  • The Okavango Delta

    28 июля 2019 г., Ботсвана

We came across elephant and giraffes crossing the road while travelling to Kasane airport which is across the Botswana Zimbabwe border. Our sighting during our light aircraft flight to the Jao Concession of the Okavango Delta were hippos on the bank of the Chobe and a herd of buffalo on the move.

It was a short game drive then boat to Pelo Camp in time for lunch. In the late afternoon, we did a game/sundowner drive.

  • Pelo to Davidson's Camp

    31 июля 2019 г., Зимбабве

After breakfast, we left Pelo Camp and did a game drive to the airstrip. On the way we found another pride of lions looking for breakfast.

We then drove back across the border to Victoria Falls airport and a one hour flight to Davidson's Camp which has an adjacent waterhole that attracts many animals. Sunsets in Zimbabwe are also spectacular.Читать далее

  • Nehimba Lodge

    4 августа 2019 г., Зимбабве

Just as we were finishing breakfast, we had some early morning visitors to the camp waterhole - two lions and a lioness. Both lions were brothers and had been fighting over her - the winner was lame.

After watching them for a while, we headed out on our game drive.

In the afternoon Murray did a walk with our guide and they came across male elephants having a tussel. There was also a rare siting of a Pangolin.

  • Musango Safari Camp

    7 августа 2019 г., Зимбабве

We visited the local village in the morning and saw fishermen cleaning their fish before being dried on racks and then sorted for markets. The boat building was interesting using old roofing materials and branches for the frames. Some fishermen were mending their nets.

We also saw their cooking methods including the village bakery getting ready for a bake. Finally, there was a school visit, plus photos of a local church and a general store.

We did a sunset game cruise and got very close to a crocodile who was not very happy and saw hippos busy yawning.

  • Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch

    12 августа 2019 г., Намибия

We drove 270km south to Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch. Our room was in the desert - pool was too cold for this time of the year! We did a sunset drive and were lucky enough to see an aardvark - it is not only Autralia that has weird animals. Other sighting include giraffe, blue wildebeest, oryx and orstrich.

There was also quite a few sociable weaver nests where up to 300 weaver birds can live in one nest.

  • Bagatelle to Canyon Lodge

    13 августа 2019 г., Намибия

We visited Quiver Tree Forest on the way and found the scenery very similar to the Kimberley region.

The country around the lodge reminded us of Devil's Marbles in the Northern Territory. Our photos around the lodge are of the lodge's pool; gnarled tree in the grounds; rock hyrax who are supposedly the closet relative of elephants; visitors to our cottage and sunset views.Читать далее

  • Lüderitz

    16 августа 2019 г., Намибия

Whilst at Luderitz, we visited Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay.

Kolmanskop was built by the Germans to service the local diamond mine. It was abandoned in 1956 and is now a ghost town. The town was home to over 300 adults and 44 children. A few of the buildings have been restored but many are left exactly as they were deserted and now the surrounding dunes are gradually burying them.

Nearby, Elizabeth Bay is also a diamond rich area and was originally mined from 1911 to 1948 – some of the ruins of this mine still stand. It then reopened in about 1991, with a projected minimum lifespan of ten years and today is presently in mothballs waiting to be sold.

  • Sossusvlei

    19 августа 2019 г., Намибия

7:15am - Waiting for the park gates to open. We were number six in line hoping to get in before sunrise at 7:30am. Unfortunately, it did not happen - some chose to see it from the air.
The desert scenery driving into Sossusvlei is spectacular consisting of huge apricot coloured dunes with curving ridges. At Sossusvlei is Dead Vlei, which is old pans with dead acacia trees, some of which are 500 to 900 years old. We enjoyed our champagne breakfast under an acacia tree where we had a visit from a black-backed jackal. There is also the Big Daddy dune (300 metres tall) - we decided not to climb for exercise and instead climbed Dune 45 the next day which was tough going in the soft sand. The spectacular sand dune patterns continued driving out of Sossusvlei. Sesriem canyon is 30m deep in places, carved by the Tsauchab River. Early settlers used to draw water from it by knotting together six (called ses) lengths of hide rope (called riems). Hence it became know as ses riems. Our final photos are at Desert Homestead Lodge.Читать далее

  • Swakopmund

    21 августа 2019 г., Намибия

Between the Atlantic ocean and the Namib Desert, Swakopmund is another old German town.

During our visit we enjoyed a four wheel drive trip down to Sandwich Harbour seeing lots of flamingos and sand dunes. We also enjoyed a living desert tour looking for reptiles and other wildlife that live in the dunes.Читать далее

  • Mowani Mountain Camp

    23 августа 2019 г., Намибия

Mowani Mountain Camp is in the southern Damaraland region in the Twyfelfontein Conservancy. The camp is amongst massive ochre boulders on a high spot with fantastic views over the landscape.

In the afternoon we visited Burnt Mount, the Organ Pipes and Tweyfelfontein rock carvings, which are the largest collection of petroglyphs in Africa. On our way back to the camp we took a photo of how technology has reached the bush - at least the children are still outside playing! We enjoyed our sunset at the camp.Читать далее

  • Mowani Mountain Camp

    24 августа 2019 г., Намибия

Early the next morning we were taken on a camp drive to see the Desert Elephants who have adapted to the dry and sandy conditions by evolving into a smaller body mass and larger feet and longer legs to negotiate the difficult sandy and rocky terrain. They also have smaller tusks.

We enjoyed the rest of the afternoon relaxing on our verandah at the camp.

  • Grootberg Lodge

    25 августа 2019 г., Намибия

Once again it was beautiful scenery on our 110k drive to the lodge which is perched on the rim of the Etendeka Plateau looking over the Klip River Valley. 12 000 hectares have been set aside by the Khoadi/Hoas community for conservation and tourism.

In the afternoon, we relaxed on our verandah enjoying the view and wildlife. We also did the scenic/sundowner drive on top of the plateau, which is 26km wide. You wonder what these animals can find to eat.
