Lake Arenal

We are taking a shortcut to La Fortuna by way of lake Arenal. The lake is man-made and used to generate hydropower. Until 2012, it was the largest man-made lake in Costa Rica. As we cross, we normally see Arenal volcano, but today is rainy and foggy. The volcano is one of the youngest volcanoes, with the last eruption in 2010. Around 1968, the volcano erupted and destroyed surrounding communities. We will be sleeping in La Fortuna, name “the fortune” because it was an area spared by the eruption.Read more
