Berg en Dahl Day 4
26. november 2025, Sydafrika ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C
I was up at 5am and made coffee and was then joined by a male bushbuck. As I was getting the milk out of the fridge I grabbed the rest of the cucumber and cut it into large chunks then I told Ellie I was feeding the bushbuck and she quickly got up.
Now Ellie was up we could have an early start and we left camp at 5:45am and drove exactly the same route as yesterday. I didn’t drive as slow today figuring if I was going to see a leopard I’d see it and if I didn’t I’d just come back again.
Just as we got to the bridge at James pan we encountered a male rhino sleeping in the dry river bed. There were a bunch of game vehicles infront of us and at the other side of the bridge at the pan the all did a U turn, we continued and 500 meters down the road we encountered another 3 rhino. A mum, a dad and a baby. Then another kilometre down the road we encountered another 3 rhino, yet another male, female and baby. 7 rhino in one day is absolutely incredible and although rhino are not the most photogenic of animals we feel very lucky to have seen so many of an endangered species.
We crossed over the beautiful dam and saw woodland kingfishers and drove upto the tar road and back to the picnic spot. It was packed with game vehicles and I couldn’t be bothered to stop except for a nature break. On the return journey we found baby warthog and they were the smallest we had ever seen. Proper pocket size.
Back at camp we had breakfast of pork sandwiches left over from last night and then went for a sleep. After napping we went swimming for an hour as it was getting hot and we spotted a huge rock monitor coming out of one of the drains and he climbed straight up the wall of one of the chalets and settled into the eaves then we decided to go and sit at the waterhole for the rest of the afternoon.
For most of the time at the waterhole it was just impala but a few elephants did pass by but none stopped so at 4:30pm we went back to camp.
Back in camp I lit a proper fire for a change rather than charcoal and then made burgers for dinner with fresh cheese topped rolls from the shop before heading in at 7:30pm.Læs mere
