    Dunkirk, 1940

Standing on Dunkirk beach today, it’s hard to believe that 86 years ago tomorrow this peaceful shoreline was at the centre of one of the most dramatic events of the Second World War.

On 4 June 1940, Operation Dynamo came to an end after nine days of continuous evacuations. More than 338,000 British, French and Allied troops had been rescued from these beaches and the harbour by a remarkable fleet of naval vessels, merchant ships and the famous “Little Ships”.

Today there is only the sound of the waves and seabirds. Eighty-six years ago, there were explosions, smoke, burning ships and thousands of soldiers hoping to make it home.

A quiet beach now, but one that played a huge part in shaping history. 🇬🇧🇫🇷🌊 #Dunkirk #OperationDynamo #FindPenguins
