    On our way from Ostuni to Napoli, we stopped in Matera, the third oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Its highlight are the Sassi, neighbourhoods of cave homes carved into the limestone.

    Matera was one of the poorest places in Italy until the 1950s, with whole families living in these caves in very basic conditions.
    Today, many sassi have been restored into cafés, museums and small hotels. The city is surrounded by a landscape of beautiful canyons that make the whole area feel quite peaceful. Or is that the low season again?
