    Big to Small Cruises

    January 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Mark our regular limo driver picked us up on time for our flight to Fort Lauderdale. We will be spending 2 days in Florida at a Marriott near the cruise port. We then board our “Big” ship The Harmony of the Seas (currently the largest in the world, 6780 passengers) for a 7 day cruise. On January 20 we board our “Small” ship the new Regent Seven Seas Explorer (750 passengers) for a 10 day cruise. Besides great weather and beautiful ports, we should be able to share some interesting onboard comparisons.Read more

  • Our First Day

    January 13, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The boarding process on the largest ship in the world was quick with no lines. In fact it was faster then most smaller ships we have sailed on.
Our 367 sq ft Junior Suite was much larger then we had thought. It has a huge walk in closet, a hanging closet and many additional drawers plus shelves. Too many even for us to fill.
In our suite was a WOWband that is loaded with all our reservations and pre cruise packages. It also serves as our room key.
We were amazed at how seamless it was going from the cab to our stateroom.
We also had time for a welcome aboard drink and a light lunch.

  • Our First Night

    January 13, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Our first night was packed with entertainment at a large variety of venues. We visited many unique bars with musical performers. Other highlights were the Bionic Bar where robots made Rose an OK martini and the Rising Tide Bar which moves up and down between 3 decks.
Then we went to our first pre-reserved venue which was an amazing Ice Show. The choreography, costumes, lighting, and sound were over the top.
Just another night on the Harmony of the Seas...

  • The Entertainment Continues

    January 16, 2018 on the U.S. Virgin Islands ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Over the last few days the entertainment has been nonstop. We had a top tier loyalty event in the Aqua Theater with the Captain, champagne and a private show.
We frequently have enjoyed the Jazz Club with its quartet and singer.
The 90 minute Grease performance was like a Broadway production (or even better).
We were also entertained by a Las Vegas vocalist, Tony Tillman who was backed by the full Harmony orchestra. He was non stop energy covering all types of music while getting the crowd involved.

  • It keeps on coming....

    January 17, 2018 in Puerto Rico ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We were treated to another Broadway stage production by the cast of Grease. Columbus, The Musical! Again, the music, sound and costumes were of a caliber not found on many ships.

  • Haiti (sort of)

    January 18, 2018 in Haiti ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We docked at Royal Caribbean’s Private Destination in Labadee, Haiti. We watched in amazement how they disembarked 6700 passengers and tons of provisions quickly.
Royal Caribbean has a 99 year lease with the government of Haiti and maintains all of the facilities for their cruise ships. It consists of gorgeous beaches, zip lines, jet skis, parasailing and of course food and drink.
We did an historic walking tour with a native Haitian around the entire complex. He pointed out various sights and explained the history of his country.

  • Most Amazing Show EVER!!!!!

    January 18, 2018, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Cirque du Soleil, Gymnastics, Dance, and Diving. All of this was done at the highest point of the ship in an amazing outdoor Aquatic Show. We did not know where to look first. It had been canceled 4 times due to wind and now we know why.
So worth the wait. Without doubt we have never seen a more UNIQUE and EXCITING performance!!

  • Coastal Kitchen Restaurant

    January 19, 2018, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Coastal Kitchen is the exclusive suite restaurant on Harmony of the Seas. The food and service was excellent and on par with Silversea, Regent and Crystal. The maitre d’ gave us a view table each night with the same waiter. By the second night he knew our pre dinner drinks, wine and after dinner drinks without us telling him.Read more

  • Central Park

    January 19, 2018, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Central Park is one of the “neighborhoods” on the Harmony. You walk through an open outdoor area filled with 12,000 live plants and trees. There are winding paths and sitting areas going by restaurants and shops. It was a quiet and relaxing environment and hard to believe you were on a ship with 6700 people.Read more

  • Getting Off And Getting On

    January 20, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

There were some crowds disembarking from the Harmony but it was not as chaotic as we thought it might be. Our car service picked us up at the Ft Lauderdale Port and drove us to the Port of Miami.
When we arrived at our Regent ship we were surprised to see that the area was empty. We waited about one half hour to board in a comfortable lounge with snacks and drinks. As we boarded the Seven Seas Explorer we were greeted with champagne and then had lunch.
This was the first time we booked an aft suite. It is very comfortable and we really enjoy our deck and the views.

  • Key West

    January 21, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We toured Key West on the Conch Train. It is the southernmost point in the continental US.
We viewed new town which was built up in the 1950s, then crossed into old town with it’s historic homes and many, many bars.
After getting off the train, we had a guided tour of the Harry S. Truman Little White House. While many of the restored rooms were simple, it was quite interesting to hear about the events in them which spanned 175 days of his presidency. Sorry but no photos were allowed.

  • Regent Seven Seas Explorer

    January 21, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

This is the most beautiful ship we have ever been on. The elegant finishes and decor make you feel like you are in a six star luxury hotel.
Throughout the ship you are overwhelmed with crystal chandeliers, marble, carved wood paneling and crown molding. The furnishings come right out of Architectural Digest.Read more

  • Santo Tomas, Guatemala

    January 24, 2018 in Guatemala ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We rode an old trolley from the port through various neighborhoods into the town of Puerto Barrios. Our guide gave us the history and folklore of Guatemala.
Originally the big industry was the export of bananas but now its coffee with 85% of the production going to Starbucks.
The country is very poor with a lot of slums, yet the people were very friendly
This tour included free Guatemala beer that was in an “interesting” cooler. We passed.

  • Harvest Caye, Belize

    January 25, 2018 in Belize ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

We docked at Harvest Caye, a 75 acre private cruise ship destination with water sports and a shopping village.
We had a 50 minute catamaran ride to the “real Belize”. We then boarded school buses and drove through several villages along unpaved bumpy roads. We saw typical Mayan houses and learned about their history and way of life.
We viewed extreme poverty and wondered what the contribution was from the Harvest Caye resort to the infrastructure of the surrounding area.
We stopped at a small village market. The people were friendly and the children adorable.

  • Costa Maya, Mexico

    January 26, 2018 in Mexico ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

We drove 1 hour through the jungle to the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. Along the way our guide spoke to us about the Mayan people, both past and present.
These excavated ruins were discovered in the 1970s. The ruins of Chacchoben date back 1500 years.
We did an extensive tour of the site with our guide explaining how each structure fit in with Mayan society.

  • THE VERDICT!!!

    January 30, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

After almost 3 weeks on both ships here is the verdict:

Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas exceeded our expectations. Our Junior Suite was very large and tastefully decorated. You felt that you were at a resort, not on a ship. It was amazing how they managed 6700 passengers. The huge production shows and entertainment were unbelievable.

Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer is the most luxurious ship we have ever traveled on. Our aft suite was beautiful. The choice of restaurants and food were at the highest level. The entertainment for a ship of this size was terrific. Each night we had a variety of quality shows.

    So.....IT’S A DRAW!

We totally enjoyed each ship. Depending on ones priorities you should have a great time on whichever ship you choose.
