• Day 161: Cousin Time in Hannover

    2024年6月19日, ドイツ ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Today we woke up early and quickly walked along the East Berlin Wall gallery mural where artists paint pictures on old sections of the wall. We had a train to catch because we would be meeting Mary’s cousin Katie and her husband Thomas in Hannover!

Katie and Thomas are both professors in the History/Philosophy of Science. Even though Thomas was from the Netherlands, they had been in the same research spaces and conferences for some time and decided to take a chance. They’ve been married since 2017 and split time between Michigan State University in East Lancing and Leibniz Universität in Hannover!

Thomas and Katie guided us through the town and university buildings and it was a really awesome experience to learn about the German education and University system. The college building was built as a royal palace for the Kingdom of Hannover until the German wars of reunification under Bismarck rendered it useless (no more Kingdom of Hannover). The coolest part is Thomas could take us in into special buildings including the horse stable library for engineering parents and a chemistry lecture hall from the 1800s!

We ended the evening with good drinks and schnitzel from their favorite local pub. We are so grateful for our tour guides and can’t wait to see more tomorrow!
