We found a double room with ensuite at the Flashpackers hostel. Quite good. We decided to stay for a second night.

In a cabin for two nights. Tannum Sands is a lovely place, and not at all crowded. Beautiful walking track along the foreshore from our caravan park to the point. Lots of birds! Nice lunch at Rocksalt.Read more

We booked two nights at the Yeppoon Beachhouse, which is quite a good place to stay. We met Mary O'Donnell at the pub for dinner. Mary and Steve moved up to Yeppoon from Albury many years ago. Steve arrived back from his work at the Maura coal mine on Friday and we had a great night at their place with Mary, Steve, Michael, Joe and Gabby.Read more

On the recommendation of Steve and Mary we decided to visit Eungella National Park on the way from Yeppoon to Airlie Beach. Tracey managed to find accommodation in a cabin at Eungella Chalet. We drove past a lot of canefields before the steep climb up to Eungella. The next morning we did some walks in the rainforest near Eungella, mainly at Broken River. After an early lunch we drove down to Finch Hatton Gorge for more walking and clambering over rocks.Read more

After a pretty big day in the Eungella National Park we arrived at the Coral Sea Resort in Airlie Beach just after sunset. The view from our room is beautiful.

After a breakfast of bircher muesli, fresh fruit and really good croissants at our Airlie Beach resort we headed north not knowing where we would get to today. We called in to Bowen, a picturesque coastal town. We shared a table with a Kiwi traveler for our morning coffee and he recommended the campsite at Paluma Dam, so that is where we ended up, pitching the tent for the first time this trip. Very narrow steep winding road through the rainforest up to Paluma, then about 12km of unsealed track out to the campsite in the rainforest next to the dam. Good clean eco toilets, no showers. Great chatting to our only neighbors Wolf and Nat around their fire. Nat is an environmental economist.

The next morning we went for a 5km walk in the rainforest from the campsite and also walked in to the Birthday Creek Falls on the way out.Read more

Ater driving back down from the mountains we stopped in Ingham and had a bit of a look at the Tyto Wetlands. Lots of birds. We had thought were might camp again around Mission Beach but the campgrounds are packed, see we booked a cheap b&b. Tomorrow we head for Port Douglas, booked in for three nights at a resort hotel.Read more

Pat Esler It was a beautiful spot and we had it completely to ourselves thanks to a birding map, that had numbered birdwatching sites on it. It was just a chained up gate on the hwy without any sign or indication. So in we went.
