted sharply with the natural beauty we had been enjoying.Læs mere

  • Camping spot

    15.–16. aug. 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We finally arrived at our camping spot for the night at Abraham Lake. It’s a beautiful location to settle in after a day of exploring. The lake’s serene waters and surrounding mountain views make it the perfect place to relax.

Just a note: there is a fee for the campground, and there’s no phone reception here, so it’s best to pay for the site upfront if possible.
