And so the journey begins with our absurdly small bags (7kg and 15kg) for a 3 and a half month trip. Sad to say goodbye to these lovely faces, who kindly stuck around to wave us off!

Beijing: 10000 steps by 9AM

Touched down safe and sound at 4.10AM after a 13 hour flight. Breezed through customs and baggage claim thanks to a near empty airport. Came to the realisation that the lounge and subway didn't open until 6.00AM.

Luckily the hotel let us check in at 9am so just had to fill in a few hours strolling around. Found some steamed buns for breakfast by finding a queue and joining it. Then walked some more, ate some more and now relaxing after a couple of naps.

Looking forward to our foodie tour tomorrow once we work out the subway system!もっと詳しく

The "Foodie" tour

After a bit of mall wandering (ranging from the conventional to kooky), we figured out the metro (super easy and cheap - 50c a trip ish) and made our way to Guloudajie station. Strolled along the greenery-draped canals and listened to random music being played by randoms. Was nice.

Then met our tour guide Lucy for a "foodie" tour with Urban Adventures. Waited a little for the other 3 tourists - who turned out to be a family from Wellington over here for their son's inline hockey world champs (and yes we did know someone in common).

Anyway, Lucy took us to a local supermarket (OK) and then a very quiet dumpling place. Dumplings were good. Then through the hutongs - narrow old alleyways. Quite interesting and learnt to make dumplings (would not have wanted to eat them as the hygiene practices were questionable, and I dropped all of mine repeatedly).

Continued past the Drum and Bell towers (cool, may return to go in) and went to a busy local place. Lucy ordered us some pork steamed buns (passable), and some soupy stuff with pork liver and tofu and wheat cake. It wasn't to our taste unfortunately. Apparently popular with the locals though (the place had been around for 100 years and packed with locals). The HouHai Lakes

So walked along the lake side with the glow of lights and bustle of people. Lively but safe. Had overpriced drinks and some pistachio nuts and sunflower seeds (in shell) at the Nuts bar. Then ambled some more.

Came across Tuatara beer so had one and a Mongozo mango beer (Belgian and surprisingly good). Saw a guy flying a very long kite (could barely see the end) and saw vendors with those shuttlecock things and some weird thing you fling into the air and it floats back down with lights on it. Cool.

Had a lovely walk and chat with the Wellington people. Saw some cool shops in the hutongs, then caught the subway back to hotel.もっと詳しく

Unplanned Pearl Market Trip

Had a lazy day today but needed to vacate the room for housekeeping so popped outside and decided spur of the moment to pop to the famous pearl market. A short subway ride away, it has 3 levels of watches, clothes, jewellery and crafts. A place where haggling is a must.

We perused the goods amidst the relatively aggressive vendors and enjoyed ourselves. Some nice goods and some knock offs. Lots of beautiful things - helped that we have so little space to clog up our bags so meant we didn't buy as much!

But we did end up buying a watch each for about 30 bucks a piece (from an initial price of about 80 or 100). Intense haggling but good fun.

Met a guy who does beautiful little glasses and vases. He can then paint your name inside in tiny font. Very cool and not too expensive. But we bought the cheap imitation one for 2 bucks instead ☺.

After that, ate and visited a supermarket warehouse type place. Oddly empty and many bare shelves. Was odd.

Then home, ate some steamed buns. Watched a movie and slept for our 8am start tomorrow.もっと詳しく

Temple of Heaven: Aging Gracefully

An early start to do an almost full day tour with Intrepid Urban Adventures. Our tour group included us, an older well-travelled Aussie couple, and two lovely older men (one from Netherlands and the other from Quebec, Canada). First stop - Temple of Heaven park. Lots of older citizens exercising in the morning in a giant park. Tai chi, shuttlecock hackey, dance classes and random exercise gear. We had a go - quite good fun.

Basically once you hit 65 (men) or 60 (women), you come here every morning and play poker and exercise with your friends. Sounds pretty good and explains how everyone looked in shape!

Then we walked around the sights - beautiful buildings and a few interesting stories. Very old buildings, but young trees. Buildings (400 years old) are much older than NZ buildings. But trees are special if they're say 200 or 100 years old - relatively sure we have older trees in NZ right? Odd but nice to see NZ has some old stuff too. Oh and they use the number 9 lots - like the circular area which has 9 stones in a circle in the middle, then 18, then 27 and so on (up to 81).

There's also a matchmaker spot where parents go and lay out their kid's personal details to try find a match.

There was an echo wall and echo spot and other buildings. Quite nice then on to part 2 - Tiananmen Square.もっと詳しく

Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City

Went to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City and Jianshan Gardens.

The square is huge. Lots of people. Some security. Apparently a million people can stand in the square. Big picture of Chairman Mao overlooking it all.

Forbidden city is also huge with 10,000 rooms. Big open courtyards. Massive crowds.

Went along to the Jianshan gardens. Attended a tea tasting. Nice tea and nice cups - our favourites were the Ginseng oolong and Jasmine green tea. Walked up a hill and looked out over the smog. Lots of walking in the heat.

Finished the day with a nice late lunch/early dinner with our tour group at a great little local place.もっと詳しく

Wangfujing Night Market

Relaxed day. Walked along the shopping street (Wangfujing street) and around malls with insanely expensive luxury items. Did not buy any (no surprises there)! Found an English bookstore.

Went to the Wangfujing night market, where they sell all kinds of street food (including scorpion on a stick - some of which were still moving while on the stick...). Did not partake. But got a lot of other street food, was pretty good. Then walked back to hotel and got some bakery treats.

Also we don't really have access to Facebook or email so just comment on one of these pages and hopefully we'll see it. Or will reply once we're in Frankfurt on Thursday (maybe Friday NZ time).もっと詳しく

The Great Wall (at Mutianyu)

Up at 5.30am to see the Great Wall (with Intrepid Urban Adventures). Our tour group was made up of people our age this time (a couple from Miami, a Malaysian couple from Australia, and a guy from Michigan - though he'd been living in Japan the last few months). A 2 hour drive in a minivan out of the city. Quite nice countryside - chestnuts and fruit trees. Lots of green. Got to the wall early ish and avoided some of the crowds but still a few people around.

Took a chairlift up to the wall (to save the steep 50min walk uphill), enjoyed the scenery in peace and quiet. Walked along the wall for a while. Great views and pretty awesome overall. Didn't realise the wall was on top of a hill slash mountain to make it easier to defend. Would have been very impressive in ancient times (although without the trees growing next to both sides of course).

Bit steep in parts and was good exercise but worth it. Parts of the wall we were there alone which was awesome. Very much enjoyed it.
Then took toboggan down - had to keep slowing for a woman in front of me who was busy taking selfies (Radi wanted to go faster). But was heaps of fun when you got up some speed. Fantastic way to get back down.

Then went to a restaurant and a had a big delicious feed. Followed by another 2 hour trip back. Interesting driving. Good to see a bit more rural - big change from the urban area.

Walked and took subway back. Went into a random supermarket hidden down some steps. Found pineapple beer which will try later. Then time to relax a little!もっと詳しく

National Museum of China

Late start and we were off to Tiananmen Square to see the National Museum of China. Huge building and free if you bring your passport. Some English writing and quite interesting exhibits.

Checked out an exhibition on the history of Chinese currency - lots of cool old coins. China was also one of the first countries to have paper currencies. Also looked at a beautiful exhibition on Buddhist figurines; some really nice Chinese paintings and pottery.

There was a very big exhibit on Ancient China which had a lot of information, but presented well. Such an interesting and vast history. Lots of guides keeping watch on people too.

The Ancient China exhibit took us through to about 1840 and then it was upstairs to the Road to Rejuvenation. An ... interesting exhibit, focusing on 1840 (opium wars) and onwards (revolution and a communist country).

Far less English in this one so we didn't learn as much but very interesting. My knowledge of recent Chinese history is patchy but I think there was some famine etc. there - no mention in English in the museum though. Even just the change in writing style between exhibits was intriguing. It went from 3rd person, objective facts to 1st person, adjective filled, emotive language. Still, there's two sides to every story so won't judge. And now intrigued enough to find out more.

After the museum, a walk back to a mall, and ate at an "Italian" place for about 9 bucks. Radi had pasta (decent for $2.50) and I had something like a pizza but with rice instead of the pizza base. And taro milk tea. Surprisingly good.

Did some shopping then grabbed some more baked goods for dinner and back to hotel. Oh by the way all the locations for these posts are probably off as Google doesn't work properly - but should be fine from next stop (Frankfurt) onwards.もっと詳しく

Parting with Peking Duck

Our final full day in Beijing, spent mostly being lazy and getting ourselves sorted for Frankfurt. Changed some money over at a bank. An interesting process involving passport and about 40min - but no commission and a good rate so that's good...

Couldn't leave Beijing without trying the famous local specialty (Peking Duck). Hotel restaurant was closed so followed directions to a nearby restaurant - no idea of the name but the Mandarin characters looked similar to what the concierge wrote. Glad we did. Was delicious!

Crispy roast duck with shallot and cucumber strips, delicious barbecue-like sauce and duck soup. The nice waitress showed us how to make little wraps from the thin tortilla-like things and was so good. Would definitely recommend.

Cheap too - about $23 for a half duck between the two of us. Definitely worth the hype!もっと詳しく

An early (but not early enough) start meant we were a tad late to the airport and almost missed our flight. Made it on time thanks to a lot of running and the kindness of strangers letting us cut multiple lines.

Then a 9 hour flight with Lufthansa - seats made for tall people (yay), more leg room due to being at the front of the section (yay), and actually decent food (more yay).

Frankfurt is nice so far, much cooler and fresh air and a breeze. Like home. Rained soon after so even more like home. Anyway caught the train into Frankfurt and found our Airbnb near the river. Cute little place, but no washing machine (oops - our bad). So first mission was to wash our accumulated clothes.

Had a lovely stroll through cobblestone streets past little shops and restaurants. Enjoying it so far. Kebab for dinner. Then an early night - it's 3am in Beijing so we're due for a sleep in. Will post more later.もっと詳しく

Markets, Brezels and Meandering

Walked around Frankfurt today and it was lovely. Ate good food, looked at shops, stumbled through German conversations, and generally had fun.

Had lots of brezel. Delicious. Really wishing we could find a good brezel back home now. Suggestions welcome. Currywurst was also good. As was Bratwurst. Saw a few markets including the Kleinmarkthalle - very pretty.

Found a board game place (typical us). The owner spoke perfect English and was super helpful. Was going to buy a game for travelling called Teubseeabenteuer (Deep sea adventure), but at the checkout saw these cute and tiny games so got 3 (they were cheap as) and take up less space than a pack of cards together. Will let you know how they go.

Saw the really nice mall building the Zeil. Crazy glass design and longest elevator in Europe which we'll have to try. Also had ice cream rolls - they pour cream and the flavourings onto an open air freezer thing and chop it all up, spread it out flat then roll it up. It's kinda like watching someone make a crepe but different. And tastes good too.

Got phone sorted so if you want our Europe number let us know. Ordering in some Italian for dinner so hopefully it arrives soon. Ciao!もっと詳しく

Had brunch at Oosten, overlooking the river. Was nice, if a bit chilly. Then sauntered through town. Almost everything closed in the morning with few people around. But then come lunchtime, a good amount of people, more sun and lots of food places open.

Found a Christmas shop. Very cool and just what we were looking for. They also had these horizontal windmill type things where the candles below cause enough warm air to turn the fan. Very beautiful. So we bought one and will hopefully send it home or have it survive somehow.

Walked around and saw the beautiful Römerberg and Rathaus. The Rathaus was stunning, we're not exactly experts on architecture, but you didn't need to be to appreciate how beautiful it was. The more you looked at it, the more you realised how much artistry they had put into it. Very cool.

Nice to have a day that was warm enough to wander around in our tshirts too. Also accidentally stumbled onto a dodgy street in our wanderings, a bit creepy, but also entertaining. Made sure to leave it pretty quickly.もっと詳しく

It was time to say auf wiedersehen to Frankfurt. Arrived at the airport early, tried out the Luxx lounge. Was good. No meals but enough snacks including good bread and frankfurters (of course).

A quick two hour flight to Edinburgh and breezed through immigration etc. Then we took the tram to our Airbnb. Easy to find - go to York Place, then hang a left past Albany St and Forth St. All Dunedin streets we've flatted on! Liking Edinburgh already. Feels familiar at least.

The place looks great (Irn Bru left as a welcome present, haven't had one in so long!). Anyway time to head out for some food and a wander.もっと詳しく

Stumbling upon Diagon Alley

Wandered around for a bit. Had a nice meal and a good and cheap half pint (NZD $4). Strolled through Edinburgh old and new towns. Beautiful buildings. All so similar, looks great.

Was very confused because (after 4 days trying to get my ear into German) I kept hearing German everywhere. Any time I could hear someone having a conversation, I could swear it was German. The Scottish accents only exacerbated the effect. Very weird. And didn't help that when I finally started to shake off the effects I slowly realised that we were actually surrounded often by Germans. Lots of tourists. Irony.

Anyway, stumbled upon Victoria Street, which was JK Rowling's inspiration for Diagon Alley. Found a cool shop selling Harry Potter gear and bought a really nice print.もっと詳しく

Headed up to Arthur's Seat today. Walked through cute little lanes, and a beautiful park to reach the base.

Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano that's basically been left untouched (which is very cool). It's often been mentioned as the possible location of Camelot - hence the name.

It was a steep climb at times, but fun to try and scramble up the rocks. There were some tracks, but otherwise you could just walk wherever - no signs or rangers telling you to be safe, just common sense. Quite nice in a way. Only had to backtrack once going down (would've been fine going up that part). Views were definitely worth the climb. Made sure to check out the ruins of St Anthony's chapel on the way up too.

So a decent walk up and down, and the weather was ideal for it too. Then wandered on trying to find food. Settled on cheap sandwiches to eat at home. And some delicious local shortbread from Pinnies & Poppyseeds too.

Checked out Joy and Lloyd's old place here too, and grabbed some dinner from Edinburgh's first Indian restaurant (yum).

Went to the castle today. It was cool. Got audioguides, they were nice but a bit slow. Managed to serendipitously get our timing right and got to see an actress portray Colonel Anne Macintosh (which was very well done and Radi even got roped into some audience participation), and caught the gun firing at 1pm. Checked out the National War Museum which was very interesting. Dragoon museum was nice but pretty cramped.

Finally had some haggis (good) and fish and chips (good). Bought some fudge and a Christmas ornament. Tried going to Knights Vault but closed. Hopefully tomorrow.

Wandered around a bit more. Had a nice and affordable 3 course Italian lunch. Delicious.

Then found a market on the Royal Mile (and a Warhammer shop). Market was nice. Almost bought wool slippers, but instead went for 3 nice prints.

Then more wanderings - past a cool sword shop and past the cafe where JK Rowling wrote most of her first book (it was packed, no surprises there). Followed by a coffee and macarons at a cute French cafe.

Left the apartment and went walking. Left luggage at bus station (cheap ish) and looked at shops. Radi bought a green cardigan. Found Rose street which was cool. Had cheap lunch at a cosy cafe. Haggis and cheese baked spud and a morning roll with potato scone and haggis. Was good. Wish I'd eaten more morning rolls.

Went to Coro the Chocolate Cafe and had waffles and thick hot chocolate (very thick and rich). Soooo good, would definitely recommend.

Then more wanderings and saw the National Museum of Scotland. Interesting exhibits on people of the world, machines, animals and space.

Then had a drink at a place that looked cool. Thistle Cross cider was good. Ran back to bus station to get bags as we'd enjoyed the drinks a bit too much and were running a little late. But got them fine (well, nearly lost Radi with her 'wonderful' sense of direction) and made it with a few minutes to spare. Then the train to North Berwick to see our family friends the Z's in East Lothian.

Met with Joe in a local pub, had a go at some pool, then onwards to their place. Had a lovely home cooked meal and chatted until midnight.もっと詳しく

The Howe

Woke up late. Breakfast using the Aga to toast (freshly baked) bread. There's definitely an art to it.

Then went on to the Howe, the Z's getaway place in the countryside. Spotted many pheasants and grouse on the way (as well as plenty of sheep).

As we had a tour around the place, saw a beautiful white owl that had taken up residence in the barn (it actually flew right past us to get out). Surreal. The barn is from 1823, so almost 200 years old. Unsure of how old the house itself is. Joe made a fire, so we relaxed and chatted in front of it with a nice cuppa. Note: there's no electricity so it's like stepping back in time. Very peaceful!

Walked up to Cairnview with our stone contribution. Great views. Cassidy (the dog) got a run around. Lovely time and then home for dinner and chatting. Great way to pass a Saturday.もっと詳しく

Seaside Strolls and Seafood

Went for a walk along Cove, had a nice harbour. Had cliffs which recently had rocks fall away to reveal caves. The scenery kind of reminded us of tunnel beach! Climbed some rocks, was fun, if made somewhat tricky with slippery moss on the rocks. Lottie (the dog) had a blast running around the beach, introducing herself to everyone there.

Then to St Abbs for lunch, so delicious. Radi had crab baguette (best crab meal we've had) and I had Cullen skink. Bit thin but still very very good. Followed by delicious tray bakes (e.g. slices).

Also headed to Dunbar, checked out a great harbour with beautiful views, and saw an old castle (from a distance). Would've loved to spend more time in Dunbar. Bought a lot of cheese and ate far too much of it after another one of Deb’s delicious home cooked meals. So many cheese varieties here!

Joe then gave us a small whisky tasting session. Aberlour a'bunadh was our favourite. It was cask strength (60%) and verryyy nice. Lots of different flavour stages.

Had the first of our longer train journeys. Train from Dunbar to Shrewsbury (with a quick change in Birmingham). Managed to figure it out and even managed to arrive a few minutes early. Enjoyed the scenery and snapshots of the towns that we passed.

Chris and Alma kindly met us on the platform, and took us onward to their lovely village - Culmington. Unfortunately, the low lying mists impeded our views of the Shropshire Hills, but we appreciated the countryside and the cool weather nonetheless.

Alma made us a great home cooked meal (locally sourced), and we had a lovely time chatting into the evening.もっと詳しく
