I love all of the Christian symbols here. It's very interesting how Jonah as a picture of Jesus was so widely used, whereas we don't so much today despite Him making the connection Himself. No photos inside the catacombs at it is a place of reverence and celebration. There are no bodies in the level open for tours, but there are small chapels where people sometimes hold a service to take communion.

After the tour (you can't enter alone, and once you see the labyrinth of passages below you understand why) we walked along the path through trees and field next to the Appian Way.

The bus stop on the way there is literally at the entrance. The bus stop for the way back is not for the faint of heart.Baca selengkapnya

Natale di Roma Celebrations

The actual birthday of Rome is April 21, but they have events Friday - Tuesday. We went over to the Circus Maximus in the morning to see all of the demonstrations and booths. It's like a Renaissance faire, but less commercial - more celebratory.

I went back to the Circus Maximus in the afternoon to watch them walk gladiator battles. It was pretty fun.

The guy in the first picture is pretty hardcore into this. He has a tattoo of the Colosseum on his arm and the Roman eagle on the back of his neck.Baca selengkapnya

On our way to the restaurant, we went right by Largo di Torre Argentina, where Julius Caesar was assassinated and now the home of a cat sanctuary

This restaurant in the Jewish Ghetto makes the most amazing artichokes!

The dessert was spectacular - an incredibly rich caramel ice cream with bitter chocolate and candied almonds.

This parade of over 2,000 reenactors wound their way from the Circus Maximus all through the historical district past the Colosseum and back to the Circus Maximus. One guy was inviting people over to crown them and for a selfie.

Julius Caesar and entourage were there a the crowd yelled, "Ave, Caesar" to him. Dad got stuck in a legion crossing the street. :)Baca selengkapnya

I have never been over to this neighborhood on the other side of the Tiber. We walked across the island in the middle of the river to get there and then enjoyed the ivy covered buildings.

This free park was a wonderful escape from the city! We rented a golf cart which was super fun. A lovely lake, temples, statues, and an abandoned replica of the Globe theatre.

Stories from Grandpa Jack:Never Trust Your Cousins

We spent some of our free time collecting a few of Dad's stories about his Italian grandparents, Guilio Campoli and Argia DiPietro. Here's the first!

There are lots more stories, but this was a fun start in some of the places they lived in or visited!

Giulio was born in Alatri, and Argia was born in Cisterna di Latina. They were married in Cisterna di Latina - perhaps even in the church we visited before it was bombed during the war.

The names of the towns they immigrated from came down just mixed up enough that I had a hard time finding them, but finally found enough records to confirm the correct places.

I hope everyone enjoys these stories that have been passed down through the family!
