    Milngavie, Scotland

    May 9, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

First day of the actual hike on the WHW. Got up around 6, showered, and got a quick breakfast at the hotel and wheeled our luggage and packs to the Central Trail Station…. About 2 blocks. Bought train tickets to Milngavie. The train was to leave in about 5 minutes, so we hoofed it downstairs to the below platform and caught the train. We arrived in Milngavie after making a number of stops and then had to wait quite some time for the tour company to pick up the luggage. After that, we started our hike into Milngavie. But first, we needed a hot beverage to ward off the chill (about 40 F). Jeff also needed to buy some contact lens saline. The first pharmacy we tried said they did not carry it because all the other places did…. Strange retail philosophy, but oh well…. We waited for an optometrist shop to open at 9 am, but when they did, they did not carry it either. Finally found another pharmacy that did carry it and Jeff bought two bottles, so we would not have to go through this search again.Read more

  • Which Way?

    May 9, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

We were then ready to start out trek…. But which way? We consulted the map…. And then looked up, to see a giant metal arch over which is stated “WEST HIGHLAND WAY”…. I think that’s the way…. And so we begin. The Way starts out pretty urban and quite crowded with locals just strolling this hard-surfaced portion of the trail. But after a few miles, the crowd thinned out to only the people wearing backpacks, most of which intended to hike the trail for multiple days. Some of the groups we were destined to see over and over again throughout the day.Read more

  • Glengoyne

    May 9, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

A highlight of the day was the Glengoyne distillery… “Unhurried since 1803.” I bought a small airline-size bottle of 18 year old Scotch and Jeff and I shared that “wee dram” on a bench in the shade. A little bit warms the esophagus all the way down for quite some time and even that little bit took some time to sip down. Actually, it was quite good.Read more

  • Gartness honesty lunch

    May 9, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We had lunch at the Beech House in the mini-town of Dumgoyne… Not too interesting, but the only place to eat in this wide spot in the road. I got the Haddock and chips…. Then on our way again.
About 8 miles out, we went through the small cluster of houses called Gartness. There was a self-serve ice cream freezer. It was unmanned. You took out the ice cream bar of your choice and left a pound in the small plastic box sitting next to the freezer.
