Kylesku Bridge

The NC500 is packed with jaw-dropping scenery, but some places make you stop, step back, and mutter “wow.” The Kylesku Bridge is one of those moments.

This sweeping concrete curve leaps across Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin, linking together the wild landscapes of north-west Sutherland. Before the bridge opened in 1984, travellers had to queue for a ferry here. Now, it feels like the road itself takes flight — a ribbon of tarmac floating over blue water, framed by rugged mountains and endless sky.

I pulled over at the viewpoint and just stood there, watching the light play on the water and imagining how remote this spot must have felt before the bridge arrived. A couple of drone shots later (and a quiet “wow” again), I climbed back into Vanilla and rolled across, feeling like I was part of a car advert.

It’s more than just a crossing. It’s one of those NC500 highlights where engineering meets wilderness, and both seem to respect each other.Read more
