UNESCO Wooden Churches Day in Castro

After threading our way up a narrow channel lined with mile after mile of commercial mussel farm beds, we anchored in the harbour at the city of Castro on the island of Chiloe. We have definitely left the rugged glaciers and mountains of Patagonia behind.

The day was touring a series of UNESCO World Heritage churches built by local fishermen. Wood was the most available building material and they turned their boat building joinery skills into church construction . . . No nails used! Quite amazing buildings.

Some craft market shopping, a nice lunch and back on board to head north to warmer climes.Read more
