    • Partial Curfew

      March 21, 2020 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

As of tomorrow there will be a curfew from 4pm to 4am. Maximo has to close it’s door so we won’t be able to go there during the day. Today two students, seated on a bench and reading in the Central Park were chased away from by the police.
So where do we go during the day? Walking endlessly around the block?
Today we went to a ecofarm. They base their organic farming on one of the Mayan calendars.
      The Mayans had 23 calendars!
They also do most things by recycling. See the pictures. There is a space for children (climbing, be with animals, playing ball games) and they provide workshops for interested farmers on organic farming based on the Mayan Calender.
They have hammocks, sofas, rocking chairs... etc. We might go there for the day.
They are always looking for volunteers, so anybody...?😎.
Two of our ladies today left. They managed to cross the border to Mexico!

      Speak soon....

      March 19, 2020 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We have a very busy life here! Getting up, go for a walk at 7am in a almost empty town. Going back, have breakfast, nap, going to Maximo (the school), study and exchange information and news. Go back home, have drinks, have dinner and then play Monopoly and Charade in Spanish wich turns out to be pretty funny after a couple a drinks.
In school students became less every day. They are taking chances to cross the border the Mexico. There is only one border cross between Guatemala and Mexico where you can cross. To get there you must organize transport if your Embassy is not organizing it.
The British and the Dutch Embassy do organize transportation for their citizen, the Australien, American and SWISS Embassy do not. The Germans even charter flights for the their citizen.
Once they get to the border there is a possibility they get quarantined for 21 days. If not they take a flight to Mexico City and from there usually fly to the US and then to their countries.
The trip they take is risky because anything can happen at any moment. Borders close all of a sudden, planes don‘t fly, etc.
I‘m still very happy here. If the countries goes on lockdown I WILL TRANSFER TO A 5* HOTEL!!
      See next post:-).

    • Stranded in Antigua, Guatemala

      March 17, 2020 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Some of the students made it out of the country - barley.
Some got stuck in the country where they where they had layover, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, etc.
And some of us did not make it out. A quarantine coming is likely.
I‘m doing very well. Since I am a at risk patient traveling now would be far more dangerous than staying put.
The roads are empty, everything closed - beside the places for daily necessities. The president yesterday held two (!) press conferences, announcing all kind of measurements.
I actually think they are doing a pretty good job. Also in tracking down and finding all of the 300 passengers of the flight last Friday. (Don’t wanna now how they did that).
In my guest house we are six people. Today we went to the supermarket . People behaved very well, nobody grabbed more than necessary stuff! Some item were restricted to 1, everybody complied.

      We stocked up;
      - Tequila
      - cleaning stuff
      - snacks
      - Monopoly and charade which we will play in Spanish. So much fun!

I’m in very good spirits! The country is closed until 31. March, then we’ll see further.

      Cheers

    • Flying out to the Cancun

      March 16, 2020 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Federica called me during the press conference of the SWISS Bundesrat saying they advice that Swiss citizen should come back. I could hear she was very concerned. We phoned and the end she said; You are an experienced and well traveled person, I trust your gut feeling. Thank you for that Schätziböhni!
I actually have a gut feeling that the virus will not visit me.

Today at school a girl from Switzerland told me that there are direct Edelweiss flights from Cancun to Zürich.
Until now I thought it is best to stay put because whilst traveling I’m more at risk than staying here.
Now the situation appears more likely to get worse and out of hand despite the virus does not like the heat (hearsay). Guatemala will not be able to handle many cases.

I decided to fly out tomorrow 17.3.2020 to Cancun for different reasons. The situation mentioned above. My daughter being concerned.
I’m closer to an airport which has direct flights to Switzerland. (For now the tickets is 2’700 SFR.!!!!!) I’m on sea level in Cancun. The altitude combined with the heat affects my breathing. 15 minutes walk and I’m exhausted.
The Mexican health system is better than here in Guatemala.
I booked an inexpensive AirBNB on the Beach Playa del Carmen, Cancun!! How cool is that!!
I have friends in Mexico City I can turn to in need. Thank you for that Mike and Oxanna!!

The doctor of Maximo Nivel (my school) controlled temperature and blood pressure and if fine gave us a “certificate” that we are virus free.
He also said that Mexico closes their border tomorrow. That people are not allowed on the beach. I’m like...., WHAT!!!!!??

I wanted adventure, I’ll have adventure.
Will they let me fly? Will they put me in quarantine in Mexico? I would love a hideout on the beaches of Play del Carmen....

    • Vigilantism because of THE virus

      March 16, 2020 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Here is the story.
Last Friday a plane came in from Mexico. Aboard were locals and foreigners. One Italian was tested positive, has been communicated and put into quarantine. The Guatemalan official took phone numbers and addresses of the passengers. They put 80 people in quarantine by calling them when they learned about the Italian. One passenger from Ohio, USA refused to collaborate. The authority out his picture on facebook. People recognized him and started to follow and push him around. They took him to the police station.
About 8 people of this flight are still missing.
The government uses the phone of the people to track them.

To me scary things are going on here. Of course on one side I’m happy the government takes such measures to protect the Guatemalan people. On the other hand my civil right heart is one alert.
Some of the Central- and most of South American countries are not doing well economically.
I’m afraid that countries activate military law to best contain the virus and control the people.

But what if once the crisis is over they won’t give the power back?

In the meanwhile in Guatemala there are 6 confirmed cases and about 300 person that might carry the virus.

The government told the Guatemalan to not party at the beach. What do they do? A big group parties at the beach???

As in Europe everything is shutting down. When we went to the institute today the streets were much less crowded. Less cars, less people.
