I’m still not there yet…

…but somewhere ahead of me, beyond the autobahns, the service stations, the forests and the endless German roads, lies Wolfsburg — the birthplace of Volkswagen.

And strangely…

Out of every place I’ve visited on this trip so far, this feels like the one that reaches deepest into my soul.

Not because it’s glamorous
Not because it’s famous.
But because somehow it feels connected to every road I’ve ever driven in my life.

At 19 years old, my second ever car was a little red VW Polo.

Tiny.
Slow.
Basic.

But to me, it was freedom on four wheels.

I absolutely adored that car.

I even sprayed the wheel trims red to match the bodywork because, at the time, I genuinely thought it looked like some sort of touring car legend. 😎

Later, I owned plenty of other cars over the years — Fords, Kias, Citroëns and all sorts besides — but honestly, none of them ever connected with me the way Volkswagens did. There was always just something about a VW that felt right. Then, when I was serving in the Royal Navy and shore based in Portsmouth, that little Polo became even more important to me.

It got me home at weekends, usually loaded up with fellow sailors who would chuck petrol money in for the journey. We used to jokingly call it “conversion to mileage.”

And honestly?
When you’re 19, music blasting through cheap speakers, windows down on a warm evening, chasing sunsets with nowhere important to be…

…you don’t need a Ferrari.

You just need a car, a road, and the feeling that life is waiting somewhere beyond the next roundabout.

Back then I had no idea where life would eventually take me.

I couldn’t possibly have imagined:
⚓ the Royal Navy
🚛 years in haulage
🛣️ endless motorway miles
🚗 four VW GTDs
🌍 driving across Europe alone
🏔️ Alpine mountain passes
🇭🇷 Croatian coastlines
🇧🇦 Bosnia sunsets
🚐 and eventually a campervan called Vanilla becoming part of who I am

Somewhere along the way, cars stopped simply being transport.

They became chapters of life.

Every one connected to a different version of me.
Different roads.
Different dreams.
Different memories.

And now, decades later, after crossing half of Europe in Vanilla, I find myself slowly heading towards the place where all of it really began.

Wolfsburg.

The city where millions of Volkswagens first opened their headlights to the world before carrying people towards holidays, heartbreaks, new jobs, family adventures, late-night drives, first kisses, wrong turns, freedom and fresh starts.

And somehow…
one of those journeys became mine.

So I’ve decided not to rush this moment.

Wolfsburg can wait until Saturday.

Because some places deserve more than just arriving tired and ticking a box.

Some places deserve anticipation.
A slow approach.
A proper arrival.

And perhaps that’s what this whole trip has really been about.

Not escaping life…

…but rediscovering the version of yourself that once sat behind the wheel of a little red Polo believing the whole world was out there waiting.

Maybe he was right after all
