• Day 162: Hannover Old Town

    2024年6月20日, ドイツ ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

So grateful for the time Katie and Thomas were able to share with us this week; we met Katie at 10:30am to continue exploring downtown Hannover! Walked through the main shopping district and grabbed a coffee while overlooking the Anzeiger Hochhaus building. She also took us to their favorite outdoor/shoe stores so Kieran could look for replacement hiking shoes. Thomas joined us at the train station and continued to provide history on Hannover, the buildings, and the town.

Walked along the Hannover tourist red line which weaved around the city. The stops included the opera house and Aegidienkirche church which was bombed in the Second World War. We arrived at the town hall and got to go up into the tower and see the full city. There were many power plants surrounding the city and also public parks since Hannover is considered one of the most green cities in Germany.

Katie and Thomas guided us through the Hannover Old Town where a few traditional buildings remained. Reflecting again that 90% of Hannover was bombed in WWII and these few precious buildings remained or were recreated. We enjoyed tea and cakes while surrounded by the architecture.

After a short nap, ended the evening with a hearty meal and local beer as well as toured their apartment near the Heizkraftwerk Linden power station! The power station design is unique and Kieran caught them turning the lights on.

Once again, thank you Katie and Thomas for your hospitality and sharing your wonderful city with us! Can’t wait to come back for a Christmas Market!
