Kgalagadi Twee Rivieren Day 3
October 27 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C
We were up at 5am this morning and were 3rd in the queue to get out the gate. The gate is crazy because someone has to get out of the car and physically slide it open. That’s fine on the outside but on the other side you could easily be the next meal do as we pull up to exit we always drive slow and check every bush and tree.
We decided we would drive the Nossob road today and the sun was in our eyes for alot of the way going in which was annoying. Obviously we were looking for big cats but anything rare would do.
40km in and we got to Kij kij water hole and hadn’t seen anything to note except birds. As we pulled past the watering hole there was a cut in to the left overlooking an old dry waterhole, we drove up into that and on the way out I saw what I thought were baby Jackal sitting by a small bush about 20 meters away.
I took the camera out and focused in and out popped mum from a hole in the ground and it was family of cape foxes. Super rare and we had the sighting all to ourselves. We sat there watching and got some great pictures until a few more cars pulled up and then the foxes went in for the day.
We continued going on passing the picnic site and scanning the area until we got to a water hole where there was a carcass of some animal. Here we stopped, had our rolls and fruit and then made our way back to camp stopping at Jackal den we found yesterday to get some more shots. Just before camp we found a tree with 5 baby owlets in.
We got back to camp at 11:30am and mooched around for abit photographing the mongoose in camp and then we popped over to the pool to cool off in the 35°c heat after that we popped to the shop and picked up some meat for tomorrows dinner.
At 5pm I lit a fire ready for dinner and by 6pm we were having Texan pork steak and vegetables. We cut the rind off and fed it to the mongoose and the loved it. Then we washed up and watched as everyone else lit there fires at 7pm. The campsite looked amazing with all the little fires. We were in bed watching TV by 7:30pm and by 9pm we were done with the day.Read more
