• Deception Island, South Shetland Islands

    The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which seriously damaged local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. It previously was a whaling station and is now a scientific outpost, with Argentine and Spanish research bases. It became a strategical base for the British during WWII.

    Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins are here, as well as Seals and a pair of Antarctic Terns. We hiked to the crater rim for some spectacular views.
