Tuscany, Tiny Streets & Terrifying Beer Mathematics

There comes a moment on every proper road trip when you stop being a tourist and start becoming part of the road itself.

For me, that moment happened somewhere between a cypress-lined Tuscan lane, a litre of suspiciously strong Italian lager, and accidentally driving Vanilla through a medieval street clearly designed for donkeys rather than a Volkswagen Transporter with 20-inch alloys.

And honestly?

Magnificent.

🇮🇹 SIENA — THE CITY OF STEEP STREETS & STRONGER LAGER

Siena is absolutely ridiculous.

Not in a bad way.
In a “how is this even real?” way.

Every street looks like it belongs on a film set. Tiny alleyways. Huge brick towers. Old women carrying shopping home past buildings older than Britain’s plumbing system. Beautiful Italian cafés tucked into impossible corners.

And then there’s the hills.

Nobody warns you about the hills.

Walking around Siena feels like accidentally joining the SAS selection process while carrying camera gear and trying not to spill a litre of beer.

Which brings us neatly onto…

🍺 THE GREAT EUROPEAN LAGER INVESTIGATION

Now then.

This has become serious.

As acting International Relations Officer for Stafford 41 Club, I have bravely continued my extensive scientific research into European lager pricing.

In Siena, I purchased:

🍺 ONE LITRE of quality Italian lager
🍺 In a stunning medieval square
🍺 Surrounded by beautiful architecture
🍺 Friendly staff
🍺 Beautiful Italian women
🍺 Warm evening atmosphere
🍺 Actual civilisation

Price?

€12.

Now compare that to:
🍺 One pint of Stella in The Wildwood
🍺 £5.25
🍺 Served next to a fruit machine and someone arguing about a vape charger

AI helped me work out all the currency conversions and liquid volume mathematics because frankly the calculations were becoming too emotionally overwhelming for one man alone.

The result?

Italy is currently winning the beer-to-ambience ratio by an absolute landslide.

🌲 THE CYPRESS TREE DREAM

For years I’ve seen those iconic Tuscan roads online.

Long winding lanes.
Tall cypress trees.
Golden sunlight.
Tiny stone farmhouses.

And now?

I’m actually driving through them.

Not on YouTube.
Not on a screensaver.
Not on somebody else’s drone footage.

Me.

In Vanilla.

Windows down.
Music on.
Somewhere between Siena and Florence with absolutely no rush whatsoever.

That’s the thing this trip keeps teaching me.

Sometimes the best moments aren’t landmarks.

They’re just moments.

A quiet road.
A beautiful view.
A random coffee stop.
A layby overlooking hills that look fake.

🚐 VANILLA — THE LITTLE GREY SPACESHIP

Honestly, Vanilla has been incredible.

This short-wheelbase VW campervan has now crossed countries, mountains, tunnels, ancient cities and more motorway services than any vehicle should reasonably survive.

The little grey machine just keeps rolling on.

Inside it’s become a weird travelling apartment:

🔥 heater
📱 charging hub
🎬 cinema
🛰 mobile command centre
🍳 rolling kitchen
🍺 international lager testing laboratory

At night it glows softly with all the little lights and gadgets while Europe quietly hums outside.

Sometimes I sit there and genuinely think:

“How on earth did this become my life?”

🇨🇭 SWITZERLAND ABSOLUTELY BLEW MY MIND

Nothing — and I mean NOTHING — prepared me for Lauterbrunnen.

I’ve seen mountains before.

These aren’t mountains.

These are gigantic geological flexes from nature itself.

Waterfalls dropping from cliffs. Snow on the peaks. Tiny villages below. Trains climbing impossible gradients. Paragliders floating through valleys like tiny dots.

I just stood there grinning like an idiot.

Even Vanilla looked impressed.

And Switzerland’s tunnels?

Honestly I think they’ve tunnelled through absolutely everything.

Mountain in the way?

Tunnel.

Another mountain behind that mountain?

Another tunnel.

At one point I’m fairly certain I drove through half the Earth’s crust.

One thing I didn’t expect was how much fun it would be sharing the journey live.

FindPenguins has basically become my digital travel diary.

Meanwhile Facebook has turned into:
“Where’s Nix now then?”

Every day there’s another:

🚐 campsite review
🌄 scenic view
😂 mildly ridiculous story
📸 cinematic poster

It’s like Alan Whicker met Top Gear and accidentally bought a campervan.

The adventure now rolls onward.

🌍 WHY THIS TRIP MATTERS

There’s something wonderfully old-school about simply setting off across Europe with no massive agenda.

No package holiday.

No airport chaos.

Just maps, roads, instincts, weather forecasts, occasional panic, and curiosity.

It reminds me of the sort of adventures people used to dream about decades ago.

Only now:
🚐 the campervan has Wi-Fi
📱 the phone can translate menus
🤖 AI helps calculate lager economics
🛰 satellites guide you through the Alps
📸 and a drone is waiting for its moment to finally get airborne

The world feels huge again out here.

And honestly?

That’s a brilliant feeling.

The roads ahead now point east.

Toward Trieste.
Toward the Adriatic.
Toward Croatia and Bosnia.
Toward new people, new scenery and more stories.

Vanilla rolls on.

And somewhere out there, another litre of European lager awaits scientific investigation.
