Porto - Boat trip & walk to the beach

    5. mai, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

With my head still dizzy from the wine, I went on the boat trip I had pre-booked to see Porto from the river Douro.
They couldn't have made it more impersonal since they just played a recorded text that gave us some background information. This plus the soft back and forth rocking of the boat made me almost fall asleep.

In general, I still did not feel a 100% good so I had some lunch and went for a longer walk to the beach afterwards.

    Camino Day Nine

    5. mai, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

    Alvaiázere to Alvorge
    ~22.7 km/14 miles

I walked by myself all day, which was kind of nice. I enjoy walking with others, but it's nice to walk at my own pace, and stop to take photos or rest when it suits me.

There was a light rain most of the morning, and a lot of mud on the trail. My sandals and socks were covered with mud, so the only thing to do was to walk through some clear water when I found it.

There are so many crumbling buildings in the area that add to the landscape that I enjoy taking pictures of, so that was sort of the focus for today when I wasn't sloshing in the mud.

I stopped for breakfast in Ansião which had a lot of interesting public art.

I'm staying at a very nice albergue in Alvorge where I was tempted by the single private room. It was a good choice as the dorm is full of guys.

We all had a really good dinner of pork, rice, salad, dessert and wine for only €10!

Evan from Australia is here along with two Germans, an Italian, and a Korean man who has walked many Caminos.

    Flourish and Blotts

    5. mai, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Arrived with a group of pilgrims into Porto today. There was one person from the Netherlands one person from San Francisco another from Poland someone from Austria, New Zealand, and Ireland so we had many countries represented. I also passed someone else from Spain. Porto is beautiful along the river It’s just a stunning city, but it is big and there are lots of people - a little different from the countryside that I’ve been walking through for the past two weeks after leaving Lisbon. met up with Tammy and her husband, William, and Rachelle for dinner and then went to a wine bar called Scarlet, which has locations in Porto, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.

The walk today was mostly downhill with a few uphill portions, walking and various settings, heavy traffic, old Roman roads forest, and then eventually the suburbs of Porto and then down to the city of Porto.

A famous bookstore called Livraria Lello which is where JK Rowling is said to have been inspired during a 1991, while writing the 1st Harry Potter Novel and is used as its basis for Hogwarts and the wizardly bookstore in the Harry potter universe. . It is so popular now that you have to go online and purchase tickets for the privilege of entering their store, but is well worth the 10 euros.

    Porto - Livraria Lello

    5. mai, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Early in the morning, I went to the Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful book shops in the world.
Rumor has it that J.K. Rowling was inspired by this place for her famous Harry Potter books.
And as a big fan of the books (and the movies), I needed to go there. 😉

Indeed, a beautiful and extraordinary spot, especially the wooden staircase in the centre of the store!
You can use the value of your ticket to buy a book. However, since I need to seriously consider each gram in my backpack, I thought better of it and just enjoyed the experience.

Moving To A Town of 72 People

    4. mai, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

So our friends moved to this little town, which is about 25 miles from the bigger town, which is where they picked us up called Coimbra. The town they live in is small 72 people few of which speak English. Needless to say our friends are quickly learning Portuguese and sounding pretty darn good. We had a chance to meet a lot of these people because we unexpectedly got invited to a birthday party of one of the clans in the community and it was a raucous CAKE party ! Dave even played guitar and we got to meet everyone who kissed us on both cheeks and I hope I didn’t get Covid.

I have no idea what anybody said, but everybody look like they were having a good time. What a blast.

Miradouro da Vitória & cable car

    4. mai, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After checking in to my hostel, I decided to go for a walk through Porto. The sun was now shining and I had found many things that I am inrerested to see upfront.
First I went to the Miradouro da Vitória to enjoy the spectacular view on the city.
While walking to the urban cable car leaving from the other side of the river Douro, I ran into one of my room mates from the hostel and we ended up going there together. From the cable car you see Porto from a different perspective, especially the picturesque district of Ribeira with its colorful houses.

    Camino Day Eight

    4. mai, Portugal ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

    Calvinos to Alvaiázere
    ~21.25 km/13.2 miles

The theme of the day was rain!
I walked today with Evan from Australia who was in the albergue last night.

First a light drizzle, then real rain and the donning of rain gear. Then the sun would come out and my poncho became a sauna suit, so off it would come. Only for it to start raining again 15 minutes later. This went on all day. Fortunately it wasn't a long day of walking. We arrived in Alvaiázere around 12:30.

Today brought more hills and eucalyptus forests. At least we were rewarded with some nice views after the hill climbing.

I couldn't check into my accommodation until 3 pm, so I went looking for something to eat while I waited. I found Evan had the same idea and had just arrived at one of the two restaurants that were open on a Sunday. My hotel has a restaurant, but it's closed today.

We decided that we should go for a pretty big meal since there might not be anything available later on today. The specialty of the place was pork and we thought that we had both ordered pork but somehow we got a portion of pork and a portion of bacalhau (cod) . It turned out that the bacalhau was really the better choice of the two. With the fish and pork we also got chips, French fries, rice, salad, bread, olives, and something called migas which was bread mixed with some sort of greens and beans - quite delicious. There was enough left over that I can have it tonight and/or tomorrow for breakfast!

    Porto

    4. mai, Portugal ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

I slept surprisingly well in the albergue accommodating 180 people 😅 I fell asleep before the light was switched off (10pm) and with only a few interruptions got up at 5:45.

At 6, I started my hike which again lead me along lonely beaches and over wooden footbridges. The only thing bothering me a bit was the rain that kept starting and stopping but at some point, I was just determined to reach Porto and to enjoy the city as much as possible!

Since I was only allowed to check-in at 3pm, I used the time to enjoy some fresh fish and to finally try portuguese wine
