Berg En Dahl Day 3
25. november 2025, Sydafrika ⋅ 🌧 19 °C
It rained nearly all night and even though we didn’t have the storm tarp on, the waterproofing weather seal I painted on has done it’s job and it feels like a different tent not having to worry wether water is going to come in.
I got up at 5:30am and there was a water everywhere, rain had seeped down the side of the awning and the roof and soaked one of the chairs and the floor was soft and squidgy and felt like walking in gravy and it was still raining. I just wanted to go out but Ellie said it was pointless and we went back to bed for an hour. Then I twisted her arm in to going at 7am and we got 30 minutes out and it started raining heavens hard again so we went back and went back to bed.
Finally at 10am the rain stopped and blue sky started to appear. We jumped in the car and set off heading straight down the tar road and turning left and then right and onto gravel.
I engaged 4 wheel drive straight away and it was very slippery in places but ghost loved it. We saw impala, kudu and even a nyala but no leopards but as we passed James pan we encountered 3 rhino, a mum a dad and a baby. We stayed with them for about 20 minutes taking photos before moving on.
We spent the next 15 kilometres crawling along and driving through some very boggy areas spotting herd animals like zebra and impala and crossing over a beautiful dam. Then we turned left onto the s23 and back upto the h4 tar road where we turned left stopping at the large picnic area for a toilet break.
After the picnic area we encountered lots of elephants and some had babies which is always fun to watch and then as we rounded a corner there were 4 cars queued. I thought it was lions but as cars started moving away a guy stopped and said it was a leopard under a bush. I spun the car around so I was closest to the bush and another lady pointed it out. We couldn’t even see it at first. It was behind a ditch and then behind 2 bushes laying flat but if it moved or came out we were really close. I turned the engine off at 2:30pm. Every now and again it would pop its head up and at 4:30pm I could see Ellie was getting frustrated and I was the one with the camera. On my own I would have waited until the very last minute but it wasn’t fair to make Ellie wait aswell so at 4:45pm we went back home with little to show for our day out.
For dinner we cooked pork belly with mash and mushroom sauce which was really tasty, then it was time for bed and hopefully it would be dryer tomorrow.Læs mere
