Kgalagadi Twee Rivieren Day 2
26. oktober, Sør-Afrika
Today we were up at 5am and after a couple of coffees we drove to the security hut at 5:55am to pick up our driving permit and then we headed through into the Kalahari. We were 3rd in and at the first junction the first car drove straight on towards Botswana and Nossob camp and us and the car in front turned left to Mata Mata and Namibia.
Within 10 minutes we had our first big cat sighting of a male lion right next to the road. The car in front of us got to him first and hogged the whole sighting so we didn’t get great pictures.
We were pleased with that sighting and dropped back from the car in front to stop eating his dust as he sped up and 10 minutes later I spotted a leopard laying down in the grass 200 meters away. The car in front drove on and then we had this sighting to ourselves. The leopard stood up and started walking along the dunes and we managed quite a few pictures. Then it got to a tree and climbed up and just flopped on a branch and we got more great pictures all to ourselves before another few came.
We drove on and got to the junction for Mata Mata and the dune road and at the side of the road I spotted meerkats.
We turned right onto the dune road and it seemed quite sparse of all wildlife until 25km when we came across 2 cheetah on the ridge line of the sand dunes. They were too far away to get good pictures but it was still a good sighting.
At the end of the dune road we turned left heading to the picnic area and we stopped here to use the toilets before turning around and heading back to camp this time taking the Nossob road.
20 minutes along the road we spotted a female jackal hunting and watched as it caught and ate a ground squirrel. Then it caught another and started walking down the dry river bed. We followed and managed to track it all the way to its den where it had 5 cubs and it was an amazing sight and we were close enough to get good pictures. Then on the way back we spotted 2 male and 2 female ostriches herding 49 chicks across the dry river bed.
We finally got back to camp at 2pm where I had a quick shower and then opened my birthday cards and at 4pm we headed back out.
It is only a 30mph speed limit in the parks and I rarely even do that and driving slow we managed to get as far as the Jackal den before having to turn around.
We got back to camp at 6:45pm and handed our pass back in at the security hut. After that I lit the Braai and cooked a massive 1.2kg Wors for both of us for a birthday dinner. Because we got back so late by the time we finished eating it was 8:30pm and bedtime.Les mer
