Ardvreck Castle

📍 Ardvreck Castle, Loch Assynt, NC500 – 27th September 2025
The ruins of Ardvreck Castle stand brooding on the shores of Loch Assynt, like a stubborn ghost from the 16th century that refuses to let go. Built by the MacLeods of Assynt, it has seen betrayal, siege, and storm – and now sits in pieces, battered by the Scottish weather but still strangely proud.
Walking up to it, the wind whistled off the loch, and I could almost hear the echo of clan battles and whispered plots. Legend even has it that the castle is haunted by the Weeping Woman of Assynt – the ghost of a noblewoman who met a watery end. She must have been in hiding today though, because all I saw were dramatic skies, grey water, and a ruin that looked straight out of a fantasy film set.
Vanilla was parked just up the road, looking cosy against the dramatic backdrop, while I took my time wandering around. Rain showers came and went, the light shifting every few minutes – perfect conditions for drone shots and moody photos.
There’s something deeply atmospheric about Ardvreck. It’s not polished or restored – just raw stone and raw history, left to the elements. Exactly how a Highland ruin should be.
