    We had a busy day today, starting with a boat tour of Apostle Island National Lakeshore (Part of National Park Service). There are 22 islands in the Apostle Island group, and no one knows how or why they got their name. The main attraction of the tour is Devil's Island, the furthest point North in Wisconsin, with a long coastal area of dramatic sandstone sea caves, arches, and passageways carved by waves over 1000s of years. The name is thought to come from indigenous people who heard thundering and booming from waves crashing in the caverns. We cruised past 10 other islands and saw old growth forests, 2 eagles, and a few lighthouses.

    In the afternoon, we explored a 1.8 mile loop trail at Frog Bay Tribal National Park. (It is the first tribal national park in the US, created to protect ancestral lands from private development). The trail wanders through a boreal forest of hemlock, cedar, maple and oak down to a sandy beach. It was a lovely final day in Wisconsin!    Read more
