NIX EUROPEAN DRIFT 2026
Thirty Days. Twelve Countries. One Campervan. One Extraordinary Adventure.
There are moments in life when you realise the clock is ticking.
Not in a gloomy way.
Not in a “time is running out” sort of way.
More in a “there is still so much of this wonderful world left to see” sort of way.
That moment arrived for me on the morning of 6th May 2026.
I climbed into Vanilla, my beloved VW T6.1 campervan, outside my home in Milford, Staffordshire.
The kettle was packed.
The fridge was stocked.
The drone batteries were charged.
The sat-nav was loaded.
And somewhere beyond the Channel Tunnel lay thirty days of freedom.
The plan was simple.
Head for Europe.
Keep driving.
See what happens.
What followed would take me through twelve countries, across some of the most spectacular scenery on the continent, into medieval cities, along stunning coastlines, over mountain passes, through historic battlefields and eventually to the birthplace of the very vehicle carrying me there.
This was not a holiday.
This was an expedition.
This was the NIX European Drift.
⸻
Day One – Escape Velocity
Leaving Staffordshire always brings a strange mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation.
The familiar landmarks disappear.
The roads become less familiar.
The possibilities become endless.
By lunchtime I was heading towards Folkestone.
By afternoon I was aboard Le Shuttle.
And by evening I was in France.
Just like that.
The beauty of the Channel Tunnel never gets old.
One minute you’re in Kent.
Thirty-five minutes later you’re in another country.
The adventure begins instantly.
The first overnight stop was Belfort.
A practical stop rather than a glamorous one.
But it marked an important milestone.
Vanilla had officially arrived in Europe.
The adventure had begun.
⸻
Switzerland – Where Reality Starts Looking Fake
The following day the landscape began to change dramatically.
Rolling French countryside gradually transformed into towering mountains.
Roads became steeper.
Valleys became deeper.
And then, quite suddenly, Switzerland appeared.
Not just Switzerland.
Lauterbrunnen.
One of the most astonishing places I have ever seen.
Photographs don’t prepare you.
Videos don’t prepare you.
Nothing prepares you.
Waterfalls plunge hundreds of feet from vertical cliffs.
Snow-covered mountains dominate the skyline.
Tiny wooden chalets sit beneath gigantic peaks.
It looks like someone gave a Hollywood film set designer an unlimited budget and told them to create the perfect Alpine valley.
For two glorious days I wandered around smiling like a man who had just won the lottery.
Everywhere I looked was another photograph.
Another drone shot.
Another memory.
⸻
Over the Roof of Europe
Leaving Lauterbrunnen, Vanilla began climbing.
And climbing.
And climbing.
The route towards St Moritz delivered some of the finest driving roads I have ever experienced.
Hairpin bends.
Mountain passes.
Snow banks.
Panoramic views stretching for miles.
This wasn’t simply travelling.
This was driving as an event.
Every bend revealed another breathtaking view.
Every summit felt like a small victory.
Eventually the road began descending towards Italy.
And then Lake Como appeared.
What a sight.
Mountains tumbling into shimmering water.
Elegant villas.
Beautiful lakeside towns.
Italy had arrived in style.
⸻
Tuscany – Living Inside a Postcard
The next chapter took me deep into Tuscany.
Lucca was magnificent.
Ancient walls surrounded narrow streets filled with life.
Every café looked inviting.
Every square looked historic.
Every corner looked photographable.
Then came Pisa.
The Leaning Tower is one of those landmarks that everyone knows.
Yet seeing it in person somehow still feels surprising.
You stand there staring upwards thinking:
“That really shouldn’t still be standing.”
From Pisa I continued to Siena.
If Lucca was beautiful, Siena was breathtaking.
This was medieval Italy at its absolute finest.
Walking through Siena felt like wandering through history itself.
⸻
Venice and the Adriatic Beckon
A stop in Bologna delivered wonderful food, wonderful architecture and wonderful atmosphere.
Then came Venice.
A city unlike anywhere else on Earth.
You don’t really visit Venice.
You drift through it.
You get lost.
Then get lost again.
Then somehow find exactly what you were looking for.
From Venice the journey continued to Trieste.
The eastern edge of Italy.
The gateway to the Adriatic.
Ahead lay Croatia.
And some of the most spectacular coastline in Europe.
⸻
Croatia – The Adventure Explodes Into Life
The Adriatic coast exceeded every expectation.
Lovran.
Zadar.
Split.
Each destination seemed more beautiful than the last.
The roads wound beside crystal-clear seas.
Ancient towns clung to rocky coastlines.
Every evening delivered another spectacular sunset.
And then came Dubrovnik.
The jewel of the Adriatic.
Standing atop the ancient city walls, looking out across the sparkling sea, I experienced one of those rare travel moments where everything aligns perfectly.
The weather.
The view.
The atmosphere.
The sense of being exactly where you are supposed to be.
It was unforgettable.
⸻
Bosnia, Plitvice and One of Europe’s Greatest Wonders
The brief crossing through Bosnia and Herzegovina added another country to the growing list.
Then came Plitvice.
And quite frankly, Plitvice is nature showing off.
Turquoise lakes.
Waterfalls everywhere.
Forests.
Boardwalks.
Colours that barely seem believable.
Even after Switzerland, Plitvice still managed to leave me speechless.
That takes some doing.
⸻
Slovenia – The Fairytale Continues
Lake Bled looked exactly like the postcards.
In fact, it looked better.
The island church.
The castle.
The mountains.
The reflections.
It felt almost too perfect.
If somebody designed a dream Alpine lake, this would be the result.
⸻
Austria, Bavaria and an Unexpected Czech Adventure
From Zell am See, the route carried me north into Bavaria.
Munich impressed immediately.
Confident.
Historic.
Beautiful.
A city that somehow feels both ancient and modern at exactly the same time.
From Munich I made a fascinating detour into the Czech Republic.
Cheb wasn’t one of the famous destinations on the trip.
Yet it became one of the most memorable.
Those are often the best stops.
The ones you don’t expect.
The ones that surprise you.
The ones that become stories.
⸻
Vanilla Comes Home
Then came Wolfsburg.
For most travellers it is simply another German city.
For me it felt like something else entirely.
This was the birthplace of Volkswagen.
The spiritual home of the very brand carrying me across Europe.
After thousands of miles, countless mountain passes and eleven countries, Vanilla had finally arrived where her story began.
It felt oddly emotional.
Like introducing an old friend to their ancestors.
A visit to Volkswagen’s Hannover operation completed the pilgrimage.
Mission accomplished.
⸻
The Netherlands – Football, Friendship and Community
Deventer turned out to be one of the surprises of the entire journey.
A beautiful Dutch city.
Relaxed.
Friendly.
Full of character.
But the highlight wasn’t the canals.
Or the architecture.
It was a football stadium.
The home of Go Ahead Eagles.
De Adelaarshorst.
As an Aston Villa supporter, there was something wonderfully familiar about it.
A proper football ground.
Built into the community.
Floodlights rising above residential streets.
History dripping from every corner.
It wasn’t flashy.
It wasn’t modern.
It was simply authentic.
The sort of football ground that reminds you why people fall in love with the game in the first place.
Thousands of miles from Villa Park, I found myself smiling at the fact that football can make you feel at home almost anywhere.
⸻
Bruges, Dunkirk and the Road Home
Bruges felt like stepping into a medieval painting.
Then came De Panne.
The North Sea.
Dunkirk.
Standing on those quiet beaches was deeply moving.
History hangs heavily over that coastline.
Eighty-six years earlier, the fate of hundreds of thousands of men had unfolded there.
Today it was peaceful.
Silent.
Reflective.
A fitting place to pause before the final journey home.
One last evening at Cité Europe.
One last continental coffee.
One last sleep.
Then Le Shuttle.
England.
Staffordshire.
Milford.
Home.
⸻
The End… Or Perhaps Just the Beginning
On 4th June 2026, Vanilla rolled back onto my driveway.
The same driveway I had left thirty days earlier.
Yet somehow everything felt different.
Because travel changes you.
Not dramatically.
Not overnight.
But quietly.
It reminds you how large the world really is.
How many stories are waiting to be discovered.
How many roads remain unexplored.
The NIX European Drift wasn’t about ticking countries off a list.
It wasn’t about mileage.
It wasn’t even about destinations.
It was about freedom.
Curiosity.
Adventure.
And the simple joy of waking up each morning wondering what lay beyond the next bend in the road.
Twelve countries.
Thirty days.
One campervan.
A lifetime of memories.
And a growing suspicion that this won’t be the last great adventure Vanilla and I share together.Read more
