Rolling down from Inverness, Vanilla and I made our way to one of Scotland’s most famous waters – Loch Ness. The road hugs the loch, and the sheer size of it catches you by surprise. It’s not just a lake; it’s a long, brooding stretch of water that seems to hold its own secrets under the ripples.
I parked up and walked down to the edge – the air was still, and the surface of the water looked like black glass. It’s no wonder the place has inspired so many stories about Nessie. Standing there, you can’t help but scan the waves, just in case something stirs beneath.
Along the shoreline, small villages break up the wilderness, each with their own charm. Drumnadrochit is full of Nessie souvenirs, from cuddly green monsters to mugs that make the creature look more cartoon than cryptid. But step away from the shops and back down to the loch, and it’s the timeless Highland landscape that really steals the show.
The hills rise steeply on either side, the forests cling to their slopes, and every now and then a castle ruin juts out – most famously Urquhart Castle, clinging to a promontory and watching over the loch like it’s waiting for the monster to appear.
That night, I sat with a coffee in Vanilla, watching the sun dip low and turn the surface of the loch to liquid gold. No sign of Nessie – unless she was having the night off – but the atmosphere alone was worth the stop.
