    🚐🇪🇺 NIX EUROPEAN DRIFT – THE FINAL RUN 🇪🇺🚐

    It’s hard to believe that after nearly a month on the road, the final chapter of this adventure is now in sight.

    Ahead lies one last great sweep across Europe:

    🇨🇿 Cheb (Czech Republic)
    🇩🇪 Wolfsburg (Germany)
    🇳🇱 Eindhoven (Netherlands)
    🇧🇪 Bruges (Belgium)
    🇫🇷 Calais (France)
    🇬🇧 Stafford (United Kingdom)

    Today, Vanilla and I head for Cheb, adding one final new country to the map and one more Find Penguins badge to the collection. Another border crossed. Another chapter written. Another memory bank deposit.

    Then comes Wolfsburg.

    For most people it’s simply the home of Volkswagen.

    For me, it’s something far more personal.

    My second car was a little red VW Polo when I was nineteen. I even spray-painted the wheel trims red because apparently standard wasn’t exciting enough. Since then I’ve owned four VW GTDs, and now I’m travelling Europe in Vanilla, my beloved VW campervan.

    Visiting Wolfsburg feels less like sightseeing and more like a pilgrimage.

    After that, the road turns west towards Eindhoven, then on to beautiful Bruges, where I hope to slow the pace, wander the canals, enjoy a few Belgian beers and reflect on everything this trip has been.

    Then comes Calais.

    The final campsite.

    The final European sunset.

    The final night before the Channel Tunnel carries Vanilla and me back towards Stafford.

    By then I’ll have crossed mountains, lakes, coastlines, vineyards, old cities, tunnels and borders. I’ve watched sunrises in the Alps, wandered through medieval towns, driven some of Europe’s greatest roads and visited places that were once only names on a map.

    Soon those places will sit in the rear-view mirror.

    But not quite yet.

    There are still a few miles to drive.

    A few beers to sample.

    A few photographs to take.

    And a few memories still waiting to be made.

    The road home has begun.

    But the adventure isn’t over yet.

    🇨🇿🚐 NIX EUROPEAN DRIFT – CHEB, CZECH REPUBLIC 🚐🇨🇿

    Today another country joined the map.

    After nearly a month wandering across Europe, Vanilla and I rolled into the Czech Republic and settled onto Pitch 93 at a campsite near Cheb.

    It’s funny how the little things become memorable on a trip like this. A new flag on the Find Penguins map. A different language at reception. A handful of Czech Koruna changing hands. Another chapter added to the story.

    The economics made me smile too.

    A full night on a campsite with electric hook-up, my own pitch, facilities and tourist tax came to just 470 CZK – about £16. Not much more than the price of a couple of drinks back home, yet enough to buy a peaceful night in another country.

    Earlier in the day, Vanilla enjoyed one of the cheapest fuel stops of the whole adventure. Czech diesel worked out at roughly £1.34 per litre, making it feel like Europe was giving us a little reward for venturing off the usual tourist trail.

    As darkness falls over Pitch 93, the fridge is humming, the batteries are charging, and tomorrow the compass swings west once again.

    Next stop: Wolfsburg, Germany.

    For most people, it’s simply the home of Volkswagen.

    For me, it’s a pilgrimage.

    From the little red Polo I owned at nineteen (complete with red spray-painted wheel trims) to the four GTDs that followed, and now Vanilla herself, Volkswagen has quietly been part of my story for decades.

    Tonight, though, is about enjoying the moment.

    One more country.
    One more memory.
    One more stamp on the map.

    The road home is getting closer, but the adventure isn’t finished yet.

    You can keep your Michelin stars.

    Today I experienced something arguably more important to automotive history.

    The legendary Volkswagen Currywurst.

    Served right here at Autostadt in Wolfsburg, this isn’t just a sausage. It’s basically an official VW component with its own part number. In true German fashion, Volkswagen has been making these things since 1973 and somehow sells millions every year. In some years they’ve practically been competing with their own car sales.     Sat inside the Tachometer restaurant, surrounded by the spiritual home of Volkswagen, with a plate of currywurst, fries and that famous VW ketchup, it felt less like lunch and more like a mechanical inspection of German culture. (Autostadt)

    The sausage arrives, covered in rich curry sauce and carrying enough industrial heritage to power an entire production line.

    Honestly?

    For a lifelong VW enthusiast who once owned a little red Polo, four GTDs, and is currently touring Europe in Vanilla, this felt like a proper pilgrimage moment.

    Some people come to Wolfsburg for the cars.

    Others come for the architecture.

    I apparently travelled across Europe to eat a factory sausage.

    And I regret absolutely nothing.

    🌻⚡🇩🇪 NIX EUROPEAN DRIFT – THE ROBOT SUNFLOWER 🇩🇪⚡🌻

    Today at Volkswagen Autostadt in Wolfsburg I stumbled across something that perfectly sums up German engineering.

    A giant solar-powered flower.

    Not a flower-shaped sculpture.

    Not a decorative flower.

    An actual robotic solar flower that spends all day following the sun across the sky, opens itself in the morning, closes itself at night, and folds itself away when the weather turns nasty.

    Because apparently a normal solar panel wasn’t complicated enough.

    The Smartflower produces up to 6,500 kWh of electricity per year and generates more power than conventional fixed solar panels because it constantly tracks the sun throughout the day.

    As a campervan owner, I immediately started looking at it and wondering whether I could somehow fit one to Vanilla.

    The answer is probably no.

    For starters, it weighs around 800kg and has a wingspan of nearly 5 metres when fully open. Parking at Tesco would become challenging.

    Still, standing there watching it, I couldn’t help but admire the thinking behind it. While most of us simply bolt a solar panel to a roof and hope for sunshine, the Germans built a giant robotic sunflower that actually chases the sun around the sky.

    It’s gloriously over-engineered.

    And I absolutely love it.

    One of the joys of travelling is discovering things you never knew existed. You set off expecting Volkswagens and factories and end up fascinated by a giant mechanical flower generating electricity in the middle of a park.

    Only in Germany.

    🌼 A Tunnel of Flowers in Volkswagen Land 🇩🇪

    When most people think of Volkswagen, they think of Golfs, GTIs, Transporters and enormous factory buildings.

    What they probably don’t think of is walking through a giant rotating tunnel covered in thousands of bright yellow flowers.

    Yet here I am.

    Deep inside Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen’s sprawling automotive theme park, I stumbled across one of the most unexpected sights of the entire trip. A circular steel tunnel stretching over the water, completely lined with flower pots bursting with colour.

    At first glance it looks like something from a science-fiction film. Then you realise it’s actually a bridge. Then you realise it’s moving.

    The whole structure slowly rotates as visitors walk through it, creating a strange sensation that you’re travelling through a giant floral wheel. It’s called the Dufttunnel, or “Scent Tunnel”, and it perfectly sums up what makes Autostadt so fascinating.

    This place isn’t just about cars.

    It’s about design.

    It’s about engineering.

    It’s about making people stop and smile.

    Standing in the centre of the tunnel, looking through the perfect circular frame towards the gardens beyond, I found myself thinking how wonderfully German it all is. Someone, somewhere, sat down and decided that what Volkswagen’s visitor attraction really needed was a giant rotating flower tunnel over a lake.

    And somehow they were absolutely right.

    The contrast is brilliant. One minute you’re looking at automated systems capable of moving hundreds of brand-new cars into giant glass towers. The next you’re surrounded by thousands of flowers gently swaying in the breeze.

    Engineering and nature working together.

    As the sunlight poured through the yellow blooms and reflected off the water below, it became one of those unexpected moments that make travelling so rewarding. The things you never planned often become the memories you keep.

    I’ve come to Wolfsburg on what can only be described as a pilgrimage to the home of Volkswagen. I expected factories, history and engineering.

    I didn’t expect a giant flower-covered portal to another dimension.

    But that’s exactly what I found.

    And honestly?

    I loved it.

    🏭🚗 VW’s Twin Car Towers – The World’s Most Impressive Car Vending Machine 🚗🏭

    Today I finally stood beneath the famous twin car towers at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany.

    At 48 metres high, these two glass giants dominate the skyline and serve a very practical purpose. Each tower can store around 400 brand-new Volkswagens, meaning there are roughly 800 cars waiting inside the towers at any one time.

    What really impressed me was the efficiency of the whole system. From the moment a vehicle leaves the end of the production line, it takes just eight minutes for it to be automatically transported and parked inside one of the towers. No drivers. No fuss. Just a highly sophisticated robotic system quietly doing its job with typical German precision.

    Inside the towers, robotic lifts move cars vertically and horizontally, placing each vehicle into its storage bay with millimetre accuracy. Watching the system work is like seeing a giant mechanical ballet performed by computers and steel.

    As a lifelong Volkswagen fan, standing here felt a bit like visiting a sacred place. Millions of people see Volkswagens every day, but very few get to see where the story begins.

    The towers are more than storage buildings. They are a symbol of engineering excellence, efficiency and innovation. Even now they still look like something from the future.

    Some people travel across Europe to visit famous landmarks.

    I drove over 3,000 miles to stand in front of two giant glass towers full of Volkswagens.

    And do you know what?

    It was absolutely worth it. 🇩🇪🚐

    THE WORLD IN MY EYES

    There are moments in life when a song stops being a song.

    It becomes a memory.

    A place.

    A feeling.

    A chapter of your life.

    And for me, that song is World In My Eyes by Depeche Mode. 🎵🌍

    As I sit here in Vanilla, somewhere between the adventure and the journey home, I find myself feeling something I didn’t expect.

    Gratitude.

    Pure, overwhelming gratitude. ❤️

    A few weeks ago I left Stafford with a campervan, a rough plan, a head full of dreams and enough gadgets to make Tomorrow’s World proud. 😆📱📸🚁

    What happened next was beyond anything I imagined.

    🇫🇷 France welcomed me with endless roads and the excitement of finally being on my way.

    🇨🇭 Switzerland left me speechless beneath mountains so enormous they genuinely looked like they touched the sky.

    🇮🇹 Italy gave me sunshine, history, beautiful roads and memories that will stay with me forever.

    🇭🇷 Croatia delivered turquoise seas, stunning coastlines and some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen.

    🇧🇦 Bosnia surprised me, touched me and reminded me that the world is full of good people.

    🇩🇪 Germany gave me Wolfsburg — a pilgrimage for a lifelong Volkswagen enthusiast and a place that felt strangely emotional to visit.

    And through it all there was one song.

    🎵 “Let me take you on a trip…”

    Oh, it certainly did.

    The more I listen to the lyrics, the more I realise they describe exactly what happened.

    🏔️ “The mountains in the sky”

    I stood beneath them.

    Not in a photograph.

    Not on YouTube.

    Not in somebody else’s travel blog.

    I stood there.

    Me.

    A lad from Stafford.

    Looking up at Alpine peaks disappearing into the clouds.

    🌊 “All the islands in the ocean”

    For me, those islands weren’t surrounded by water.

    They were the places I’d always wanted to visit.

    The places I kept saying “one day” about.

    One day became today.

    And suddenly those distant dreams became real memories.

    ✨ “All the pleasures, little treasures”

    What a perfect description of campervan life.

    A quiet campsite.

    A spectacular sunset.

    A mountain road.

    A perfect photograph.

    A friendly stranger.

    A cold beer after a long drive.

    Tiny treasures.

    Tiny moments.

    Yet somehow they became the biggest memories of all.

    ❤️ “Nothing more than you can feel now”

    And perhaps this is the lyric that hits hardest.

    Because this trip was never really about the destinations.

    It was about the feelings.

    Freedom.

    Wonder.

    Excitement.

    Curiosity.

    Happiness.

    The simple joy of waking up every morning and wondering what was over the next hill.

    Some people might think travelling alone sounds lonely.

    It wasn’t.

    Not for a second.

    Every road became a companion.

    Every town told a story.

    Every campsite had its characters.

    And somehow, somewhere along the way, I rediscovered something I’d almost forgotten.

    Adventure.

    Not the kind you see in films.

    Real adventure.

    The kind that begins when you stop saying “one day” and start saying “why not?”

    This journey has reminded me that life isn’t measured in possessions.

    It’s measured in moments.

    In stories.

    In memories.

    In sunsets.

    In friendships.

    In laughter.

    In curiosity.

    And in the courage to turn the key and go.

    As the miles slowly tick down and home starts appearing on the horizon, I find myself smiling.

    Not because the trip is ending.

    But because I know it isn’t.

    The road has changed me.

    The world has become bigger.

    And my curiosity has become stronger than ever.

    🚴‍♂️ Another adventure is already forming.

    🗺️ Another route is already appearing on a map somewhere.

    🚐 Vanilla is already wondering where we’re going next.

    And every time I hear World In My Eyes for the rest of my life, I won’t hear a song.

    I’ll hear France.

    I’ll hear Switzerland.

    I’ll hear Italy.

    I’ll hear Croatia.

    I’ll hear Bosnia.

    I’ll hear Germany.

    I’ll hear the sound of tyres rolling towards another horizon.

    I’ll hear freedom.

    I’ll hear joy.

    I’ll hear the greatest adventure I’ve ever had.

    For one glorious month, the world really was in my eyes.

    And what a beautiful world it turned out to be.

    While wandering near Hannover, I stumbled across steam locomotive 038 711-8, built in 1922 and now resting peacefully after more than half a century of service. Once hauling passenger trains across Germany, this old Prussian P8 now stands as a monument to a different age of travel. Looking at the huge driving wheels and riveted boiler, it’s hard not to imagine the clouds of steam, the smell of coal, and the sound of a whistle echoing across the German countryside.     🇩🇪🚐 HOME OF VANILLA 🇩🇪🚐

    Today I made a bit of a pilgrimage.

    Behind me is the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles factory in Hannover – the birthplace of millions of VW Transporters and Bullis since 1956. More than 10 million vehicles have rolled out of these gates over the years, including the T6.1 generation that gave the world my campervan, Vanilla. (vwpress.co.uk)

    Standing here feels a little different when you own one of them. This isn’t just another factory; it’s where a collection of steel, wires, bolts and German engineering first came together before beginning a life of adventures across Europe.

    Somewhere on this vast site, workers built the van that would eventually carry me through mountain passes, along coast roads, across borders and into places I had only ever dreamed of visiting. The factory covers an area roughly the size of 150 football pitches and remains the heart of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. (volkswagen.de)

    For most visitors it’s just a factory.

    For me, it’s Vanilla’s birthplace.

    📍 Somewhere between Volkswagen dreams and Belgian beer

    At first glance £84 sounds painful, but when you remember Vanilla will happily turn that into around 420 miles of adventure, it suddenly feels less like buying fuel and more like buying memories.

    For £84 I’ve purchased:
    ✅ More motorways
    ✅ More campsites
    ✅ More sunsets
    ✅ More random conversations with strangers
    ✅ More opportunities to get hopelessly distracted by interesting roads

    That’s roughly the distance from Stafford to Edinburgh, or about a million miles when you’re grinning behind the wheel listening to Depeche Mode.

    Fuel is temporary.

    The memories are forever.

    Those look very much like Bitterballen 🇳🇱🍺 — one of the most famous Dutch bar snacks.

    The clues are:

    ✅ Small round breadcrumb-coated balls
    ✅ Deep-fried until golden brown
    ✅ Served with mustard
    ✅ Soft, rich filling inside
    ✅ Commonly eaten with beer in Dutch bars

    The filling is usually a thick beef ragout made from slow-cooked beef, stock, butter and flour. When hot, it has that stringy, creamy texture shown in your second photo.
