    Walking Tour of Budapest

    June 13, 2022 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We were on the Pest side for this tour.

Budapest, the heart-stealing capital of Hungary, is nestled on the banks of the majestic Danube River, with the hilly Buda district on one side and the flat Pest on the other. This city is a treasure trove of architectural splendors, from the iconic Gothic Revival-style Hungarian Parliament Building to the Roman-inspired Fisherman's Bastion. Budapest's rich history, however, also bears witness to somber periods. One of the city's most poignant memorials, the Shoes on the Danube Bank, is a moving reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust. This art installation features sixty pairs of metal shoes, cast in styles from the 1940s, lined up along the river edge. The shoes symbolize the thousands of Hungarian Jews who were forced to remove their shoes before being shot into the river by the Arrow Cross militiamen during World War II. The beauty of Budapest, therefore, lies not only in its stunning landscapes and architecture but also in its powerful reminders of history, fostering reflection and understanding among its visitors.Read more
