    How do you drive 2500km?

    September 14, 2021 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We didn’t think this through… when we planned the trip to Norway we knew it would be far… but the sheer distance only hits us about a third in.
The first haul had a goal and a day of sightseeing to look forward, still the 12hrs dragged on forever…
We spent the first night at a marina in Copenhagen - the distinct smell of salty sea in the air, the „if you don’t like the weather, wait 15min“ making its first of many appearances to come.
On the morning‘s small dog walk I walked right through the 8am crowd of the „Vinderbadning“ club. I deduct that this must translate to „winter swimmers“. It’s not winter yet, but also not warm anymore. The Danish are tough - and skinny dipping seems to prevent having to deal with a wet bathing suit. Scandinavian practicality?
It does look like they invented the ice bath trend the rest of the world just caught on to. In the city there are more swimming spots - with automatic water quality displays and bathing attire. Most people cycle up, and change on the spot.

The city is one of the most beautiful I have seen. I don’t usually like cities - too loud, busy and smelly… but Copenhagen is charming. There is a big city run drawing thousands of participants of every age - some with walking aids.
Depending where you look you could use it as a backdrop for a medieval merchant movie scene (Nyhavn), a sailor or yacht attire ad shoot, a bike messenger reel or a look at modern architecture.
Only the little mermaid is underwhelming - the fountains and churches not mentioned are impressive.

We set off to Sweden for the night, hoping to get a leg up on the upcoming driving distance. But the reality hits us as we set the navigation the next morning after a big sleep-in: There is something terrifying entering your final destination and the total of 1999km lighting up, 21+hrs of driving away. We didn’t think this through. It broke my Google Maps app I think - at least it won’t start since…

The rolling hills of Denmark have long ago given way to miles of trees. The distinct pine smell fills the car as we soldier on. After 9hrs we find a rest stop at the lake. With the promise of coffee and cinnamon rolls I co-erie my better half to an early 6am start to knock some miles off…
The morning at the glass flat surface dipped in all the red and purple colors you can imagine does not disappoint… neither does the smell of freshly baked cinnamon that hits us as we step into the truck stop.
As I shift the gears into drive, the warmth of the cinnamon roll being handed to me makes it all worth it.
Let‘s get some miles under these wheels!
