Every road trip has its grand moments. The dramatic coastlines. The historic towns. The perfect sunset photographs.
And then there are the less glamorous moments that quietly make the whole adventure possible.
Today was one of those moments.
Before heading for Le Shuttle and the journey back to England, I pulled Vanilla into a French fuel station for one final refill. The pump clicked off at 44.29 litres, costing €89.24.
At today’s exchange rate, that’s about £75.90, working out at roughly £1.71 per litre. Considering I’ve recently seen diesel at around £1.76 per litre back home, it turns out this French fuel stop was actually slightly cheaper than filling up in the UK.
Not a fortune saved, but enough to make me smile.
For Vanilla, those 44 litres represent around 340 miles (550 km) of range. More than enough to get me comfortably home to Stafford with fuel left in the tank.
Looking at the display showing €89.24 and 44.29 litres, it struck me that every adventure eventually comes down to simple things: fuel in the tank, memories in your head, and photographs on your phone.
The beaches of De Panne, the streets of Bruges, the French coastline and all the little discoveries along the way are now behind me.
