• Augrabies National Park day 2

    October 22 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

We were up at 7am and after breakfast we walked over to the shop for a look around. My back was still hurting and we’d been issues with a severe heat warning so hiking today was out of the question.
Monkeys came and invaded the campsite at 10:30am and I stood on guard with some small stones and the catapult. I only had to fire it twice as they got nearer testing our defences.
We were the only ones left in camp by 11am and Ellie took our washing over to the ablutions to clean it, then we decided to go for a swim in the pool and chill out in the sun loungers. It was the windiest place in the camp and after getting out of the cold water it was freezing but refreshing.
For the rest of the day the temperatures started to soar and by 4pm it was 35°c in the shade and just over 43°c in the sun. It really was roasting and the hot wind felt like an oven door opening but constant.,
At 4:30pm a few more campers started arriving and they seemed to all settle around us even though there were hundreds of free spots. Our closest neighbours walked over and introduced themselves.
At 5pm I lit the Braai and made handmade burgers and at 6:30pm the temperature was still 33°c in the shade.
We headed back over to the falls to watch the sunset from a different angle which was nice and then I went for another swim in the dark to cool off.
At 8pm it was still 30°c as we lay in bed watching the tv with our fans on the coldest it was going to get was 22°c and that was at 4am. It was going to be an uncomfortable night and at 10am I took another cold shower before we settled un for the night.
