    Our plan today was to take the ship's shuttle bus into town and do a walking tour. Malaga has an average of 324 days of sunshine a year. Today it had light showers in the morning. The rain stopped and we went into town. It was an interesting mix of old and new. We viewed Moorish buildings and ancient streets and squares in the old town.Lue lisää

  • Cadiz, Spain

    Cadiz is a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides. There are alot of shipyards and today many cruise ships come here for repair or refurbishment.
    Cadiz claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western World, beginning in 1100 BC. The architecture has been shaped by its variety of cultures.
    We drove around the city for 1.5 hours, stopping at key sights and viewing beaches.
    We then went to La Cava (an old tavern) for sangria, tapas and a private Flamenco show. The singers and dancers were excellent. Our day in Cadiz was great.

  • Portimao, Portugal

    Portimao is a major fishing port, and an investment has been made in making it an attractive cruise port as well.
    Our relaxing tour began with a drive around the city on our way to Alvor. Alvor is a delightful little fishing village with a history that extends back to the Classical Era. We went on a walking tour through its charming streets and had free time on our own.
    Our next stop was the Quinta Dos Vales winery. First we had a walking tour of the property, its unique sculpture garden and vineyards. Then the winery manager conducted a tour of the winery. We have been on many of these but still were able to learn a lot from this most knowledgeable man. Finally we were led into the private Tasting Room of the Manor House for a tasting of their award winning red, white, rose, and port type wines accompanied by delicious Portuguese specialties. Both the food and wines were excellent.

  • Lisbon, Portugal

    Our two days in Lisbon were easy since we have been here before. On day 1 we relaxed, caught up and used the jogging track.
    Today we took the ship’s shuttle into town. We started in Rossio Square which has been the heart of Lisbon since medieval times. Walking the black and white mosaic cobblestone sidewalks we saw many squares with large fountains, monuments, cafes and shops.Lue lisää

  • Leixoes, Porto, Portugal

    Oporto, has an expansive beach, many parks, and a long promenade next to the water.
    In the city we viewed a medieval Cathedral and buildings with its famous blue tiles.
    Th city was preparing for the Red Bull Air Race on the Douro River. We were able to view several planes practicing. They were doing stunts and flying between markers on the water.
    Next was a tour of the port wine producer Pocas, which was established in 1918. We learned about the different stages of production as we walked beside huge oak casks and barrels. At the end of the tour we went into a cellar room for tasting.

  • La Coruna, Spain

    We had a fantastic 4 hour walking tour through the Old City, visiting its gardens, monuments, squares, and the city market.
    We stopped at a cafe for the thickest (almost like a pudding), most delicious hot chocolate and churros.
    Our tour ended at a wine bar where we had tapas and wine tasting. It was good that we had a 4 mile walk 😀.

  • Gijon, Spain

    Our tour began by driving to the old town of Aviles. We walked the historic quarter, viewing its architecture and courtyards.
    We then drove back to Gijon and were supposed to walk the through the town. Unfortunately they were having a huge festival. There was massive traffic jams with the promenade and streets packed. Everyone on the bus voted to return to the ship.Lue lisää

    Today we toured the Basque Coast and visited historic villages. Bermeo, a fishing village, has houses painted bright colors because the area is gray and gets a lot of rain.
    The town of Guernica, founded in 1366 was bombed by Germany in 1937 and inspired Picasso's painting Guernica. We also visited the elegantly appointed Assembly House.
    We ended the tour with tapas and wine.

  • Bordeaux, France

    We are in Bordeaux for two days and wanted to visit as many appellations as possible. We booked 4 tours with very tight connect times.
    Our first tour was a visit to the Medoc area. We were excited to drive on the famous D2 wine road stopping at grand Chateaux. We had a guided tour of the vineyards and wine cellar at Chateau Siran. Our tasting of several great wines was accompanied by cheese and bread.
    In the evening we went to the Classified Wine Chateau Haut Bailly located in the Pessac-Leognan appellation. After touring the vineyards and winery we had an elegant dinner in the Chateau with fantastic wines and food.

  • Bordeaux, France (Day 2)

    We began our second day by touring Bordeaux’s Old Town and visiting some of its oldest vineyards. We had an excellent tour of the Chateau Bouscaut given by its charming owner. We then went into the tasting room where we sampled several great wines.
    In the afternoon we toured the vineyards of St. Emilion and Pomerol regions. The village of St. Emilion a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 13th century walls was our next stop. This medieval town was very interesting and different from others we have seen.
    Our tour ended at the Chateau Du Tailhas Pomerol where we had another cellar tour and wine tasting.
    Our 2 days in Bordeaux were fantastic.

  • Saint Malo, France

    We drove to the Bay of Mont Saint Michel and began with a restaurant stop for a gouter (pastry around chocolate) and apple cider.
    Mont Saint Michel is one of the most famous monuments in France. It was built on a rocky island and founded in the 10th century.
    The day ended with a visit to the small fishing village of Cancale, known for its oyster beds.

  • Southampton, United Kingdom

    Our private tour included visiting the important historical sights of Southampton with its many memorials. We went to the SeaCity Museum’s Titanic exhibit.
    We then drove out to the New Forest, an open area of 220 miles where wild horses, cows, and donkeys roam free. These animals came right next to our car. The residents here are called commoners and live in beautiful thatched roof houses that are very far apart.
    The visit to this most unique area was enhanced by our guide who was an expert on life in the New Forest.

    When we booked our multi-segment voyage, we had to get special permission for this “one day cruise” that never left Southampton. Regular passengers disembarked. Media, travel agents and special guests embarked. It was the first time that the Silver Muse docked in Southampton. It was also the birthday of the owner who brought aboard his friends for the night. Us and 33 other in transit passengers were invited to the festivities.
    Rose set a trend at the bar with her French Martini.

  • Falmouth, United Kingdom

    We drove about 1.5 hours through Cornwall to the southern most point of the peninsula at Land’s End. The trip took us through the countryside of small villages, pastures, fields, and granite stone houses. We passed St. Michael’s Mount, the daughter Benedictine house of Mont St. Michel in Normandy.
    Luckily we had our cream tea with scones first, since we arrived in a cold, rainy, windy downpour. Soon the skies cleared and we walked the rocky Cornish coast.

  • Waterford, Ireland

    Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city. After a panoramic drive around the city we arrived at the House of Waterford for a guided tour. Waterford is no longer produced in Ireland with major facilities now located in Prague under the same strict guidelines.
    Our tour gave us an up close view into every step of the production process with actual craftsmen demonstrating. Afterward we went into their retail store which houses the largest collection of Waterford Crystal in the world.

  • Cork, Ireland

    We traveled to Cork City which used to be Europes main seaport.
    The highlight today was a guided tour of the Old Middleton Jameson Irish Whiskey Distillery which is still in use today. This excellent, detailed visit included three original pot stills. One of these copper stills is the largest in the world holding 31,000 gallons.
    We ended the tour in the tasting room where we sampled their Irish Whiskey.

  • Galway, Ireland

    Todays tour was Galway through the ages. We drove past a lot of pastures and pubs. We stopped at the 17th century Dunguaire Castle and visited Galway Cathedral. We have toured many Cathedrals on this trip and each one is unique and beautiful.
    We had a great visit at Rathbaun Farms with its interesting owner whose family has been raising sheep for 3 generations. We then went into the 150 year old farmhouse for delicious homemade scones.

  • Late Night Drinks

    At night we did an after dinner drink tasting with one of our favorite bartenders. As we are crossing the Atlantic Ocean it was quite bumpy. This bar is in the front of the ship so it was totally empty except for us. Interestingly our favorite drink was called The Stabilizer🥃.Lue lisää

  • St John's, Newfoundland

    Today we toured St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, whose harbor was the center of cod fishing and trading. We drove to Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America, with magnificent views of the city and coastline.
    Along the way we stopped at Petty Harbor, one of the oldest fishing harbors in North America.
    Signal Hill was our next stop and is referred to as “The Lookout”. It was also where Marconi received the first wireless transatlantic signal in 1901.
    Now we have been on the most westerly point in Europe and the most easterly point in North America.
