Scourie – A Highland Feast for the Soul (and Stomach)

Scourie greeted me and Vanilla with that rare Highland magic: a bay that seems to catch the evening sun just right, whitewashed houses strung like pearls around the shore, and the kind of calm that makes you forget the outside world exists. The roads here twist through lochs and hills, but the moment you roll into the village, everything slows down.

The campsite is perched perfectly above the bay — and it’s no ordinary stopover. There’s a Spar shop for all the essentials, a pub just steps away for a well-earned pint, and, the jewel in the crown, a fish and chip van that pulls up every evening between 5pm and 7:30pm. Tonight, I’ll be standing there with a grin, waiting for hot, salty chips and golden battered fish, the vinegar rising in the steam, the Atlantic breeze carrying it across the site. Dinner with this view feels like cheating the system — simple food elevated by an extraordinary setting.

Vanilla has the best seat in the house, lined up facing the bay. From inside I can see seabirds carving their lazy circles overhead and, out at sea, Handa Island keeping watch with its cliffs and puffin colonies. It’s the kind of place that tempts you to put down roots for a few days, not just pass through.

Scourie isn’t just another waypoint on the NC500. It’s a little pause button, a place where every detail lines up: a pint in hand, fresh fish and chips, the sea glittering in front of you, and the quiet hum of a Highland evening. For me and Vanilla, it’s a feast for the senses — part adventure, part comfort, and entirely unforgettable.
