Dunrobin Castle

📍 Dunrobin Castle – The French Chateau of the Highlands 🏰✨

Heading up the east coast of the NC500, Vanilla and I rolled into Golspie and straight towards one of the grandest sights in the Highlands: Dunrobin Castle. Rising above the trees with its turrets and spires, it doesn’t look like a typical Scottish fortress at all – more like a fairytale château that somehow got lost and washed up on the shores of the North Sea.

The approach alone is jaw-dropping. Driving through the grounds, you catch glimpses of those tall towers and manicured gardens, and then suddenly it opens up: a vision of French elegance perched above sweeping lawns that lead right down to the sea. It’s the ancestral home of the Dukes of Sutherland, and with 189 rooms, it’s one of the biggest houses in the Highlands. Vanilla looked positively tiny parked nearby.

Inside, it’s a mix of grandeur and history: wood-panelled rooms, portraits of stern ancestors, and staircases that make you feel like you’ve accidentally wandered into a period drama. Outside, though, the real magic happens. The gardens are a masterpiece – formal terraces inspired by the Palace of Versailles, complete with fountains, flower beds, and the sea stretching out beyond. I wandered through them with a coffee, half-expecting a duke or duchess to appear in full regalia.

And then there’s the falconry display. I stood watching as falcons, hawks, and even owls swooped across the lawns, wings slicing through the air with pinpoint precision. Against the backdrop of the castle, it was like stepping into another century.
