    O'Hare Airport

    2 Ekim 2018, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

My flight, AirFrance 137, was scheduled to leave Oct. 2nd, reaching Charles de Gaulle airport by 8:20 am the next morning. The seating in Economy was cramped and very uncomfortable. It was impossible to sleep. We were fed, though, and I wished I had brought a pair of decent headphones to listen to the entertainment on board or my own music. The ear buds I brought did a terrible job of drowning out the noise of the plane's engines. Next time I’ll know better.Okumaya devam et

    De Gaule airport arrival

    3 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Arrived at Charles De Gaule airport near Paris. Set off to retrieve luggage and find the Viking representative to provide transportation to the ship. There would be quite a wait to be on our way to our floating home for the next several days.Okumaya devam et

    Boarding the Viking ship Rinda

    3 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

After landing, the long journey by foot to the baggage claim area followed. Once reunited with my little suitcase, I looked around for signs of Viking personnel with the expectation they'd get me to our ship. I found the Viking group at the other end of the baggage area with a fairly large group of fellow "cruisers" waiting for direction and transport. Eventually, a small group of us was lead to yet another waiting area where we were told to sit a while longer. Finally, a young woman arrived who instructed us to follow her. As we were walking, she told me Martha (my bunk mate and cruise partner) had wanted to wait for me but had been convinced to proceed to the ship. I would find her already on board. Our group of five were finally turned over to our van driver for the approximately 45 minute trip to La Pecq where we would board our ship, the Rinda.Okumaya devam et

    The Church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye

    3 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

The present parish church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye was built in 1827. It is the fourth sanctuary to have been built on the site since 1028. In the beginning of the 18th century it was known as ‘Saint-Germain-de-Paris’. The church is now dedicated to St. Germain and St. Vincent who founded the town at the beginning of the 11th century.

The Collegiate Church of Notre Dame

    5 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

The building of the church Notre-Dame of Vernon started in the 11th century but wasn't completed until the 17th century. The style is mostly gothic. The elegant narrow nave is lit by a beautiful set of contemporary stained-glass windows and a few ancient ones. The church was dedicated in 1072 "to the Holy Mother of God," and is why it is named Notre-Dame (Our Lady. In 1658 the pavement was raised about two feet to keep it out of reach of the swelling of the river Seine. Two engravings on the outer wall of the church commemorate these floods. The west facade of the church boasts a unique rose window in 'flaming' gothic style.Okumaya devam et

    Notre Dame Cathedral, Rouen

    6 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This cathedral is considered a landmark of art history. Visitors are seeing
essentially what Claude Monet saw as he painted 30 different studies of the frilly
Gothic facade at various times of day. There's been a church on the cathedral's
site for more than a thousand years. The building present today was constructed
between the 12th and 14th centuries, though lightening strikes, wars (the
cathedral was devastated in WWII fighting), and other destructive forces meant
    constant rebuilding.

    Exploring Rouen

    6 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Rouen is an ancient city on the Seine in the north of France. Once the capital of
the Duchy of Normandy, it was one of the largest and most prosperous cities of
medieval Europe. The city has a turbulent history. It was devastated by fire and
plague several times during the Middle Ages, and was occupied by the English
during the Hundred Years War. Joan of Arc was tried for heresy and burned at the
stake in Rouen in 1431. And during WWII, Allied bombing raids laid waste to
    large parts of the city.

Church of St. Joan of Arc

    6 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Church of Saint Joan of Arc (Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc) - completed in 1979, the
church feels Scandinavian inside and out--another reminder of Normandy's
Nordic roots. Sumptuous 16th-century windows, salvaged from the former
Egise St. Vincent, bombed out in 1944, were worked into the soft architectural
lines. The shape of the roof is supposed to symbolize the flames of Joan's fire.

    Normandy beaches of WWII

    7 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Until now, we'd been blessed with excellent weather. Today, however, we learned early that the American cemetery had been closed for the day. High winds and storming during the night had knocked down tree branches and produced other debris that could pose a
danger to visitors. Instead, we would spend the time allotted for the cemetery on Omaha Beach.

D-Day Landing Museum -Musee du Debarquem

    7 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

This museum has windows facing the harbor so is a good way to get a look outside without experiencing the nasty weather like that we encountered on Sunday. The models, videos, and photographs it holds illustrate the construction and use of the prefabricated harbor. While battles raged the remarkable task of building this harbor took place in just 12 days.Okumaya devam et

    The Longues-sur-Mer Battery

    7 Ekim 2018, Fransa ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

The Longues-sur-Mer Battery was a critical link in Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defense which consisted of more that 15,000 defensive structures stretching from Norway to the Pyrenees. These guns could hit targets up to 12 miles away with relatively sharp accuracy if linked to good target information. Four German casemates, 300 yards inland, were arranged in a semicircle to maximize the firing range east and west, and are the only original coastal artillery guns remaining in place in the D-Day region. This battery was staffed by 194 German soldiers. It took seven soldiers to manage each gun, which could be loaded and fired six times per minute (the shells weighed 40 pounds).Okumaya devam et
